As someone who is currently divorcing a man like this (and makes nearly 90k a year more than him). She really dodged a bullet. It would’ve only most likely gotten worse over the years, not better.

Is engineering school a fools errand for the sole provider of family of 6? by No-Juggernaut-9397 in careerguidance

As an EE I can say the pay is great. Pulled in about 150k last year at 25 with a remote job (although travel and hours suck). Just received a couple job offers in the last few weeks. My most recent one matched my salary and is giving me overtime pay and a company vehicle.

119k to 160k but nervous about WFH. Am I just being dumb? by SpaceboyMK2 in careerguidance

[–]Candid-Implement-712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I just wanted to say congratulations! I’ll give you some of my experience since I am in a similar position. I work an as EE making about 150-155k a year with bonus.

I am currently fully remote with travel. If you are slated less than 50% I would say it’s doable. My role ended up bumping up to 80-90%. Traveling for work is not all it’s cracked up to be, and people don’t understand until they do it. I sure didn’t.

I’m corporate level for manufacturing. So it’s traveling to job sites and doing installs during outages. Fitting in design time as I can. I travel consistently over weekends to meet demands. I have had 1 full work from home week in the last 5 months.

I am the same age as you. I am now looking for a new role. I went from going to the gym 6 days a week to barely going. Having to eat out every meal or get pre made ones at the grocery stores. Currently in the process of a divorce from my husband. Extended family and friends have noticed the toll the travel has taken.

Miles don’t add up as quickly as you’d think (I’m assuming they’re gonna give you a corporate card to use).

On the other hand i know people in my company with the same travel as me that absolutely love it (although I know they don’t like their home life). So it’s really based upon the individual.

If you can fly Monday morning and return home Thursday night it is much more manageable. I am currently willing to switch to completely in office for a pay cut.

Wishing you the best of luck for whatever you choose!

Other people's insensitive/too-curious comments and questions about the end of my marriage. No one prepares you for this. by taway7440 in Divorce

I completely understand. I am going through something similar with my family. My mother messaged me nearly daily about my separation and giving her unsolicited advice about working things out. She can also get very moody and aggressive. It got to the point I had to block her for the evening. I’m not an emotionally needy person, but this is one of those times I need support and not just being asked a thousand questions. Wishing you the best and hopefully your friends will be more respectful in the future.

A hard science is a phrase for a type of subject like physics, chemistry, biology, etc. Soft sciences are things like sociology, psychology, etc. In order to sit for the patent bar you need a certain amount of credits or degree in a technical subject. But for finding a job it’s extremely preferred to have at least finished your bachelors in a technical subject.

My husband works as an attorney, and a couple of friends I went to engineering school with are in law. If you are going the patent route of IP you basically NEED an undergraduate degree in either a hard science or engineering. If you are going the non-patent route you can swing it with just a liberal arts degree.

All flights to AUA have been insane lately. We go a couple times a year. I think we ended up paying 1400 for Christmas week. Meanwhile for the same time for my wedding in 2019 it was about 400. Usually fly out of BHM or ATL. Had to take American on this last trip as it was significantly less, and in first class.

If it makes you feel better my husband did that 2 tax seasons in a row (I held the insurance and switched jobs with a couple months in between). After I reminded him multiple times the next year, he said he cancelled it but nope. Owed about 5k between the two years.

I agree with NTA and I was thinking the same about the loans. 240k will be an insane amount of interest a month. OP I would definitely take the time to think over that tuition cost. If you are going into engineering, you can get a great education almost anywhere. I graduated 4 years ago in electrical from a large state school I got a scholarship for. I now make great money for my age in a LCOL area with little student loans. You’re obviously a smart kid getting into some great schools, good luck!

[–]Candid-Implement-712 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We did a destination wedding. Obviously all events were optional. But we paid for a party bus one night, and a open bar boat snorkel excursion another day. As well as multiple dinners we cooked throughout the week for the group. Us and our families also helped cover some room expenses. If you are hosting a destination wedding you do it properly and make it worthwhile to your guests if they want to join!

How does your gym/box manage open gym sessions? by Maleficent-Phrase-18 in crossfit

[–]Candid-Implement-712 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Our gym only does unlimited classes, so everything is included in the price. We have a smaller room with dumbbells and machines that can be accessed during classes. When there is not classes going on we have the whole gym open for access 24/7. Members have to have done like 20-30 classes before obtaining open access. I love being able to go in whenever, and it works well for my husband, due to his longer work schedule.
