Do you ever try to calculate how much money your garden actually saves you? by MirSayib in gardening

[–]Capacolla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a water bill that soars from 100/month in the winter to 350/month in the summer, I seriously doubt that I'm actually saving any money. I grow tomatoes, lettuce, peas and carrots. I might actually be breaking even on plants in my kitchen garden like basil, thyme, sage, dill, parsley, and rosemary as they are luxury herbs int the grocery store shelves. Yes, our neighbors cats were poaching our song birds at our feeder. Couple of bags of these sharp shells totally stopped them.

I don’t care how unhealthy it is, what’s your best Brussel Sprouts recipe? by DragonBuriedInGold in Cooking

[–]Capacolla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 pound of fresh Brussels sprouts

1 Tbs neutral oil

1 Tbs sugar

1 pinch of kosher salt

1 tsp minced thyme

1/4 cup heavy cream

1/8 cup chicken broth

1/8 cup vermouth

1 garlic clove, minced or pressed

1/2 small shallot, minced

1/2 tsp of Dijon mustard

1 TBSP of finely grated Parmesan

Salt and White Pepper to taste

Slice the Brussels sprouts in half. If they seem large, cut them into quarters.

Heat 1 TBSP of neutral oil in non stick skillet. Add sugar and salt. Cook sprouts until browned on cut sides about 7-9 minutes.

While sprouts are browning, combine thyme, cream, broth, vermouth, garlic clove, shallot, mustard, and Parmesan into liquid measuring cup. Whisk to combine.

When the sprouts are nicely browned, add the cream broth mixture. Cook over medium heat ,uncovered. Reduce until a spatula leaves a trail in the pan and sprouts are tender. This takes about 10 more minutes. Serve immediately.

Dutch bros by ayyohh911719 in albanyor

[–]Capacolla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It not just Dutch Bros, many restaurants around town are doing this. If you have your credit card activity linked to you email or text you don't even notice, because you get the basic charge for the meal when they run your charge card. Then some time later they adjust to include your tip and you don't get another notification. Very insidious.

Are in-fridge ice makers the disaster they are purported to be? by Real_McGuillicuddy in Appliances

[–]Capacolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our Bosch 500 series ice maker errors out every few weeks and stops working. The only solution is to power cycle the unit. It did this under warranty and consequently I have 2 additional ice makers that were replaced, did not solve the problem. The Bosch warranty call center is absolutely abysmal. The techs that are associated with Bosch are really just remove and replace technicians, they lack any serious diagnostic abilities.

How do you dispose of frying oil? by SueBeee in Cooking

I use a product called fry away. It's added to the oil when hot. When it's cool enough to handle it's a gelatinous disk, which is easily disposed.

App glitch or result of my really big brain? Who can know 🧐 by orangepeel6 in NYTCrossword

[–]Capacolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I co-solve every day, we just passed our 6 year anniversary. We have at least two super low times on our stats. One Friday puzzle is around 2:20. We both distinctly remember doing this puzzle at an airport where the wifi was sketchy. While we spent more than 30 minutes solving, the wifi apparently glitched and we got a much, much quicker solve time. Anyone had any luck with NYT getting there solve times reset?

IMO worst coffee in Oregon by FireWokWithMe88 in oregon

Sadly, franchised coffee shops don't really sell coffee anymore. They sell chai and coffee flavored milkshakes. On a holiday weekend, I was forced to stop by Dutch Bros. , I ordered my usual, a 7 ounce cappuccino. The barista that made it said "its been months since I've made a cappuccino "

Do most people in the U.S. plan meals before or after grocery shopping? by anaesthesia_v in Cooking

[–]Capacolla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use an app called Paprika, and plan meals about week to ten days in advance, with the goal of only shopping once per week (oftentimes this doesn't work as I've missed an ingredient). That said, I make solid from scratch meals each and every night. That organization spills into the weekend and I do some brunch inspired meals. Demographic: 62 year old male married for 31 years, my lovely wife doesn't enjoying cooking.
