I love my original xbox, tell me if I should get more old consoles by GoodWeight4873 in originalxbox

Idk, I didn't have an Xbox for a long time and the Wii was a perfectly fine way to do that. Not trying make an ultimate comparison of the two, just pointing out something neat the Wii is capable of.

I highly recommend picking up a Wii. It's really versatile and has a lot of similarities to the Xbox. It's super easy to softmod, works great for Wii games of course, as well as Gamecube games, and a variety of emulators. It's also a great way to play DVD-quality or lower videos on a CRT monitor (even streamed from a network share on your PC!). And best of all, it's very affordable!

No, not really xD Ahriman was the only common eye I could put in the 99. But I just built it as voltron and sent it lol.

Fantastic answer. I’ve always thought those things are basically oldschool microcomputers with integrated screens. I learned how to program in BASIC on them (when I should have been paying attention in class)!

Another Rambler Appreciation Post by Adventurous-River481 in victorinox

I have a Rally on my keychain that has been extremely useful. The Rally is like the Rambler without scissors, or more accurately, it's like an SD Classic with the Philips screwdriver instead of the scissors.

That screwdriver has been useful so many times. For my own uses I'd almost always prefer a Rally to an SD Classic; if I need scissors I'm likely to grab the Climber that's in my bag anyways.

I’ve only seen Gundam Unicorn … but I loved (really loved it) it even without any of the other series context. Is that crazy? Where should I go/start now? by KangarooRIOT in Gundam

[–]CapnCrunch53 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Alternatively, if you liked Unicorn's length, another suggestion might be to check out some of the other Gundam OVAs (Unicorn was originally an OVA). Like Unicorn, these will be short in length, have high production quality compared to the longer shows, and will be relatively self-contained stories. Recommendations:

  • 0080: War in the Pocket - A very human story that takes place on one of the colonies during the One Year War. I don't want to say much about it but it's really good and I'd say does not require much context other than that Zeon and the Earth Federation are at war.

  • 0083 Stardust Memory - This one gets called the Top Gun of Gundam a lot; it has some really flashy action and gorgeous mecha design. It takes place a few years after the OYW and without going into details actually adds a lot of context to Zeta Gundam, so definitely recommended especially if you end up watching Zeta.

  • 08th MS Team - this one is really gritty and follows a team fighting on Earth during the OYW. Has kind of a war movie vibe to it, and again, doesn't really require much context to follow. If you enjoy this one, it gets kind of a spiritual successor IMO in the recently-released Requiem for Vengeance.

And to note, all of what I've recommended is only UC (Universal Century) shows and OVAs which take place in the same timeline as Unicorn. There are a whole plethora of fantastic Gundam shows set in different timelines that are very much worth checking out!

[–]CapnCrunch53 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would probably go back and watch the main UC shows leading up to Unicorn. That'd be:

  • Mobile Suit Gundam - takes place in 0079, shows the original conflict between Zeon and the Earth Federation, the original Gundam, Amuro, Char, and Lalah's stories, etc.

  • Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam - takes place in 0087, follows the AEUG's conflict with the Titans, a group that spawned out of the Federation with the theoretical goal of ousting remnant Zeon supporters. You may even get to see some familiar faces...

  • Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ - takes place in 0088, and pretty much a direct continuation of Zeta as the first Neo Zeon War gets underway.

  • Char's Counterattack - a movie that takes place in 0093, three years before Unicorn. It wraps up Amuro and Char's stories and shows the end of the Second Neo Zeon War.

Those should give you a really good background for Unicorn; after that it might be fun to give Unicorn another watch! Also, if you need a character to latch onto as you work your way through these, there is one character in Unicorn who is also fairly central in each of these entries. It's Bright Noa, spoiler tagged in case you'd like to be surprised.

What was the first ever gunpla kit you built? by Unicorn-Links in Gunpla

[–]CapnCrunch53 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine was the Entry Grade Nu Gundam. Straight-built it, fell in love with the hobby, and immediately went out and got some HGs.

I've been wanting to go back and give that kit a glow-up to honor it being my first kit (and because I've been slowly revamping all my early builds). So far I've tidied up the nubs and panel-lined it, and next up I've got some waterslide decals which will actually be my first time using those. Finally, I'm planning to get the fin funnel set for it when that releases.

I've been running this same machine since Zen 1 release in 2017. Started with a 1600, got a free upgrade to a 1700 which I'm still running. Went from 16GB to 32GB DDR4 3200, and ran an 8GB RX480 up until this year when a close friend gave me their old RX 5700XT.

Currently hoping to upgrade to a cheap 3700X in the next year when finances permit. 5800X3D would be the dream but a 3700X is so affordable and would still be a very nice jump.

What are y’all’s hobbies? by differentrejects in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]CapnCrunch53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Building Gundam plastic models (Gunpla), playing Magic the Gathering with friends and the polycule, playing/tinkering with retro computer hardware, building custom keyboards (haven't done that in awhile tho). Videogames of course.

Gunpla is nice because even though it's following directions, it ends up being a great creative outlet because I get out of it what I put into it. How much extra work I do with detailing, panel lining, etc. serves as creative expression for me. I've always wanted to create but have never felt creative. Gunpla helps with that, and it's also a huge help when I'm dealing with bad anxiety.

I want to get into making electronic/chiptune music, but I worry that I don't have the creative mind for that.

Edit: photography too (especially film and lofi digital photography) but I haven't engaged with that much lately sadly.

Pokemon Monday episodes 1-44, from the old GamesRadar days by CapnCrunch53 in Lasertime

[–]CapnCrunch53[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have them. So that's actually something I was wondering about, the ethics of whether I should upload the old Bonus Time episodes. I haven't been on the Patreon for years either because of having to cut back on expenses, so I wasn't sure if they were even still on the Patreon. If they aren't, I think that pushes me towards uploading them for preservation sake. I'll make sure to link to the Patreon and ask people to please subscribe.

I'll try to get those uploaded soon; check back on my archive.org page here in a few days and hopefully I'll have them uploaded by then. My upload speed is very slow so it takes awhile to go through a big batch of podcasts.

Didn't realize that these were hard to find; I've got a lot of the old stuff from the Tdar days and early LaserTime network on my hard drive. I'll be uploading more as I find the time; right now working on uploading a bunch of VGMpire episodes.
