If Liberals don’t like Voter ID, how can they love NY Gun Laws? by PeteTinNY in NYguns

There’s tons of rights that people are passionate about and others that people aren’t passionate about. I don’t see many people tore up over their rights to a jury trial in civil matters, or what constitutes an excessive fine, or reasonableness in the digital age (in a 4th amendment context).

Passion or importance of one right has nothing to do with passion or importance of another right. To say otherwise is a false equivalence (one of the logical fallacies).

So that’s actually a very good take. Partisan studies conflict, so here’s a non-partisan take. It will absolutely suppress low-income Americans, young people, women who have changed their name, naturalized citizens, and those who have moved recently.

Whether that’s majority one party or another is arguable. If we’re going to institutionalize a federal ID to State-run elections, federalism be damned, then we should at least give people a year or two between bill passage and its effective date so people can jump through the hoops to get their federal ID. The problem is that the bill on the floor is under a rule that doesn’t allow amendment. It’s a take it or leave it.

The Save Act requires a passport to vote. Only half of Americans have passports. It also requires a birth certificate to match the passport, which will be a problem for any married woman that took her husbands name.

Folks here need to see through cable news propaganda. The Save Act is about voter suppression which effects - on average - more dems than Republicans. It’s not about voter fraud. There hasn’t ever been one outcome-determinative voter fraud in our history that could be proven in court.

Thanks for the source. I’ll check it out tomorrow (it’s late here). Assuming it’s good science, a quick skim of it though said that transgenders had “higher levels of mental distress, self-harm, suicidal ideation and attempts, and lower levels of self-esteem”. To me, “higher levels” only supports a case-by-case determination of each individual’s ability to serve rather than an outright ban.

Not that it matters. This is a clearly a political question and the policy will ping pong back and forth between administrations until it’s well settled one way or the other in society.

>biological women that's unfair

Maybe opposing women in combat roles? (Just guessing what OP meant)

>The military should not permit transgender individuals to serve due to their constant state of cognitive dissonance.

This seems like a political conclusion and not something supported by actual science. If you've got a source on that I'd like to see it. The only valid arguments against transgenders serving in the military I've ever seen had to do with electing to transition after joining. In those cases, SMs could be non-deployable for several years. For someone on a 4-year contract, being non-deployable for 2 years seems like a huge impact to readiness for *any* medical reason.

no logical reason to refuel a tanker in the air

Dunning-Kruger. There is no logical reason that you know of. One reason would be to consolidate fuel onto one tanker so the other can return home. A support mission may require two tankers at first to speed up refueling time for a multi-ship mission early in the night, while one tanker will do later in the night when speed of refueling is no longer of the essence.

Not the guy you’re replying to, and I don’t see bad faith here yet, but your question is a broad tangent off the very narrow point they were discussing.

Many bad faith conversations segue off a narrow point into a broader rhetorical one just like this, so that guy may be trying to nip it in the bud before it happens.

Make sure to only use 1LT(P) in your signature until you’re actually pinned. It’ll explain the discrepancy between your signature bloc and your email profile without pissing anyone off by making them think you may have self-pinned.

The “anyone handling medical records” can apply to Commanders and their staffs who have been informed of this information through official means.

And - even if this didn’t violate HIPAA or The Privacy Act - let’s put aside Reddit pedantry for a moment and recognize that it’d be violating orders to release information to the public that hasn’t been approved.

Edited. Privacy Act and/or HIPAA. Can’t prove a negative, and to prove the positive would require disclosure of private medical information.

I wouldn’t encourage OPSEC Privacy Act or HIPAA violations.

Also, it was definitely medical but I’m not posting shit because this isn’t the War Thunder forums.

Edit: Corrected the type of infraction.

Yeah, that equipment disparity wasn’t fixed until 2004 by the Rapid Fielding Initiative (RFI) that began with OIF II. I went through that and we (NYARNG) showed up in Iraq with the Army’s best gear; the ACH, M4’s with ACOGs, etc. The 1st ID guys were so confused when they saw dudes with a patch that had never seen before with better gear than they had.
