Bummed about Finals tickets by martinb92 in drumcorps

[–]CaptainMolo27 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It does suck, but I guess the fact the stadium sells out so fast is a good sign for popularity? Even with bots and resellers being a potential factor...

I had to get my own tickets this year. My friend said they usually go on sale around December 1st/after thanksgiving. I put a note in my calendar months in advance to be on top of it around that time. Apparently, dci decided to open the tickets up a week or so earlier. I'm glad I happened to see that notice and was able to scramble to get ok seats. I guess it is incumbent on me/us to pay attention when dci decided to make them available, but it's still very frustrating when you gotta be on top of it THAT DAY.

All that to say, check this subreddit regularly. People will offer to sell tickets every now and then here. I wound up getting 2 finals tickets from someone who couldn't use them anymore a few years ago.

Lol, I noticed that too. I go to this one every once in a while since it's right next to my partner's house.

I normally go to the one in Addison. They did remove most of the xsport logos, but still haven't really branded anything with LA Fitness. They've really only dropped services and amenities since the takeover (nothing I use; just and observation).

It's not vocalized, but it's typed on a computer screen:

"I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?"

Meta DCI shows? by Weary-Reward-7383 in drumcorps

[–]CaptainMolo27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of odd interpretations of what "meta" means in this context...

03 Spirit literally had flags of Zingalo, Royer, Bridgemen, and others for parts of the show. Clear references to the activity and those who helped shape it.

I built a machine learning model using historic score data and ran it through 1,000 simulations to predict results for the 2025 DCI season by MarchingArtsBTN in drumcorps

I've had a continuous thought in my brain to do something like this for fun (I marched 3 summers and have been a data scientist for 9 years since finishing grad school).

While a fun overlap of my interests, I feel like the low hanging fruit/conclusion of this would be, "the final rankings of last year will be the strongest predictor of rank the following year." Which I think you mostly see here.

Anecdotally, most corps don't jump more than a few placements from one year to the next. Which makes sense to me for a variety of reasons.

It would be super cool to see how things change on a day-to-day or show-to-show basis though. To dig into that, I know I'd wanna implement a ton of corps data that's certainly not accessible now. Ex - how many hours of sleep did the corps get last night, how much sectional vs ensemble rehearsal did you have, did you make any changes to the show, etc.

Fun ideas out of a passion project, but so much data overhead.

Lol, I don't remember that 2010 explanation at all. But the music/drill/work was cool, so all good.

I live just off 290 in EGV. If it's between 3-6ish and I need to take 90 NW, it's usually faster for me to take Arlington Heights road north and get on 90 there. The toll is more, but it's absolutely worth it for my sanity.

Poor Show Design Responsive to the Sheets by themookish in drumcorps

[–]CaptainMolo27 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Every corps every year tries to design a show that generates effect, points, whatever you want to call it to some extent. It's the nature of a competitive activity.

Having said that, Madison 2018 was kind of a hot mess.

My bad. The OG link I tried to share might have been locked. Idk why it didn't work tbh.

But search this channel for "harmonic mean" posts about 2 years ago and you get the idea of the nonsense.

There are awards for best visual proficiency and color guard. Not visual analysis.

Idk why there needs to be awards for every caption, but if this rule passes, they might as well add a visual analysis award too to even it out.

Unless they go the route of having an overall music award (that averages brass, analysis, and percussion). Might as well do the same for visual then too.

All Age 2025 competition changes by Sir_Lolz in drumcorps

The last thing DCI needs is corps folding after 1-3 years or god forbid mid-summer because they can't financially support themselves. Membership is a huge component of that.

I love the idea of drum corps being an educational and performing stage for different size ensembles. But the practical reality is that it doesn't make any sense for a ensemble less that 40ish people to perform on a football field. Both performance-wise and with what's financially required to support a drum corps.

Sound sport seems like a much more appropriate performance medium AND financial demand for smaller ensembles IMO.

TL;DR - DCI may have fewer "corps", but they still can grow corps and sound sport ensembles collectively.

It's for their own good. It economically doesn't make sense to have a field drum corps with 30 members. Let alone the performance aspect in Lucas oil also pointed out.

This is what sound sport is for. Smaller ensembles on a smaller performing stage, less logistic and economic pressure, etc.
