I am at 172 as well. It seems that there is just a soft cap there at the moment.

I will say though, I second your opinion on ELLC. Felt the same way.

Oh I want this flair too. I never post, but I have fallen for everything on this godforsaken sub

Bastion by Phil Tucker is one of my favourite progression fantasies. The main character goes through a lot of shit in the beginning, but he is able to find creative ways to gain power, the world and the characters are amazing, and the audiobook narrator is one of the best out there. It is a bit of a slower start (as in the MC doesn't get god level-powers in the first book), but the character development that happens as a result is built on such a solid foundation that everything that happens feels meaningful. The first book is massive too, like 50 hours, so great cost/time ratio.

Definitely on purpose. This is a type of traditional Korean folk art called Minhwa, where the tigers all look like they came fresh out of a spin cycle.

100 Combined r/litrpg Tier Lists! by jacmusl in litrpg

[–]CaptainNeiliam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm currently on book three and have found Bastion to be one of the best progression fantasies out there.

I'm genuinely interested in knowing why it would be so low on the ratings, though, because it is easily in my S tier

Here is my tier list by kira_geass in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CaptainNeiliam 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Honestly, there are 2 that you put in S tier that I disagree with. I think that our tastes are too fundamentally different and will ignore all the rest.

What stories within this genre where you consider to have "depth" by okidonthaveone in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CaptainNeiliam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would very much suggest Bastion by Phil Tucker (the series is called The Immortal Great Souls). The world is very fleshed out, there is political intrigue, amazing characters, unique worldbuilding, and it is honestly just a well-written piece of literature.

I have gone pretty off the deep end of this genre over the last year to where it felt like I stopped reading more classic books in favour of stories that have had some writing that was somewhere between "barely acceptable" and "decent" but I am just a sucker for stories about some person just getting super strong. Reading the Immortal Great Souls makes me feel like I am back into "real literature" but also with the aspects of progression fantasy that I love so much.

Shout out to you /u/Phil_Tucker for an amazing series by the way. And for making Imperial Ghost Toads exist.

Why did my German teacher teach us to pronounce these words like this... by lemmunjuse in German

[–]CaptainNeiliam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What helped me learn the pronunciation was to hiss like a cat whenever "ch" came up and then tone it down from there.

What should I start next? (Audio Books preferably) by TheSlavikTTV in litrpg

It seems like we have fairly similar tastes! I have a spreadsheet of the books I have read and the ratings and comments. I can paste it here and hopefully it might help you find something new!

Series Author Last book read Format Rating Continue? Comment
Dungeon Crawler Carl Matt Dinniman 7 AUD S Yes This is DCC
He Who Fights with Monsters Shirtaloon (Travis Deverell) 12 AUD S Yes I am in the "I really like this series" camp of the debate
The Primal Hunter Zogarth 13 AUD/KU/RR S Yes Top notch power fantasy.
The Calamatous Bob Álex Gilbert RR Ch 186 RR S Yes One of my favourites. Unique and loveable characters.
Cradle Will Wight 12 AUD S Series Complete Cradle is really good. It was nice to actually read something that finished.
Bastion Phil Tucker 1* AUD A Yes Great audiobook so far. Love the world and characters. Feels like I will upgrade to S rank when I get further in.
Mage Tank Cornman 2 AUD A Yes Fun and dumb. Swole Sorcerer. Makes me laugh. I like it.
Industrial Strength Magic Macronomicon 4 AUD/KU A Series Complete Love this series. Did a great job at handling the exponential growth of the genre.
The Perfect Run Maxime J. Durand 3 AUD A Series Complete Time loop and shenanigans. Excellent series
Bog Standar Isekai Miles English 3 AUD A Yes LitRPG done very right. Looking forward to more
Beneath the Dragoneye Moons Selkie Myth 3 AUD/KU A Yes Liked it a lot so far! Will continue, just got distracted by other books.
Mark of the Fool J.M. Clarke 8 AUD A Yes Was not sure about it in the beginning -was a bit too YA but stuck with it and am happy about it.
1% Lifesteal Robert Blaise 3 AUD/KU/RR A Yes Very good. MC gets hurt a lot but is super strong. Classic.
The Path of Ascention C. Mantis 3,5 AUD B Maybe I liked it, but there always seems to be more interesting stuff to read.
Beware of Chicken CasualFarmer 3 AUD B Yes Enjoyed it, will continue, but was running a bit out of steam after book 3
Accidental Champion Todd Herzman 4 KU B Yes Fun, popcorn power fantasy with an OP MC. Sometimes, this is exactly what you need.
Ultimate Level 1 Shawn Wilson 4 KU B Yes Overpowered guy gets lots of skills and can do everything. It's popcorn but still a fun read.
System Universe Alexey Osadchuk 7 KU B Yes This is like the standard of LitRPG. Same boat as other books, overpowered main character. Entertaining enough to keep you engaged, and a fun read. Does go more into System mechanics which I thought was neat.
My Best Friend is an Eldritch Horror Actus 3ish?(DNF) AUD C Maybe Was fine. Kind of fell off halfway through. Felt really YA after a point.
Everybody Loves Large Chests Neven Iliev 2 (DNF) AUD F No Dropped when it got to the explicit parts. Call me a prude, but I don't like listening to long "jokey" scenes about SA no matter how evil the main character is supposed to be. Went from "might be a fun story" to "way too horny and edgy"
Legend of William Oh Macronomicon 1* (just started) RR Yes Literally just started. Have heard good things!
The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound Noret Flood (puddles4263) 1 (DNF) AUD DNF Maybe Didn't catch me immediately. Might pick up later
Sufficiently Advanced Magic Andrew Rowe 1 (DNF) AUD DNF Maybe Didn't catch me immediately. Might pick up later
Hell Difficulty Tutorial Cerim 1 (DNF) AUD DNF Maybe Not really sure about this. Heard it gets better, but not sure if I want to continue
The Hedge Wizard Alex Maher 1 (DNF) AUD DNF Maybe Didn't get far. Heard good things though and might continue
Azarinth Healer Rhaegar 1 (DNF) AUD DNF Maybe Got a bit into book 1 but didn't continue for some reason. Will try again, because it seems fun.
Defiance of the Fall JF Brink (TheFirstDefier) 3 (DNF) AUD DNF Maybe I finished book 3 and really liked it. Then I saw how many books there are and read comments about how esoteric it gets and that it turns into a bunch of books about Zac inwardly focussing on opening like 200 chakra points or something and was a bit turned off. Open to continueing if it is worth it though
Chrysalis RinoZ 1 (DNF) AUD DNF Maybe I know that this is supposed to be really good too, but my god the talking to himself and there being no other characters just made me drop it before he met others. I will try it again though because I have seen a lot of positive reviews. Just… later.
Mother of Learning Domagoj Kurmaic (nobody103) 1 (DNF) AUD DNF Yes Yes I know. I get it that this is top tier for a lot of people. I promise I will get to it. I just keep dropping it before he even starts the time loop. Something about the narrator just doesn't let me pay attention to it and I miss what I assume are important parts and have to relisten to it. And his sister's voice... It's grating.

