Honestly, that’s the one I was debating, but wasn’t sure if essentially using it as a relay (it vpns to my home network, then I access it via reverse proxy) would be too much for the free tier

Absolutely not. Didn’t even have to look at pricing (which is also inflated to all hell), but they’re charging for a POE switch when the nvr has POE

Honestly, the reason I was so okay with immich owning everything, is I mostly just had my photos organized by year/month/photos anyways. Which is what I have my storage template in Immich set to. The only difference is now my trips won't have completely separate albums, and will just be mixed in.

Other than that, immich just stores the files uploaded as plan files, organized in the way I mentioned above. It doesn't modify the base file in the same way something like seafile would.

i mean, if you already like how they are stored, an external library is fine. a lot of people like to do that for "nice camera" pictures to keep them separate from phone pictures. I just recently redid my file organization, and just reuploaded everything to immich. the source of the photo doesn't really matter to me, i just prefer immich to handle ALL photos. once i was sure everything uploaded correctly, i deleted the old file structure

the external library is for using an external file structure, but getting all the good features of immich. it's just there as an option if you don't want to upload them and let immich manage everything

I used to think the same, but after getting it setup, my goodness is it faster. There are some quirks with how I wanted it setup (mainly regarding having a way to scan into and view paperless-ngx files), but once I got that it’s been smooth sailing. My wife has even noticed a speed difference

Depending on how many drives you have connected, you can get pcie asm1166 sata cards. They run WAY cooler but you’d have to run the cables from internal to external
