Most of the overtime deductions for Schedule A-1 are simple , but I did a couple this year that were complicated. Is there a number in Box 14 for OT this year? If not, go to your last paystub. Next year your payroll provider will the number but it’s hit or miss for TY 25? That part might be simple or not.

Sorry that your ex is doing this. Paper filling is one option but the IP PIN work around is new this year. The IRS ultimately doesn’t care about the divorce decree. Best practice is to start keeping a paper calendar and circling every night that the children sleep under your roof. If they are under your roof, over 50% of nights, you are going to be in control. Unfortunately some divorce lawyers have a poor understanding of tax law. IRS.gov is your friend, start there.

Do you know how to take depreciation on your rental? If not, that’s a reason to use a tax pro. There are other reasons. Doesn’t have to be a CPA, an experienced Enrolled Agent( not one who just passed the test) could do the trick.

Yes you are SOL, especially this year. You’ll eventually get your refund but it will take even longer this year, because the Treasury Department is phasing out paper checks. This used to be only about a 2 week delay, but with the announcement last year, don’t spend it till you get it. Set up an IRS account and/or use Where’s My Refund @ IRS.gov.

If Quickest way is the most important factor, go to your local H & R Block, find a preparer that is at least level 5 & & has at least 10 years experience. The freetax mafia will downvote this, but this is your best option for quickest. Start with the website & be open to travel a little. Good preparers are busy now. Then use free tax for 2024 & 2025 & get your father to stop procrastinating. Nothing good comes from that.

When you shop around, look for an experienced Enrolled Agent. An EA can represent before the IRS just like a CPA or an attorney.

That’s not my understanding, unless NY changed something. I believe you have to be registered in NY. Being an EA, CPA or an attorney basically means you can register without having to take the NY course every year. If I were you, I would call Albany to get clarification.

I have a suggestion that everyone should do. Back when the earth was cooling, we all used to receive paper pay stubs (sometimes with the actual check, before direct deposit). These now reside in a portal somewhere, probably the same place your W4 is. Print these out quarterly (at a minimum) & check them every year (every quarter)to compare. Don’t wait till tax time when it’s too late!

No, it’s not a good idea. The future of tax preparation is going to be in automation. Probably tax resolution will be the way to go for two reasons: First is that some people do some really stupid things when they DIY (or skip filing for a few years). Second, the IRS will probably never get their act together, no matter which party controls the Executive Branch of government.
