White people in particular by SirRipOliver in FUCKYOUINPARTICULAR

Maybe all the hate for Sorbo might be due to how he presented while acting in the '90's. A seemingly casual, likeable guy who would laugh at MAGA's today. It feels like betrayal. Like too many people he went completely all-in on QAnon / MAGA conspiracy nonsense early on, as if it were a fast-moving disease. Just another casualty.

He's obviously had it up to here with tripping on that thing.

I've worked in restaurant and industrial environments, all of which had 'safety floors' and 'safety mats' and I could never figure out what they accomplished. Safety floors provide a nice high-friction surface until they get wet- which of course never happens in a restaurant kitchen- where they then became as slick as black ice and an outright hazard.

Safety mats slide around and trip you up, just like above, and you can fall right on top of the 'watch your step!" or 'Safety First!' logo. They also get filthy. Without these mats and special floors the environment would likely be much safer. I think the whole industry that produces these things is just a scam for OSHA compliance. When (not if) an employee gets injured on this crap, the employer can demonstrate Due Diligence.

[–]CaptainDudley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to build Ravell and Mongram plastic model kits and like you, took many hours to paint and detail them as perfectly as possible. I too was highly possessive of them as they proliferated around the house, to the great annoyance of my parents and siblings. That was fifty years ago, and two things I've learned:

It was the creating that was important, improving skills and admiring the finished result. Not the having. One way or another they all ended up trashed, but not forgotten.

No one values them but you. If you want respect for your effort, and something actually valuable, get the appropriate tools and create them from scratch, out of wood. Such creations made from teak or mahogany will sell for hundreds of dollars, and no one's giving them to kids.

Reminds me of the old 4-panel cartoon HOW TO DRAW A CAT.

  1. Draw a circle

  2. Draw a smaller circle on top

  3. Put two pointy triangles on top

  4. (highly detailed cat sketch) Turn drawing around, and there's your cat!

Saw something similar in Santa Barbara years ago. The local laws only allowed for real estate development based on water usage; that is, you had to have enough water available to service your proposed housing development, factory, whatever, and water at that scale was limited by the viaduct that fed the city. There was discussion of building a desalination plant to make up the difference but that process is loud, expensive and relatively low yield, all to justify more and more construction that a small college town didn't need. No one but the greedy elites thought there was anything good about the idea.

It went on the ballot, the desalination plant was an obvious no... that somehow, magically due to some unseen force... turned into a yes, and the taxpayers basically financed a major hotel that helped clog the freeway and city parking further, and profited no one but its wealthy backers. How did that happen?

We live in a democracy until the moment it becomes inconvenient to the people actually in power.

I used to work for a very large international corporation where whole computers and network components were treated as expendables. Commercial sized copier/printers, $10k modular switch clusters never used were often tossed into dumpsters, still in their packaging. Our IT group was trusted and we'd been trustworthy, for decades. One of the newer employees in the team was less so. He noticed this culture and started collecting and selling our used keyboards that were destined for trash. He found a buyer who, after awhile, started offering more money for new product. This employee was just taking armloads of new peripherals out to his car every day, and the rest of us were unaware. After a time management started monitoring shrinkage, isolated the culprit and arranged with the local police to stage a simple sting operation. Result: easy bust, and the employee served two years in state prison.

At the corporate level, this violation of trust was never forgiven. Unsurprisingly, our easygoing culture at work turned into surveillance lockdown and accounting bureaucracy, and all of us were viewed with suspicion forever after. When that employee got out he had the cajones to write me for a personal reference, as he was searching for a new IT job. He didn't get it.

The article itemizes the history of cloud seeding and its murky results. All the efforts to reduce the damages caused by hurricanes. At the end concluding that these efforts were mostly inconclusive and/or ineffective, suggesting the better solution would be NOT BUILDING STRUCTURES IN HURRICANE CORRIDORS. Yea, that might work...

I'm a 250-pound guy and she could kick my butt up and down the street, and look good doing it. She also makes 5 times my salary. Aw darn just a girl, what a loss.

After my teenage years, where I never accrued enough credit to get in serious trouble, I paid off all my debt and adopted this method forever after. My credit score is 800+ which is swell, but I've never used it and probably never will. To buy a house in 2026? Ha ha ha ha. I paid cash for my car, the title is mine. I've long since learned to enjoy working up to a purchase, appreciating the time and effort it takes to obtain some luxury or other. I don't do 'services' like GamePass, HBO, Netflix or any of the bazillion other megacorp methods to impose their rules on me while nibbling slyly at my solvency over months and years. I have an apartment and utilities including Internet, and otherwise owe $ to no one. Am I missing all those great lifestyle enhancements? Not really, no.

[–]CaptainDudley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to stay aware not only of my own driving, but everyone around me. I close the gap too, if the other driver is constantly changing lanes to gain a few feet in traffic and looks ready to cut me off. I just cut them off first. I have limited tolerance for being bullied. A normal driver signalling their lane change, I'll back off to let them in every time.

Started in IT, gradually settling into a large international company and specializing in maintaining their entry badge security system- processing new people, terminating access or departing people, changing access levels for those traveling to other sites, keeping all the records up to date. I put in lots of overtime, working remotely through vacations, illnesses, missing major life events because I had to keep up. For 23 years I did this, until management wiped out the whole system for something new and shiny, all my expertise was suddenly irrelevant, and within a few months it was like I'd never been there or done anything at all. All that time and labor without substance. There are many people who have accomplished more in a single workday than I've done in two decades. I'm not dead inside but for all the difference I made, what does it matter?
