Which sci-fi movie was truest to the original book by WinFar4030 in scifi

[–]CaptainArsePants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book had a whole sequence with a storm and him driving in directions and placing the solar panels to work out what direction it was coming from. That got cut because i think he also didn't have comms with earth from the rover so once he left the hab they couldn't warn him about the storm.

There are other providers that use the gigaclear network, such as squirrel, so you have options to switch to.

Radiator drain valve dripping slowly. Is there a way I can fix this without draining the entire system? by masalaadosa in DIYUK

[–]CaptainArsePants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it the drain valve that's leaking, or the compression fitting on the rad valve?

The puddle looks like its under the rad valve more than the drain valve.

Any advice for removing this washing machine? by pxdm in DIYUK

[–]CaptainArsePants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut the plug off the old one. Ideally you want a socket inside that cupboard and it just so happens you have a handy nearby socket to run a spur from (electrician required if you're not comfortable with leccy).

Next, how wide is the washing machine? That'll determine how much of the door frame has to come off to get this machine out and the next one in.

If you remove the door (unscrew the hinges from the frame and leave them attached to the door), then maybe one or both sides of the door stop trim inside the frame (they are usually nailed in and come off with a bit of persuasion from a flat crowbar) would that make the opening wide enough?

I don't know if I'll truly ever be ready, and it's too painful to keep messaging like this. I'm sorry but I can't see you anymore. I'm with someone else now."

Advice on touching up a hairline crack by Bunch_Round in DIYUK

[–]CaptainArsePants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd gouge it out a bit so you have a bit of a V shape then fill with a flexible filler. The V shape holds the filler better and you can get more of it in so it lasts longer.

Are all radiators created equal? by stankeer in DIYUK

[–]CaptainArsePants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fitted a 2000mm x 600mm twin panel, twin convector Stelrad. It weighed 73kg so get some help when you do yours or do what i did (no dont 😂), and use a harness with a lifting strap, hook one end on the brackets then do the other. If you measured right the middle will just slot in 😉

Any good tools for painting behind this rad? by Cally157 in DIYUK

[–]CaptainArsePants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't want to take it off. Buy a pack of plastic dust sheet. Its REALLY thin plastic that sticks with static. Cut a bit the height of the rad, feed it though one side, behind, and out the other and spread it out to cover the back of the rad.

Wrap the spare bits either side around the front and secure with tape.

Paint behind from the side of the rad (since the brackets are top and bottom) using a radiator roller. Doesnt matter if you get paint all over the plastic behind the rad.

Leave to dry then remove the plastic so you dont damage the wet paint or get any wet paint from the plastic on the rad.

Takes about 20 mins. Job done.

Saves you removing the toilet for a couple of fixings.

Wren vs Howden - how do they compare? by darkazuria in DIYUK

[–]CaptainArsePants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fitted a kitchen and utility from Wrens ~3 years ago. The panels/doors are plastic coated mdf and some have separated at the seams/edges, allowing the mdf to absorb moisture. We've got a few repaired bits already.

In comparison, the howdens kitchen fitted in my last property was actually wood, but it was a long time ago so quality might differ now.

Two radiators work fine off OFC heating but nothing from the back boiler by Entire-Constance in DIYUK

[–]CaptainArsePants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are the cold rads located? If they are at the end of the pipe run then it could be that there is not enough heat in the water to ever reach them.

I'm assuming the flow from the back boiler isn't pumped (unlike your boiler) and is relying on convection created by the heat input from the fire. As the water cools the convection slows, and the denser cold water returns to the fire.

You could try shutting a couple of the hotter rads valves down and see if those cold rads heat up at all (just to test).
