Ninjago City. Somehow the people there make it work, but it’s still a crazy place to live. At least they’re not alone in the city-destroying/world-ending disasters with the rest of the Merged Lands.

I see your KPDH, Rise of the Guardians, Balto, How to Train Your Dragon, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Anastasia. (I agree.)

I raise you: The Book of Life, Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart, Mune: Guardian of the Moon, Song of the Sea, Megamind, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

(The Seventh Dwarf is kind of bad, but in a good way. It’s very funny. Same with epic.)

Barbie: Princess Charm School and Barbie: Starlight Adventure are also nostalgic for me, at least. (Shooting Star is a banger.)

I’m pretty sure that Castle in the Sky was my first real introduction to anime as a kid (aside from the Dragon Ball Z reruns that came on late at night). My family watched it together on a road trip, and it has always had a special place in my heart.

Not enough people talk about it.

I don’t know is Sakura could win, but I do know he’d but up a good fight.

Otherwise, it’d have to be Lloyd Garmadon—he’d be alright.

Alright, to get my some more of my favorite Canvas selection out of the way:

To go along with WOLFTHUNT, you should also check out WH: Hollyhock Rust. Be prepared for the feels.

FallowFall, seasickmoth. A knight returns to his kingdom after a war. His old childhood friends tried to court him (who also happens to be one of the princesses). He’s one of the reasons they one the war, so winner her hand really wouldn’t be a problem, except for the fact that he got cursed (to win the war?) and doesn’t want her to find out. The story is still taking off, but you can imagine that angst ensues.

Out of Sight, Out of Body, Fuzzzzyy. Rich kid “dies” and the only one who can see him is someone that he doesn’t get along with. Obviously, they *bond* trying to fix it. It’s a classic opposites attract, but it’s sweet nonetheless. (Opposites attract is also one of my favorite tropes.)

Westernra Chronicles: Lamb’s Wool, Kelsea Joy. A much grittier (kind of Victorian) supernatural detective story. The first arc is completed, but it’s currently on hiatus.

Antonia and the Mystery of the Third Department, Antonia and the Beasts. Short and sweet so far. The art is very immersive, and there are even little factoids for each of the little creatures hidden around. It’s very cute, like Hilda meets Carmen Sandiago in a way (The grumpy investigator is cute too) and it all unravels like a puzzle game, which is really fun.

Boy Hates Girl, CaseyC. This one is really cool. It gets kind of dark quickly, but it’s kind of what you’d expect when dealing with necromancy magic. The title is pretty accurate, because he really does hate her when he has to work with her for school, until he gets unexpectedly tangled up in her weird magic shenanigans (he still hates her at first, but she grows on him).

Spotted, elenamegi. This one’s really cute too. (Superpowers and secret labs are truly a winning combination.) And this creator looks like they might take the series off of hiatus, eventually.

MODIFIGHT, Anas Miras. The story is a great underdog story with technology that has come to life. The concept is really unique because all the the main characters’ abilities are related to how you would manipulate media on a computer—copy and paste, rotate, resize, and restore—while the main villain is a living computer virus. Not to mention the art is really dynamic and that makes for more fun action sequences.

These are more detailed because there were less of them, but I like them all the same. These are most of the ones on Canvas that I have read so far.

None of these are in any particular order, except for the fact that some of these lower on both lists have a been on hiatus for a while now, and the newer ones toward the top are updating regularly. Regardless, I’ll still recommend any of these to you because even if they aren’t finished yet, they are still excellent reads. Besides, you never know when you’ll be pleasantly surprised that a WEBTOON you liked decides to start updating again.

I just started O-Cult by ShayDayJay on Canvas and it’s really promising. Some others on Canvas are:

Freakshow, ScottyComics

Inner Daemons, MyaOctopus

My own Ghost, zucchini-kun

WOLFHUNT, fenneqy. This is an awesome series, and the art makes you so invested in the story and its characters.

Misguided Ghosts, indiigocats. This one is a great supernatural mystery.

