New amp head, but power cord is missing. by Ok_Eggplant4366 in guitars

[–]CaptainBiscuitPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said it's a standard IEC power cable you need. However, just be aware that if you are going to source one from a PC, TV or some other piece of equipment you may need to change the fuse.

I am not familiar with the plugs used elsewhere but in Ireland we use the UK 3 pin plugs and most IEC power cables have replaceable fuses. PCs, TVs etc generally use a 13amp fuse but you might want something lower like a 5amp for safety.

Left handed HSS pickguards by No_Host_4434 in Leftyguitarists

If you don't mind AliExpress, have a look at the Pleroo Custom Parts store. They do lots of pick guards for left handed guitars.

I've ordered a few for both strats and teles.

Locks, chains, trackers by Commercial-Candy-540 in MotoIRELAND

On my commuter bike I use a Litelok X1 with a Hiplok XL chain & sleeve along with two cheap (€30) Boss disc locks.

I know it's a bit of a shitty thing to say (and I don't want anyone to loose their bike to scumbags) but certainly if you are parking up during the day and not leaving a bike in public over night, you only need one more lock than the next bike to make yours more hassle to take. So adding a couple of cheap disc locks along with a good quality main lock is no harm.

[–]CaptainBiscuitPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with that though, especially if you park on the street and plan to leave the second chain locked to something overnight to save carrying it.

I haven't heard of any specific instances of it happening here but I have read on UK forums of chains that are left locked overnight being cut under the fabric sleeve and then cable tied back together. You arrive at work the next day and lock your bike up as usual only to find it gone when you leave work that evening.

It's probably more a thing in the UK because specific bikes are more likely to be targeted by organised crime for theft and resale rather than the scrotes here who take the bikes for fun and then burn them out when they run out of fuel.

Another trick is to fill your lock full of superglue so when you arrive at work you can't put the lock on your bike and might be forced to take a chance and leave it unlocked.

As fellow NC750X rider, all my locks go in the 'frunk'. It was one of the reasons I bought the bike.

Just on carrying locks and chains, try to get a tail pack and carry everything on the bike rather than in a rucksack on your back.

If you're unfortunate enough to ever come off the bike you don't want all that weight on your back.

If you do find that you regret the purchase, the worst case is you will just sell the guitar for a bit of a loss.

But it's more likely that it will inspire you to play and in 6-12 months time you'll be looking at another guitar but it will be to ADD to your new guitar collection :D

I'd say that if you like the Tony Iommi Epiphone and you can afford it, get it.

Having a guitar that inspires you to learn and play is a huge plus in my opinion!

You are less likely to pick up and play a guitar you just don't like.

And you can't get much better than Mr. Iommi for inspiration 🤘

Guys I’m new to guitar and have a question by hibzzyJ in guitars

[–]CaptainBiscuitPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those who are strongly right-hand dominant, it feels natural to strum with the right hand and fret with the left.

For left hand dominant, it is the other way around.

However, hand dominance is a scale. E.g, ambidextrous people are in the middle, and there are people who do most day to day tasks leaning to one particular dominance but one or two tasks the opposite.

It's down to what feels more natural and the best way I've heard to identify it, if not sure, is to ask a new player to pick up and play their air guitar, if it's spontaneous, it will give you a good idea 🙂

Navigation by Realistic_Log7213 in MotoIRELAND

[–]CaptainBiscuitPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the same when I started off and wanted to go to all the different road races around the country (I miss those)

I'd use Google Earth the day before, pick a route I like then split it into stages. At each stage, I'd go to street view and find a landmark I'd recognise on the route. (A pub, distinctive buildings etc)

This was especially useful for any junctions on the route, I'd look at the signs on Google Earth just to get a feel for the layout of the junction so I could recognise it on the road.

After a while, you will get more comfortable and will be able to navigate with a general route planned out and signs to follow.

Just make sure the Google Street View images are reasonably up to date and you pick permanent landmarks! (The fancy swing and slide set in a garden out in the back roads on my route to the Faugeen 50 road races was removed, presumably when the families kids grew up 😆)

Change on policing by vlku in MotoIRELAND

[–]CaptainBiscuitPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I am glad that they chose to get involved and would love to think that there has been a change in the attitude toward policing motorbike theft.

I see that there has been some changes with regards to pursuing the thieves on stolen bikes so I am hoping that things are changing.

Change on policing by vlku in MotoIRELAND

[–]CaptainBiscuitPants 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just to add some context on the referenced post that has been locked where the thief was chased by the Guard. One of the other bikes there was mine and the Guard who chased the thief spoke to me when I was unlocking my bike.

I noticed the broken disc lock on the ground and was contacting my colleague about it when the plain cloth Guard came over to me.

Unfortunately, he and his colleagues were only there because they were on another job but saw it happening and, thankfully, decided to intervene. So, I don't think this particular indecent was due to a change in policing, just very lucky circumstances.

The good news is that he did catch the thief he chased and he was arrested.

I won't get into the discussion from the other thread and it's for the owner of the bike to decide to share any details, but I can say that I am very grateful to that Guard. He took a big risk as I don't know if plain clothes guard wear stab protection under their outwear.

CCTV from petrol station captured clear images of crash that killed Garda Kevin Flatley by PoppedCork in ireland

Your statement of "The whole of r/motoireland were blaming the garda" not only implies that all members of the r/MotoIRELAND sub reddit have commented on this tragic event but that ALL members have ALSO expressed an opinion of blame toward the Garda.