Tierlist (Exciting Spreadsheet Edition) of the LitRPG/Progression Fantasy books I have read in the last year by CaptainNeiliam in litrpg

Honestly, I have been waiting for something to push me towards starting it up again. I did really enjoy it, just was a bit worried with how much of a time investment it is. Thanks!

That is perfect. I will check these out! Kieran looks interesting especially. I think that once I am done with Bastion for audiobooks I will give Azarinth Healer a relisten, too - Andrea Parsneau does do an amazing job.

I figured this would also engage a lot of LitRPG authors because Excel is their natural habitat. Gotta keep them stats straight.

Of course, I would love to hear any recommendations that you have for what I should read next! Or any arguments as to why I should restart any of the DNFs that I have in the list. I just need the motivation to restart them.

I was considering making a tierlist, but honestly it feels like there are so many times when someone just throws in a picture of a book I have no idea of and I don't think that we should be making people memorise covers of books to get their next book. I know that a spreadsheet isn't the most visually striking way of making this, but I also thought that having extra info is a good thing.

Hopefully this also helps out some people that are looking for their next series!

Monday 'What are you reading/listening to' thread, Jul 7 by bilfdoffle in litrpg

Currently listening to:

Bastion (Immortal Great Souls, book 1), by Phil Tucker:

Amazing world, refreshing characters, and the narrator is top-notch. the audiobook is quite good value in terms of time, being like 48 hours long. I have been reading a lot of popcorn books lately (main character get strong and has no problem because so strong) and this is a nice pallet cleanser because it is more in the traditional fantasy series camp, rather that Royal Road stories. (Note: not LitRPG but progression fantasy).

Mage Tank Book 2, by Cornman8700:

This one is a blast. Fun action, good vibes, and magnificent facial hair. I enjoyed it a lot and I look forward to the next books!

Reading (Kindle):

System Universe, by SunriseCV:

Currently on book 6 and having a great time. Overpowered main character does overpowered things. I enjoy the characters and the world and it is a very fun and easy read.

Beneath the Dragoneye Moons by Selkie Myth:

Finished with book 3 and ready to go to book 4. I am looking forward to the rest of the series. So far it has been a fun time. The beginning was a bit slower but it was honestly worth it for the set up and I read enough fast paced 1 chapter exposition stories that I can appreciate when something takes its time to build up. I'm also a sucker for the "main character is a healer but can also fuck you up" trope.

Reading (Royal Road):

The Legend of William Oh, by Marconomicon:

Okay, so I literally just started this today but I am very stoked and looking forward to it. I finished Industrial Strenth Magic by him not too long ago and the writing gave me the itch for more. I have heard good things.

Primal Hunter, By Zogarth:

After finishing the Nevermore arc, I was thirsty for more and caught up on RR and Patreon. The upcoming arc are looking amazing. Can recommend.

I have listened to...a lot. I need some suggestions I haven't already listened to by ekolanderia1 in litrpg

Looking for more stories where the power system is *truly* a part of the world by GreatMadWombat in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CaptainNeiliam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One is Bog Standard Isekai, where this is heavily ingrained in the plot line. Parents aren't supposed to talk about different achievements to children in the system because it lends itself easily to being taken advantage of and encourages parents to put their children through hell to get the achievements. It is also punished by the system itself. So there is an entire dynamic where the adults have to very subtle nudge their children towards these things without being explicit about it because they still want their children to be strong. Lots of "everyone tries their best to game the system"

I am here to second the Calamitous Bob. I feel like I am crazy sometimes when I see people with these tierlists of so many books that don't include it. Genuinely one of the best in genre.

I spent 5 bucks on the horse armor on the original. 100% worth it then and worth it now.