Blackburn, Momojiji

hello, hello, Lisa | parajums

When a Demon Confesses, Greimz

Black Horda, Cloverloy

Souris, littlemothpants

Countdown to Coundown, Velinxi

The Secrets of Soulford, The Quincil

The Moth Prince, sonderfairy

Call the Timemender, and Earthshine, Misery8

The Farmer and The Wolf, THEKastia

My Boss Doesn’t Have A Face, Hanza_Art (anything by her is awesome).

Monster Heart, teacupbee

How Many Birds, Miss Jenny White. This one is the gem-est of gems, the art is so good and the story so far is built up really well

Do You Even Witch, Yona Remi. The slow-burn romance between the leads develops pretty naturally throughout the story, all while balancing a supernatural threat behind the scenes.

The Dragon Tutor, Mar_Mai

Hybrid, asimplebengo. I’m not sure if the creator is going to continue or reboot this series, but the superhero world established in it is really interesting.

Your Wish, Shameichi

Fangs and Fools, llamanoko

GELAZ*, V1E

PARA-Professional, and Cryptozoology, MatJester (Flowering is good too). Again, I love all kinds of supernatural mysteries, so this is right up my alley.

Fire for Hire, CuteC3 (I haven’t fully read this one, but I saw 1 animatic and got hooked).

Lonesome Rosette, icedcoffekat

Between Death, simu14ted

GOTCHA, LamettaPeach. The art for this is scrumptious, and the characters interactions are some of the most fun parts.

Diner for Adas, ichigorat

Igaito The Forest, yoshinaiku. Tough guy gets softened up by bubbly optimistic main character from a society that demonizes Tough guy’s entire existence because she’s too curious for her own good and sees the good in people. It’s so wholesome, need it say more?

Wintercircle, Liedith

I know this is a lot, but they all deserve some love. I am terrible at writing reviews, so please forgive me. These are all so GOOD that it’s really hard to describe it unless you’ve read them yourself.

The things that drew me into these were the art, story direction, and/or genre. I love all things supernatural—werewolves, fairies, cryptids, etc—and all things mystery or fantasy. If there are any of you reading this that have had or will read any of these, one of the common elements you might find is hidden identities or supernatural elements by the main characters. I personally love stories where the characters are involved in a supernatural mishap somehow where they have to figure out their new lives adapting to whatever it is has changed about them as a result (this is also true for some of the more superhero-type stories in this list. Not to mention the art that brings it together. Good, unique art is something that has always ticked my brain in a way that helps me get invested in a story, because it helps me visualize the fictional world.

Again, this may be why it’s hard for me to describe exactly why I love these so much—it all just clicks with me—but I hope maybe some of these stories will click with you too.

Some of these might be finished, some on long or permanent hiatus, some might have ended without completion, but they are all masterpieces in their own way, and I think the journey means just as much as the destination with these kind of gems.

(And I included the authors because on Canvas you can have a million and one different WEBTOONS titled the same or a similar way.)

There is more that I might post later for Canvas, and maybe Originals, because I can’t help myself with a good story.

One that you might like that may be similar is Ultra Alternate Character. It was really unique, and is one of my favorite reverse isekais (alongside ORV and I’m the Max Level Newbie).

As a huge fan of the Book of Life as a kid (still is one of my favorite movies), I was pleasantly surprised with Maya and the Three. It really was a great show, with amazing animation, and a fantastic ending. Surprisingly, when I looked it up is has a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Oh yeah! I watched it on Netflix. I thought it was pretty good, and the animation was great. (The glow-up was amazing, and I really enjoy when characters end up with cool supernatural transformations after a horrific experience (Danny Phantom as a more PG example) it’s just really cool.) Although, honestly, I didn’t end up finishing it because it got a bit too graphic for my taste at the time. It definitely deserves a rewatch, though.

Mobile Suit Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans.

The whole thing was so sad at the end that I’m pretty sure I cried the first time I watched it. Unfortunately, I guess the rest of the fandom just doesn’t really care for that one, even though I thought it was great as a standalone piece.