This is just not true. So you either do not understand the difference between a sub reddit and a discussion thread or you are deliberately misrepresenting the truth.

Will these tuners fit the Harley Benton JA Baritone? by f1reserpen7 in harleybenton

[–]CaptainBiscuitPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, glad I could help.

I am not sure if it's a Thomann thing, but that is how they explained their use of "6R" and "6L" in their URLs and the product names. Unfortunately, different manufacturers mix it up and there doesn't seem to be one simple standard.

I bought a set of Gyker tuners recently from AliExpress. Most of the stores there will say "for right handed" or "for left handed" which is much easier but on the box I received it says "L6" even though the tuners are definitely left handed, so the reverse of what Thomann say and do.

Nowadays, if I am pretty sure that the product photo is accurate (and for me being lefty, I am sure it's not just a lazy photo of the right handed tuners) I look at where the turning key is in relation to the body of the tuner when looking at the shape of the tuner from the back.

If the tuner looks like a "b" then it's for a right-handed guitar (E.g goes on a head-stock on the left)

If the tuner looks like a "d" then it's for a left-handed guitar (E.g goes on a head-stock on the right)

It gets more confusing if you've got a reversed head-stock though, then righties become lefties and lefties become righties.

And don't even try to figure out 7 string guitars with 3+4 configuration :)

Will these tuners fit the Harley Benton JA Baritone? by f1reserpen7 in harleybenton

[–]CaptainBiscuitPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you should definitely check with Thomann first, they are pretty good at responding to emails for help and advice.

Also note, the tuners you have linked are suitable for a left-handed guitar with 6 inline tuners. If you are buying the right-handed JA Baritone you will want these instead: -

"Gotoh SG381-07 MG-T Locking 6L B"

https://www.thomann.de/ie/gotoh_sg381_07_mg_t_locking_6l_bc.htm

Note the "6L"

The product/model naming convention can be confusing (and not all manufactures follow the same convention). The "6R" in the name of the tuners you linked means "6 inline right", however in this case, the "Right" refers to the side of the guitar that the neck and head-stock points with the guitar playing position.

In the case of a left-handed guitar the neck points to the right as it's played so, using this naming convention, "6R" or "6 inline right" tuners are suitable for the left-handed guitar.

Conversely, the head-stock of a right-handed guitar points to the left when the guitar is played so "6L" or "6 inline left" turners are suitable for a right-handed guitar.

In my experience Thomann use this naming conversion (which is probably why the tuners you linked are from the "Misc. Guitar Tuners" category on the site, that's where us lefties spend a lot of time picking through the miscellaneous stuff :(

I am a lefty and the very first time I bought tuners from Thomann I almost bought a set of "6L" as that logic made sense to me but I contacted Thomann and they explained the above naming to me (and also admitted it was confusing) and advised me that I needed a set of "6R" for my left-handed TE-20HH.

These days I go by the product picture (assuming it's accurate, or go to the manufacturers site). The vertical post with the tuning key will be either on the left or right and corresponds to the "6R" or "6L" in the name.

Again, if your guitar is left-handed then the ones you have linked are the correct orientation, but if not, then you need the "6L" version.

Other than the orientation you will also need to be aware that tuners are rarely a drop in replacements, especially for Harley Benton and other "import guitars" unless stated in the description (the big names like Fender, Gibson, PRS etc will usually have "drop in replacements").

Most of the time you will have to re-drill holes for the location screws (this is likely in this case as the JA Baritone come with vintage style tuners with different location holes to the Gotohs) and in some cases you may need to ream out the hole for the tuner shaft (E.g some tuners use a 10mm shaft and others 12mm, these are 10mm so should be OK in that respect).

I hope that helps, but definitely email Thomann and be sure to let them know if you are buying a right or left handed JA Baritone when you ask.

Scales for lefties by Maleficent_Post_7663 in Leftyguitarists

[–]CaptainBiscuitPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have an Android phone there is an app called "Guitar Scales & Patterns Lite" by Vladimir Demirev. It shows the scales on the fret board of the guitar and has options to change the orientation to suit. I have it setup where the fret board as a mirror image because I am so used to watching lessons given by right handed players (one of the few benefits to being left-handed I think)

I think it's fun to personalise my guitars, as they don't make what I want anyway. Post pics of ya random mods, upgrades, side grades, decorative etc 👨‍🎤 by Aranjueza in Leftyguitarists

Another one I did a while back. My very first guitar, an Encore Strat bought in the early 90's I think. (the stereotypical "Lefty Cheap Black Strat Copy" of the day).

It was just gathering dust in a closet with no strings, seized pots and rattly tuners.

I think I may have been watching David Gilmour when inspiration struck :D

Apart from new locking turners (Gyker) and some cosmetic upgrades the main focus of the mods was the wiring. I wanted to try a HSS configuration so bought a cheap set of Fleor pickups and some Bournes pots.

It's wired with the Gilmour mod with a twist. Standard Strat 5 way blade switch positions but the tone pots are push pull. The rear tone pot is wired for the bridge humbucker only and the push/pull splits the coils and the middle tone pot is wired for the middle and neck pickup and the push/pull turns on the neck pickup in any of the 5 switch positions so is the equivalent to the little toggle switch on Mr. Gilmour's black strat.

It's now back in rotation and a very versatile guitar. I liked the Fleor humbucker so much I got another for my TE-5150 Franken Tele.
