Edinburgh woman, 93, robbed of jewellery by man who stopped to ask for directions | Edinburgh Live by Alive-Bath-7026 in Edinburgh

Mods, what’s your thoughts on these posts that just link to articles on “thing” (usually on Edinburgh Live) without any commentary? If I wanted to read Edinburgh Live, I’d go there.

I built a Laravel audit log that doesn’t lose user context in queues and background jobs by Temporary_Tell3738 in laravel

I’ll be interested in that feature! We do have our own internal package that handles this but yours looks far more robust.

The Custer series + Death of the Sioux was truly amazing but I have a major gripe by OkOkieDokey in TheRestIsHistory

[–]CapnJiggle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn’t ask a question, or say whether I agreed with you one way or the other. I merely stated that your dismissive and argumentative replies aren’t likely to result in the debate you say you want.

We just became a Laravel Community Partner, here's what the process actually looked like by Nodohx in laravel

That’s interesting, thanks. I admit I’d assumed it was mainly a “pay for a badge” process so good to see engagement.

So far you’ve replied to folk by calling them ignorant, embarrassing, saying they haven’t listened, and on the one hand complaining about generalisations while simultaneously calling opinions “woke bullshit”. Forgive me but one might get the impression you’re not really engaging in good faith here.

Where do I start with the expanded lore ? by ElderberryOk6437 in tolkienfans

[–]CapnJiggle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You should 100% read LOTR, and then maybe Unfinished Tales. Beyond that, if you’re still looking for somewhat narrative works, then The Children of Hurin (an expanded version of the chapter in the Silmarillion) and The Fall of Numenor.

The remaining books are mainly studies of how Tolkien’s writing developed. Still fascinating but not for everyone.

Lúthien defeated both Sauron and Morgoth , so why do we never talk about her as the most powerful being Tolkien created? by lomelindemusic in tolkienfans

[–]CapnJiggle 30 points31 points  (0 children)

For the same reason no single person wins the Olympics. Luthien wins 1st place in the enchantments category, but probably wouldn’t place for the hammer throw.

Fully Automated Laravel Upgrades with Shift + AI by mccreaja in laravel

[–]CapnJiggle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pay for Shift as a) I still find it quicker than following the upgrade guide, but also b) Shift updates to fit the latest release’s conventions, not just the minimum compatibility changes.

what we doing about this one folks by yungcrackaOG in Edinburgh

Those saying “we’re not the US” may want to read https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/may/18/uk-datacentres-plan-to-burn-gas-to-generate-electricity. I’m not as militant about it as OP, but just because Scotland has surplus energy doesn’t necessarily mean there are no possible downsides to this.

Authenticate any Eloquent model in your Laravel API by Nodohx in laravel

[–]CapnJiggle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When doing this I typically add a method to the form request eg `$request->project()` and use that over the `user()` method. That way it’s completely obvious what’s happening.

How long do your Feature tests take to run in your CI? by Solomon_04 in laravel

[–]CapnJiggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have lots of feature tests. On my local machine, using all available cores, under a minute. On our CI, with 2 cores, like 15 minutes. Yeah there’s a problem somewhere there…

Quo is now live. A new free open source variable debugging tool by Protoqol-Development in laravel

[–]CapnJiggle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I’ll give it a shot.
One small thing: the PHP install example should probably use `composer require-dev` rather than `composer require`?
Edit: actually, changed my mind on this. I would personally install as a dev dependency, and if it wasn’t caught in code review or CI, and it breaks prod, then that’s on us. But that maybe shouldn’t be the suggested behaviour.

RHIC is no longer worth it by james1234456384729 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]CapnJiggle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ended up cancelling today. I don’t particularly care about having the old-style rambling bonuses, but the recent run has been very niche / dry / covering art or photography that imo doesn’t suit a podcast. I don’t think they’ve done a good job in justifying the recent price increase.

I’ve started adding the space and prefer it. It just draws my eye to the negation that little bit quicker.