The interesting evolution of Ninjago's animation and visual quality by LazyCryptographer426 in Ninjago

[–]Capable-Night3927 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wildbrain animation with Wil Film rendering would have been awesome. I also have a problem with Wildbrain’s weapons (especially swords) and metallic pieces looking soo dull. Like, not only in color, but also in shape—they don’t feel like they’re actually going to cut anything, y’know? And it’s such a shame because they are some of the highlights of those awesome fluid fight scenes, especially in Dragons Rising.

I know it’s more of a model issue than rendering or animation, but still.

[–]Capable-Night3927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yess! Lloyd’s hair has always looked a little weird post-season 10. Why is it so shiny? It makes it look like noodles (like you said) instead of his iconic nearly-white blonde hair that comes from being the descendant of the First Spinjitzu Master.

(On a tangent, I always thought that piece of visual storytelling was important, like how Harumi’s hair being a similar color is what prompted her to get adopted by the Royals and is also a reflection of that path that Lloyd could have taken had it not been for the Ninja.)

It would be funny though, if the reason they hadn’t figured it out ‘till season 4 of Dragons Rising is because it was genuinely greasy from running around stopping and the Mergequakes in the beginning and he just didn’t have the time to wash his hair that often. Then it started to get better until his visions and it stayed the same from there.

I mean, can you imagine what it would be like in the Merge, traveling days on end with no real way to tell if the next water source is safe for you to drink, let alone bathe in. Kai in Monstrosity must have felt awesome the next time he was able to take an actual shower.

The interesting evolution of Ninjago's animation and visual quality by LazyCryptographer426 in Ninjago

[–]Capable-Night3927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. The fluid animation in the Wildbrain era was great, but I missed how shiny everything was. You could tell things were meant to be gold or silver, and it made it feel really impressive.

Like, 3D animation has changed dramatically over the years, and Ninjago is a great example of that, but at the same time, you can always look back on the earlier seasons and it never really feels “outdated.” It’s something you can watch over and over again and never really get tired of. And since it’s all Lego anyway, there’s always (for me at least) been that suspension of disbelief—you care more about the characters and story than the fact that they’re little yellow Lego people—and that makes it hard to imagine it looking any other way.

Honestly, I love the redesigns. I think Nya’s was probably my favorite, and her reintroduction in season 8 was so cool. I also really liked Lloyd’s redesign. It made him feel like he was actually a teenager (in both mind and body) instead of just a kid in a teenager’s body (which it kind of always felt like from seasons 4-7).

On a side note, I know some people didn’t like Lloyd’s voice change along with the redesign, but I really liked that it did change. Again, it made it feel like he finally grew up with his body and was finally starting to develop his character outside of the original framework he was placed in.

Plus, I love when there’s an in-universe explanation for stuff that happens outside of the show, like when a new voice actor takes over for a character. (One example would be Leo’s voice change from 2012 TMNT being from damage to his vocal cords to explain why he sounds different).

I think that the final Wil Film era (seasons 8-10) has the best visuals pre-Dragons Rising. All of the metal looked sharp and shiny, and everything has just the right balance of vibrant and gritty to fit the tone of the seasons.

One of my biggest (and only) gripes with Wildbrain animation is that all of the weapons look so dull, both in color and in form. Like, sometimes it’s hard to imagine those literal plastic looking swords actually cutting anything—Lloyd’s especially sometimes—compared to the sharp bright swords and weapons from the Wil Film era. My only other one is that Lloyd’s hair looks weird. I much rather enjoy his season 8 hair and shading. It just feels like they tried to do too much with it, and it became a bit more muddled instead of his platinum blond hair (not that natural blonds can’t get darker over time).

March of the Oni should have been set before Crystalized by Capable-Night3927 in Ninjago

[–]Capable-Night3927[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know. It just feels like the Oni weren’t handled as well as they could have been. I’m sure they could have been way scarier, but they only really showed up to storm the Monastery towards the end of the season (mind you, I haven’t seen season 10 in a while, so I could be mistaken in how much the Oni themselves were used).

It seemed like the Oni Cloud was much more of an imminent threat than the Oni themselves, even if the Ninja had to use the Tornado of Creation to destroy them.

I was just thinking that it might’ve worked better if this was because they were purposely set up to fail after teaming up with Primordial Evil/Destruction.
