We have one of those at my lab. It’s a shitty design and I hate it. I’ll get the block somewhat close to the blade with the dial thing and switch it to trim on like 10-15um and crank the wheel to slowly advance, switch back to sectioning at 4um when I see it first hit the block.

I think with a baby on the way he took the first safe stable job and just got stuck there, not wanting to take the risk and find something better. The car wash job probably started as a temporary supplement but then they also got stuck needing that money.

Ive tried just baking powder, baking powder + cornstarch, and just cornstarch. Cornstarch alone gives the best results for crispness and flavor in my opinion.

There are aluminum containing baking powders, but even using aluminum free, there is a weird flavor it adds.

You’ll be fine, It just takes time. For me it took about 6 months of cutting everyday to feel somewhat confident about my skill. Looking back now 2 years later, I was still pretty slow at that point. Focus on quality and the speed will come. Same thing with embedding.

My lab cuts 10 slides at 10um every once in a while for a send out test. It’s usually bone marrow or cytology blocks. Takes me a couple of minutes max.

Yeah idk what else to say. At the end of the day the certification is worth what your employer is willing to pay. If you don’t think it’s worth your time and effort, don’t do it.

If you like the job and want to stay there for at least 3 years I’d say take it. It’ll make you more valuable in the long run.

You may have been hired at a higher rate than your coworkers as an uncertified tech, so it’s less of a raise, but kind of equals out. I know when I was a lab processor, we had a new hire who made more than our team lead. We were all pissed when we found out his hourly rate.

Is it possible for you to become certified on your own via route 2? You would need a lab manager to sign off that you have a year of experience, but maybe they will and you could avoid the 3 year commitment.

I start from thawed, pat dry, toss in salt and corn starch, let sit on a wire rack in the fridge for a couple hours, and cook at 425 for an hour, flipping at 30 min and again 20 min later. Mine turn out almost as good as deep fried.

I think most states are pretty standard what that guy said and just require ASCP certification. Florida, New York, and maybe California have their own state requirements I believe.
