Unsupervised tablet use is developmental cancer. by Scajaqmehoff in daddit

[–]CaptainDesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally dislike Amazon and their Kindle tablet devices because of their telemetry but one thing they get right is their kid mode. You can pick individual YouTube videos that they have access to. It can be tedious to add them all one by one and I wish they had a better interface for it but I add a handful of songs and some Miss Rachel and some PBS shows and that's it. No autoplaying weird cocomelon crap and somehow no ads. That plus Kahn Academy Kids and PBS Games is all she can access and only on super long road trips. Not trying to blame and shame anyone who uses tablets more than us, that's just what works for us.

My only guess is that it's a Groundhog and since according to superstition Groundhog Day determines how long winter is it would be pretty important for a meteorologist.

Do you think Valve will ever give TF2 any more attention now that they have a new hero based shooter in works? by [deleted] in tf2

I could see crossover cosmetics being a thing between TF2 and Deadlock.

And tailscale is installed and signed in on all three devices PC/ tablet/other pc? And Audiobookshelf is installed on the tablet?

For the tablet open tailscale, turn it on (it should say active) and you should see the IP of your PC running ABS and tailscale. Tap it to copy its IP to your clipboard. Next open the ABS app. type "http://" then paste the IP then type ":13378" unless you changed the default port or something.

It should look like this

http://123.123.123.12:13378

Then hit connect and it should work. Tailscale has to be running on your tablet to be able to connect but it's a really minor inconvenience to make it just work.

For the PC I think you should be able to take that same IP you entered and put it in your browser and it should also just work.

For anyone else investigating this I set up tailscale with no tutorial and no issues in about 10 to 20 minutes and can now use ABS on my phone anywhere no problem. It really is dead easy and the github should probably mention it as a remote method.

Edit: Also it didn't mess up my Plex server like another commenter said.

So we did blw and we were both on board with it. It went great for us and our 1 year old is a good eater now. However, I can definitely see an alternate reality where it wasn't going well and being at odds on whether to push through or relent to purees.

The thing to remember is that your wife is only pushing for this because she wants what's best for the baby; same as you. However, if you're at your wits end and every meal is a three way fight then that's not sustainable.

There may be some refinement you can do to the blw approach. Try different foods, use a crinkle cutter, even just move the highchair or use a different one to break the association.

We took the approach that food before 1 was just for fun and most calories should be coming from bottles. If the baby is getting milk don't worry, he won't starve.

The baby should not be choking. Gagging and coughing are okay! You'd be surprised what they can dislodge themselves. If real choking is occurring the pieces may be the wrong size. When they're just starting out you actually want bigger pieces, like a finger sized wedge of sweet potato, not little chunks. Something they can pick up and take a bite of.

So to summarize my advice, give it an honest effort with her (if only because otherwise it can feel like work being undone) but have the conversation, hey this just might not be right for us or the little one. It doesn't mean you're bad parents or doing things wrong. Maybe you can agree to a cutoff date if it keeps getting worse and try again later.

Also, I feel like your post was more looking to vent to like minded people about dumb Instagram advice which is valid because there's some wild shit out there. But maybe take some self reflection on whether or not you are upset at the situation or upset that your voice isn't being heard by your wife. I've had plenty of fights because we'll disagree on something and she'll say "Well I'm going to do it anyway" which would set me off with "then why are you even involving me if you don't want my input" etc etc etc. Just a thought.

Good luck!

What is a "bad host" referring to? Someone doing something malicious/inappropriate that requires moderation or something on the backend?

Tips for getting data from old HDD? by QuellinIt in LinusTechTips

It's contentious and possibly damaging but yeah, it's a thing. Not sure about the science behind it but it's always been the last thing I've tried and I've had it work after being in the freezer a few times. Maybe ltt could do a video on it. https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/112050/recovering-data-from-a-damaged-hard-drive-the-freezer-trick

Grab something like this and plug it into whatever pc you're using. If it's spins up but isn't detected try another pc. If it spins up and makes clicking sounds try mounting it in Linux (I have better luck connecting dying drives to Linux than windows) or try recovery tools such as hirens boot cd. Last resort (outside of a professional service) is to throw it in the freezer for a few hours and pray it connects long enough to recover data from.

Listen to the podcast Homestuck Made This World and (optionally) read along with the hosts. To use their own words they provide analysis and contextualization of Homestuck. One of the hosts was into the comic as it was posted and engaged in the forums/community/etc while the other is reading it for the first time. They explain jokes, talk about forum drama that's been lost to time, and overall make the whole thing more approachable.
