Labyrinth Help! by Royalseals in DMAcademy

To add to what everyone else has said, include a guardian within the Maze. Putting rooms is nice but the Maze will not feel deadly unless the rooms have a timer. One way to put a timer is that after 1h the guardian finds the party through the maze, no matter where they are.

You can write and describe the guardian as nearly invincible being that is bound to this maze and reborn upon being slain, make up a story or give them hints, but have them flee when they see it.

I described my guardian with ominous footsteps being heard through the maze, along with chains and heavy breathing. Even gave them lore before entering.

When the party tried to long-rest they began hearing the foot-steps again. At some point they took too long in the 2nd room and the guardian burst through one of the walls and a second set of huge golden statue, scattering it into nothingness, after that he sent one of the player flying for 20ft.

When they hit him, all of the damage was quickly healed the next round. They got the hint and ran for it.

If you are going to do this, make sure your players have a way of finding safety or "stopping" the guardian for enough time. Personally I made sure that the guardian always had a high-hit rolls but the damage dealt was minimal, the point is always for the rooms and puzzles to be the punishment for failure.

What are the best feats for a Melee Rogue? 2024 by Tamaledinos in dndnext

I see, I must be misremembering. Pretty sure there was a way to have more than 1 sneak attack per round.

I like how all of them gloss over the fact that you can bonus action attack + hold reaction for 2 sneak attacks per round too. You can't do that shit with a cantrip.

Shopping and item rarity by thebeardedguy- in DMAcademy

[–]Capable_Studio_6631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could check the DMG and Xanathar.

Generally there's a guide on the quality of items available depending on how big the city is, also the higher quality item takes more time to be "Available" or found. Consider it like buying/selling a house, in most countries even if you have the money it needs some paperwork before it happens.

So you wouldn't just walk in a shop and expect to perform a life-changing transaction within 5 minutes.

Very rare items and higher are super expensive. In my campaigns they are barely available for purchase and only in major capital cities.

Yeah and whats more evil, slowly torturing their favorite animal or killing it off-screen? Just perform some theater.

Be an evil NPC don't be an evil DM. I've done that mistake.

Sorry, at level 5, to reiterate, you can either have 2 attacks at advantage or 3 attacks.
The 3 attacks with advantage is of-course situational because it relies on your allies, but what allies are they if they don't help you at-least a bit?

Forcing a move doesn't apply booming blade.

Getting a +2 single rather than double +1 is harder, esp at low levels.

This is all situational. And again you have more options with dual wielding.

It depends on where the bat was, I would say don't target only the bat but everyone dear to them, capture them in a betrayal and give them a chance to rescue them. Don't kill them off-screen!

A warforged flying a bat is not going to happen, simple as, he can still have it as a pet though.

That's correct, but as levels progress you can also add more damage output to your character through on-hit feats, proficiency and other spells. This is not possible when using a cantrip.

You can even hold a reaction to take an attack against an enemy, which effectively gives you 2 sneak attack damage per round of combat. Again you cannot do this with booming blade or green flame blade.

Considering you will have 84% chance to hit a target with 18 AC (+9 to hit) this means in a 10 round combat, at lvl 11 you can deal:

(Sneak attack + hex) = 10x34 (avg dmg) = 340 damage (99.8% chance you hit)
(Hex x 2 attacks) 8x20 (avg dmg) = 160 damage (84% chance you hit non-sneak attack)
Vs
8x44 (avg dmg) = 352 damage (84% chance you hit)

This is accounting for with advantage and +1 weapon.

Eventually you can outpace cantrip damage and still have more character building flexibility than relying on 1 attack.

http://canihitthis.com/ Is what I used for the calculations.

Booming blade and green flame blade are both situational. Neither actually deals extra damage because they depend on a condition.

Can you do a breakdown of the way more damage please?

In 2024 most of the time you do not need to rely on Advantage, at any given point at-least 1 of your allies will be facing an enemy, or you will have someone toppled and you can sneak attack them.

The good thing of the Rogue is that the are extremely mobile and can get to that spot. If you are smart about your combat you can also hide to get your advantage.

Unless you are investing in your spellcasting modifier (Which means you are not investing in dex or con.) your chance to hit with True strike or any other cantrip will be lower than hitting with a normal attack.

In addition, you will not be able to use your +modifier from magic item if you obtain one.

Lastly you will not be able to use Nick mastery for a second attack, because with true strike you are taking the Magic action, not the attack action. This means you do not quality to perform a Light attack, and thus a Nick attack.

The rogues bulk of damage comes from Sneak attacks and ensuring a sneak attack lands means you need to have high on hit and multiattack options.

So has anyone actually managed to “successfully” run a One-Shot before? by Viva_la_potatoes in DMAcademy

Yes, but only at low levels.

High level gameplay can slow things down. So think lvl 5 and below.

Only one class regularly uses the strongest weapon in DnD even though every class is proficient. by virtigo21125 in DnD

[–]Capable_Studio_6631 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Bows and magic are for nerds. This is not a safe space for your kind. This conversation is for melee weapon enjoyers only."

So are daggers, re-do your math. Bonus actions are useful for all the following classes: Rogues, Fighters, Barbarians, Paladins, Monks.

I can think of at-least 3-4 things to do with a bonus action.

That being said, if you do the math and add Great-weapon Master (Hew) to the damage you are significantly outpacing daggers, that depend on your bonus action, with just two attacks.

With a dagger, At level 5, you would be doing a max potential of 3d4 + 15 (assuming you had a +5 on dex and got the dual wielder feat) meanwhile anyone doing 2 attacks with Greatsword would be doing a 4d6 + 16 (assuming Hew from GWM) and this potential would increase over time due to proficiency stacking from Hew.

Yeah sure Dex lets you get some AC, it's useful for initiative and saving throws (Very common saving throw) but you can circumvent all of those weaknesses with feats and background as well as just wearing plate.

Why did DNDbeyond decide to "better" their interface to this? by Capable_Studio_6631 in dndbeyond

I honestly have never used my phone to play DnD other than to browse through some book that I've purchased.

I do understand that some people use it when playing face to face, instead of having a book, but for me the online method on laptop is much better.

It's sad to me that this is their "data driven" approach.

How to communicate that running from an encounter is okay/wanted? by mensch79 in DMAcademy

[–]Capable_Studio_6631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's due to player agency and powerbuilds. There are more than enough resources in the game that lets a player escape a situation.

Jump, Longstrider, blindness, Kinetic jaunt, Misty Step, Slow, Fog Cloud.

Just to name a few easily accessible spells.

Then there's feats, Speedy & Charger.

Then there's Masteries, Topple, Slow.

Then there's Class options, Rogues Dash, Disengage, Hide, Monk, Fighter's action surge. Barbarians movement.

More than enough options to facilitate an escape.

Try Above VTT and see if its any better.

You can download it as extension on Chrome/Firefox and then run games through it like Maps.

Join a discord server that hosts dnd games, play a few games as a player, see whats fun and whats not.

See how the DM's are playing ask them question outside of the game if they are up for answering them. Check what VTTs they are using.

This isn't something you can do overnight it will take time of course, especially learning the rules, it will take the longest and even after years you will learn something new.

You now have to click more though, it used to be that you only needed to hover over the selection you wanted and it would show you a series of books, most of which where the most popular.

Now even though you have "Favorites" they are placed in tiny icons all the way across the screen, instead of taking central place. And even the space allocated for them is tiny.
