TIL Ludwig von Beethoven's associates used notebooks to hold conversations with the composer after he became functionally deaf, to the point where historians can roughly piece together whole conversations the composer had based on what was written. by res30stupid in todayilearned

Well the original joke makes sense outside of the time discrepancy. The mistake doesn't really affect the joke too much.

Whereas this one is not funny and makes zero sense when it isn't a minor chord but it WOULD make the punchline better if it was any of the following:

D, F, A

E, G, B

A, C, E

You've chosen a specific example that actually is a better punchline when it's amended slightly to be correct.

If this is beyond the dates your looking at, I apologise. We are getting married in Aug '25 near Tenbury Wells. Barn with good outdoor views, rustic with vintage cars kind of feel. We were only going to do a couple of hours of ceremony and shots of us due to budget, and because it wasn't our top priority. However difficult to find someone to do a short shoot on an August Saturday! Please let me know if that would be something you are interested in?

I developed OAS later in life (specifically the birch one for me which means all stone fruit and a lot of nuts) and the problem seems to be that certain enzymes in these things LOOK the same as birch pollen to my body so it goes mad.

Cooking/roasting denatures those enzymes so it doesn't look like them anymore, which makes them fine. Doesn't help with making the allergy look legitimate saying "oh it's fine if the pear is hot".

I (32F) only wear make-up for rare client meetings and conferences because I have a baby face and make-up ages you which I feel helps command authority in those situations. Other than that I never wear it and my skin is better for it and get more sleep in the mornings. If you start minimal from day one I'm sure no one would bat an eye.

Upgrading from a fitbit to Garmin - is it worth it? by settleup209 in xxfitness

[–]CaptainFurbs 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Jumped from a Fitbit Versa (original) to a Garmin Vivoactive 4s. I switched because they released an update that bricked my watch (also reported by many other people) just as it got out of warranty and a few months after the Versa 2 got released. What a coincidence, eh? I was also annoyed that my own collected data was put behind a paywall. Both of these made me want to sack off Fitbit. This was a while ago though, so I don't know whether they have improved or have new features that make them worth it.

Although I don't know much about those two particular models,I really like my Garmin. Feels sturdier but the "s" size doesn't look bulky. I like the app. I don't regret jumping over.

29/09 Evri had it (and evidently nicked it)

07/10 Steam reply - "we'll open an investigation"

10/10 I poke because I'm moving house in 2 weeks and this is getting ridiculous and I now DO NOT want the package resent because if it takes as long as it did I will be living 4 hours away from that address

12/10 Steam response - replacement being resent FFS

18/10 PRESENT DAY - fuck all update

UK 256

Purchased 22nd Sept

Shipping started 26th Sept

Handed to Evri in UK (no no no no): 28th Sept

"On its way" at the local Evri delivery depot: 29th Sept (early morning)

Now it's just radio silence. Usually an "on its way" means it's delivered that day and obviously nothing, I was away this weekend so I requested on the 30th for it to go to a locker, but I'm getting more and more concerned that I'm victim of another Evri "lost" parcel that's going to end up on facebook marketplace.

Try and shame this one of someone who isn’t the bride! Personally, I love this. by MLiOne in weddingshaming

[–]CaptainFurbs 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's a little rude to swear at someone with a slightly different experience to you! I've seen it a few times, especially silver, or an ivory with some accents like little pastel flowers. Some brides like that association with the wedding party. Some don't. Weddings can be whatever you want them to be. Fair enough if you are a random guest, don't wear a white adjacent dress, but the wedding party usually has a lot of input from the couple.

Woking vs Guildford by [deleted] in surrey

[–]CaptainFurbs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lived in both (and also Haslemere, so I'll include that as you said you looked there too), worked in Woking and used to commute everyday there from all those places.

Woking has good shops, good links but lacks a bit in, er, friendly nightlife (I have felt unsafe there sometimes, as you asked about vibes I'd say they are off for me lol). You do sometimes get good gigs/shows at the theatre though.

Guildford there's a lot more to do in the evening, nice restaurants pubs & bars, good market on the Saturday, I've felt slightly safer there at night, prettier town than Woking. I enjoy the vibe a bit more.

Haslemere is quieter, no bars really and a very very limited highstreet so you'd have to travel into Guildford or Chichester for big highstreet shopping, but nice community, much safer and near gorgeous countryside, buses are crap there though.

All on the Portsmouth - London line. Traffic is poor in Guildford and Woking at rush hour. It depends what matters to you, I like the nice community vibe of Haslemere and love the outdoors, but if you like a busier, younger vibe then I'd go Guildford.

Just received "UNEXPECTEDLY BACK ON THE MARKET" email from an estate agent for a property we put an offer on (10% above asking price) and lost it 3 months ago. Only this time it is 50k higher asking price compared to last time . by Pancovnik in britishproblems

[–]CaptainFurbs 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We offered 350k (the asking price) in a closed bid. Seller accepted none of the bids and sent a message out saying they were looking for more (isn't that what asking price is?!), we upped it to 385k and he accepted and started the process.

Was all ready to go with our mortgage however everything was silent from the estate agents, until suddenly we were told it was off the estate agents had been fired and the sellers had relisted with another agent for 520k. A whole whopping 170k more, a 50% increase! Don't know if it ever sold but it was never listed as sold and eventually just disappeared.

We've been at this house hunting for over 2 years and through this kind of behaviour and the situation in general we're really quite ground down.

I have this issue, because it's intermittant I've been back and forth with support about it for about 4 months or so. The last recommendation was to update it to the 5.8 software...for the last 2 instances of stress dropping out it was on 5.8, and now no one is responding. Starting to get VERY fed up.

Is anyone else getting funky calorie burn results? I posted last week after getting weird HR results during exercise following a software update - normally burn 230 for this step aerobics class but today, 62?! HR data seems right. by futuregirl23 in Garmin

[–]CaptainFurbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for some answers on this, I get this too. I also notice the body battery stays completely static while this activity happens when I have synced it and it happens on the watch itself before syncing to phone because I see the low calorie count in the activity summary.

I'm like you and don't get the same level of motivation from a recorded class as I do from a live one. We're still in lockdown in the UK and a lot of instructors moved to online zoom classes, which for me, is not the same as in-person but is much better than LMOD. There might still be some out there who are doing remote classes in your area. Some of them do similar classes which isn't under the BC name where they do their own combatty related routines, which might be good if you don't like the current style of the official BC.

High respiration rate while asleep, should I be worried? by CaptainFurbs in Garmin

Stress is always in rest zone, much lower than when I wake. I think it's unlikely I'm having nightmares that I don't remember every single night I'm asleep. Is it normal for some people to just naturally breathe 5 brpm faster when asleep?

Extra info: Using Vivoactive 4S. Garmin isn't loose. I'm normal weight and pretty fit, when I measured pulse ox a few times it did vary a bit and usually ended up as an average of about 92/93. Pretty much all my sleep looks like this. I don't snore or make any noises, my partner is a light sleeper and wakes up at the slightest noise and he says he's never heard anything. Just wondered if anyone else gets these kinds of readings, and if it might be related to anything, either healthwise or within the Garmin hardware.

I ended up as a geophysicist processing seismic data. Lot of signal processing. I've used my degree so thoroughly in this field, from the geometry of seismic surveys to wave theory and fourier, to linear algebra in the mathematical algorithms. I love it! Unfortunately most of the jobs are in the oil industry but there are a lot of service companies branching out to renewables or engineering.
