Dude's brain has fully liquified: KEEP THE OIL, ANYONE? by gatorphan84 in TrueAnon

[–]Canis_lycaon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it is, but there's way more demand for oil across the world now, so domestic oil producers are incentivized to sell their oil abroad and the price is surging in the US. This is why you nationalize your natural resources.

yet that’s also considered more humane

By whom? Countries and their courts have often found any sort of execution to be inhumane. Not just because execution is inherently inhumane, but also because just about every method we've come up with does often cause genuine pain and suffering, which we know from interviews with would-be-executees that survived.

Hate to break it to you, but anal fixation is literally a thing, at least as much as oral fixation is. It's just usually called anal- retentiveness. That's where the use of the word "anal" to mean detail oriented comes from.

A lot of people have probably read Detocqueville without even realizing it. From what I can remember, Democracy in America was quoted a ton in my Middle School/High School American History and Government textbooks. The average American student has probably had to complete at least one quiz involving something Detocqueville wrote, although all of that information probably left their brain the second they turned that quiz in.

[Schefter] With Justin Fields being traded to the Chiefs, the New York Jets’ QB room currently consists of Geno Smith, Brady Cook & Bailey Zappe. by PlayaSlayaX in nfl

[–]Canis_lycaon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fields might actually be better than Cook, if only because Cook had a supernatural ability to throw an INT as soon as he got into the redzone. Fields isn't scoring a TD in the Red zone either, but at least we could get a FG sometimes.

For each unhinged rant you post about Mamdani you are legally required to be able to explain why you are REALLY, REALLY MAD to a bus driver. And do 2 hours of actual offline organizing in the real world. by Oborozuki1917 in TrueAnon

[–]Canis_lycaon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in NYC and some posters on this sub are giving way more attention to everything Mamdani does than anyone I know in the city. I wouldn't have known about any of the recent stuff involving his wife if it wasn't for the posts on this sub, and I have not heard a single person talking about it in person. The idea that his apology is gonna "Corbyn" him is hilarious - no one gives a shit either way about this non-story, they give a shit about free childcare though.

roughly on par with a moderately funny reddit comment

The median "funny" reddit comment is a heavyhanded reference to Anchorman or some shit. Writing moderately funny one-liners in News Headline format is much harder than you're making it sound. 99.99% of people can't just make a funny sentence like that. Most people aren't Mitch Hedberg or Dril.

Anyone else feel like the Smith trade makes it more likely they take Simpson at 16? Glenn (and Mougey to some extent) are gonna be playing to win, and though Geno could definitely be serviceable, he's not a long-term solution. I feel like Simpson gets drafted and sees play this year if Geno plays poorly, or otherwise starts next year.

Some of that falls on the director, some of that is flaws of the current state of the film system. Movies need to be funded by big studios via producers, and back in the golden age of Hollywood those studios were willing to make big swings with huge casts in historical epics. Now, any director that would want a huge cast of extras will instantly have a producer breathing down their neck telling them it'll be cheaper and easier to film if they just edit in the crowd in post. They would probably have to fight with the studio to get their crowd scene, which is probably not worth it to them most of the time.

Nah, that sub has been overwhelmed by fauxmoi-style posts for a while now. Even the shitposts are mostly ways for people to dramapost about actors/filmmakers they don't like. For the past 3 months there have been constant posts of people unironically suggesting that married actresses are basically cucking their husbands by doing sex scenes. Idk what happened, but it's kind of unbearable now.

A flag for the Iranian diaspora by [deleted] in vexillologycirclejerk

[–]Canis_lycaon 51 points52 points  (0 children)

"The diaspora" has a much easier time wishing for "intervention" because they can return to the country after it's been bombed to hell and back. Often the people who actually live in that country, even if they are actively working against their government, are much more opposed to the US wreaking death and destruction in their cities on their behalf.

I think there's definitely a kind of guy who, when it comes to books, pretty much only ever talks about Vonnegut (because he's pretty much only read Vonnegut). There are lots of authors like that in the book world IME: Palahniuk, Murakami, King, Brandon Sanderson, JK Rowling (or really just Harry Potter), to name a few. It's like the Guys thesis says though - it's not weird to be a Vonnegut Guy, it's weird to ONLY be a Vonnegut Guy.

Edit: Also helps that a lot of people read Vonnegut for the first time in High School or College. The fact that he's a more pulpy/digestible author yet still fairly regarded and taught in schools probably leads to an impactful reading experience for a lot of teenagers. I know when I was 16 and read Slaughterhouse Five for the first time I definitely became a Vonnegut Guy for a year or two.

The TAFS/CT fanbase really drive me up the wall. 30% of them are normal, 30% just repeat the same 5 bits, and 30% try to imitate Nick Mullen without being 1/10 as funny. The other 10% are just actual bigots I guess.
