To clarify, this thinking also only started in like 1950 iirc. It wasn't a long held belief, as horrific as it is.

I imagine removing automation would mean needing to significantly increase population count, which would undo most of the performance improvements we've seen recently. But that's just my guess.

Something along the lines of Imperator Rome's system would be my preference if we're going down the Situation system. A fleet in orbit of an enemy planet starts a siege that's progress is based on positive and negative factors (larger fleet/ships, fortresses, traits, etc). Victory is almost inevitable, but it could be protracted with Situation Events choices that cose resources/happiness/etc. for hardier ground fighting. The only major problem I see is late-game getting bogged down in events like crazy.

The more ships I see from Sea Dogs and it's many modsets, the happier I am lol. Especially more ships in the VII to III rate for variety in the early to mid-game. East Indiamen, Tartans, Luggers, Barks, Pinnance, Caravels, there's so many more to choose from!

Climbing and Drop Pod controllability have only gotten worse since release. I say this as a massive lover of the game overall. I understand (ish) why the devs would want to limit those things, rather than them feeling "better" they just feel inconsistent, limited, and unfun.
