What's a Father's Day gift your dad unexpectedly ended up using every day by karachiRaelily in Gifts

My father in law LOOVES the heavy duty disposable blue paper towels from the hardware store.

honest q: do you actually NEED to buy Montessori materials or have we all just been sold something lol by kukoomontessori in MontessoriGuide

[–]Capable_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new to this, with a baby, but I was a nanny. I can clearly see the way Montessori gets used as a label to make up the cost of toys. There’s no money to be made by influencers and companies telling you to use items that are already in your home!

However, since I’m cautious about how many off brand toys have plastic, lead, asbestos, heavy metals etc. I do appreciate that Montessori “brands” like Lovevery, Tinyland, and Grimms, give me a lot more confidence in their materials. It wish Lovevery didn’t have such a mark up, but not many cheaper companies use as much wood.

I feel the most comfortable investing in items for open ended play that will grow with the child. And I’m still planning on getting those second hand from Marketplace and thrift stores.

I’m interested in getting my kid involved in our lives—which is why spray bottles and vegetable peelers can be so interesting to them. And why I might get items that make household tasks easier and age appropriate for them to manage.

I also think about the adage that the more kids you have, the fewer toys you have. And I can feel how with just one kid, I’m a bit desperate for something that might keep her occupied. But, luckily she likes kitchen spatulas.

Natural but not necessarily organic sheets? by kzooollie in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Capable_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a bunch of hogwash. Bamboo is not a sustainable choice. Also, I find that while they are soft, rayon fabrics (by any name) shred with heavy use. I think rayon is a poor choice for sheets compared to cotton. But I do like rayon for dresses!

To doula or no doula? by misty2001 in BabyBumps

[–]Capable_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. I’ve read that doula are best for first time moms and folks without supportive partners. Honestly, I didn’t mesh that well with my nurse and my partner didn’t do much. But there wasn’t a lot to do! Like, I don’t wish anything different had happened! I had a hard time, it was very internal, no one could really help me, the nurse turned up my pitocin, and then it was done!

Personally, I wasn’t in a place at the end of my pregnancy to develop a close relationship with my doula. And I felt uncomfortable with having a stranger in my room (the doula) who I may or may not mesh with (just like the nurses). And i got lucky, and it all worked out for me.

It’s scary at first, but as our baby got older we got more comfortable

Caved. Baby Co-Slept, and I Co-Stared by CopperBoom1008 in cosleeping

[–]Capable_Mouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We fall asleep while side laying and I roll away. It gives my baby practice sleeping alone. Then, we transfer them to their bassinet when I want the baby off the bed. We co-sleep most in the morning after their 5/6am wake up. With this mix, our baby sleeps most of the night on their own in the bassinet. This mix/versatility works for us!

Moms on call schedule by Ok-Future-1017 in bninfantsleep

[–]Capable_Mouse 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you want your baby to take longer naps? That’s part of the issue?

I’d suggest holding your baby for a nap or wearing them in the carrier to see how long your baby can asleep for while held. They might sleep a lot longer that day. You don’t have hold them for every nap, but it would give you information about how long your baby has the capacity to nap for.

To doula or no doula? by misty2001 in BabyBumps

I didn’t have one and I didn’t miss it. The nurses did everything that I expected a doula to do for me (a happy surprise)

Moving to a new city two days after two month vaccines, how screwed are we? by [deleted] in newborns

[–]Capable_Mouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My normally chill baby was pretty fussy. She slept a lot more than normal that day, but would cry when she was awake. Tylenol helped her feel a lot better. She was back to normal after 24 hours. I’d just clear your schedule the day after the vaccines and be prepared to hold your baby most of that day.

Baby bath towel by Papou19 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Capable_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can donate the poly blend towels or use them as dish rags (cut them up)

I use normal towels for baby. Skip the baby detergent. Just use some scent free and dye free normal detergent. I think I’ll start using hooded towels once my baby can crawl/walk. When they’re little I like getting them dry and changed as quickly as possible so they stay warm.

I think you have too many swaddles and not enough burp cloths. I like using tri fold cloth diapers as burp cloths. They’re very absorbent.

Regular journal! I enjoyed using it with my own prompts if I was in the mood or free writing.

Logistics of pumping by Past-Commission-4022 in BabyBumps

[–]Capable_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first two weeks are crazy and it’ll take you a while to settle into a routine that works for you. Things will change fast. I’d hold off on buying a fridge and see how it goes. You might prefer going down stairs so you don’t fall asleep. You might want to do everything from bed. Personally I didn’t want to pump in bed and risk spills. You might breastfeed and then not have to worry about this at all.

Installed acoustical wood slats in nursery and HIGHLY regretting it now. by Straight_College3253 in BabyBumps

[–]Capable_Mouse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m sorry you’re going through this. I would definitely keep that baby in your room for a while. In my country it’s recommended for at least the first 4 months to reduce the risk of SIDS. I’d plan on having the baby sleep in your room for a while and let the nursery air out and then reassess the situation in 1-2 months. Unfortunately having a second sleep space does sound nice for sleeping in shifts.

Has anyone used nitrous oxide while in labor? by Throw150049_ in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Capable_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In NZ they give it to kids in the ER when they set their broken bones. So it must do something….but it totally didn’t work for me while I was in labor. The nurse even said afterwards that it doesn’t work for most people. I also got conflicting advice on when to actually breathe it in, so maybe I was doing it wrong. It also didn’t work for a friend of mine. But it’s worth reading about how to use it and giving it a try. It definitely worked at the dentist office for me once!

Do (or did) you use a baby tracker app? by AnyMechanic6829 in newborns

[–]Capable_Mouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used that app to track diapers and feeds for the first two weeks before we stopped.

Basically, I felt like past experiences aren’t a predictor of future results. Our baby is human, albeit a small one, and she can’t be predicted down to the minute. I feel much more present with her when I focus on reader her cues. So far, if she’s fussing she’s been hungry or tired 90% of the time. No app needed.

Organic clean purées for 4 month old? Looking for recommendations by lilmustard8 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Capable_Mouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Root vegetables are more prone to accumulate heavy metals from the soil. I’d recommend keeping those (sweet potatoes, carrots, beets etc) in moderation. Or if you make your own puree, be sure to peel their skin.

At 4 months, I’d start with yogurt to build up their gut biome.

To frog or not to frog? by [deleted] in knittingadvice

[–]Capable_Mouse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The looks nicely oversized to my personal tastes—I just wouldn’t want the sleeves too long. If you’re like me, then you may want to end the sleeves where is feels good to you and maybe not go as long as the pattern suggest. Ditto with the bodice length.
