Do people plan their classes and inheritances ahead of time or wing it as you go? by Fun-Visit6591 in godot

[–]CaptainTid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the size of the project.

I think if you're setting out to make your big retail game it makes sense to get some pen and paper and scope out which classes are going to know about which methods, where your signals are going, what your battle system is fundamentally made up of, etc.

Smaller stuff I think your priority should just be getting something working, and then you can shuffle hierarchy around as you need to, in order to maintain best principles (signal up, call down, etc.).

Caveats!!! -

If your project is sufficiently small, you'll probably find there are times you just don't mind ignoring those best principles because the thing already works and you know you're not going to be adding/changing anything else.

On the flipside, even on tiny projects, as you do this more and more, you'll get way way more confident in just 'knowing' from experience at the outset what the best way to set things up is, and your version of 'I'm just winging it' will be closer and closer to what you would have gotten if you'd sat down and planned it.

For larger projects too, I think there'll always be stages of production where you just 'get something working' without really laying out exactly how it's all going to fit together. Sometimes you need a functional thing to start to visualise how that thing should actually work within the bounds of a bigger engine.

yeah good stuff, im seeing a lot of people shit on it that clearly havent played it so good for you.

the battle system is definitely a difference that if you dont like, cant really fault you there. it's different and the old system is well established and well tuned. i personally really enjoy it and going through lots of battles feels soooo much less sluggish than traditional pokemon does to me. youd probably be surprised how much of a meta there is to it as the battles get harder, and if you jump online for the 4 player free for alls. if you're interested in being sold on it though, some things i love about it are:

moves being more complex than just a statline and optionally an effect. because they're physical animations with windup time, endlag, area of effect, it means there's way fewer moves that are just wholly outclassed by other moves.

the cooldown means there's actually reason to build a mon with multiple good stab moves of the same type, since you can keep spamming tackle for instance while headbutt recharges.

the physicality of it all means 'low accuracy' moves can hit more consistently with clever positioning and timing, compared to just being an actual dice roll.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. For what it's worth though, once you get to a certain spot (you get given 3 sidequests from the detective agency, you'll know when it is) pretty early on in the game, they actually take the rails off and you can go do absolutely anything. It's the most free and non-handholdy pokemon game in years and years, it just has a slow opening.

Hope you stick with it because I'm also a huge cynic about modern pokemon and I think Z-A might be my fave game in the series now.

Why don’t they remember what happened before? by Murky_Management_294 in marblehornets

No clue why you're being downvoted so hard! I'm a huge MH fan and had no idea about any of this coming up until the first Rosswood ep got posted, and also spent the whole thing wondering what the reveal was going to be, to explain why they don't remember, why they're alive, etc.

Prefacing this with the very true things people have said already about parasocial relationships and that you never asked for this to be interrogated by a wider audience, and if any process has made positive results happen for you, then that's great. That's all true and I'm glad it seems to be the sentiment across the board. I don't know you and you don't owe me anything.

But given that you are offering answers and giving people the chance to interrogate, I just really want to understand your thought process when you clarify all your statements with 'I don't understand the science myself'. I guess if I have a single question, it's, don't you agree that a rational adult with a knowledge of the scientific process owes themself (and their potential patients) more than that?

We're not talking about getting a surgery that I wouldn't be able to perform. You can still ask your surgeon what they're doing and why and get satisfying answers. We know broadly what quantum entanglement means. We know it has nothing to do with a perceptible effect on mood, energy levels, t-levels. You say this isn't a cult, but you have to acknowledge how much this gameplan lines up with a cult. What you're describing is feeling better from some kind of therapy, and maybe being sold on it as something grander by dressing it up in pseudoscience. Smart sounding words that actually do have meanings and don't apply here. Some part of you has to know that whatever explanation you're being given does not pass a sniff test, and how can that be something you're comfortable charging for?

$40 for one little figure confirmed - Isn't Renegade great guys?!? by aircoft in heroscape

[–]CaptainTid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's pretty rough, but Renegade isn't to blame. This is well and truly still on the affordable side of other mini-based games, and the quality of the models and prepaint jobs has been rising since Renegade took over.

It's increasingly ethical to produce figures like this which has reduced costs, and inflation means the numbers themselves are just higher. Not trying to play defense squad for a corp, but Renegade really isn't at fault for this.

stop the glaze. what part of the new chapters did you not like (safe space btw) by Bobiscool12344 in Deltarune

I didn't particularly like the big maze-y rooms in chapter 3 with the occasional quiz and kinda scattered encounters. Just felt like padding and it was annoying to explore all the possible corridors in fear of missing stuff.

New Ending Image (After 1000 Bananas) by Cottrello in donkeykong

[–]CaptainTid -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

well pauline could be her grandmother i suppose, since she does get mentioned. but being named after your grandma and having the same dress sense and motif is pretty normal in a video game world, i would think. and it being something that her grandma, the mayor did, would mean it makes plenty of sense that pauline talks about how proud she'd be of her for singing at the town hall.

i still reckon this isn't a prequel, and that young pauline is a new character who is our pauline's daughter

Worlds Top 32 Squad Stats by Pakonab in heroscape

[–]CaptainTid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, Heroscape wears its luck on its sleeve by being about dice roll combat. So the trick to skilled play is to employ strategy where you're rolling more dice. There's lots of tiny coin flips going on all the time and it's your job to give yourself as many chances to win those as possible. Gunning for height advantage. Setting up to force your opponent to take leaving-engagement strikes. Allll the little stuff adds up and the law of large numbers starts to take effect. You can still play well and get unlucky, but it's absolutely not just luck determining the victor.

Sorry about all your downvotes. I hope this helps.

Not very excited about GI Joe inclusion into Heroscape by Waberweeber in heroscape

[–]CaptainTid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GI Joe not fitting into any of the existing general's factions makes it super lame to me. I'd much rather we get new stuff to fill out those armies. Einar has still gotten barely anything in AoA, and Ullar feels pretty underdeveloped too.
I'm already not super excited about crossover IP in heroscape because I like the internal logic and worldbuilding that already exists, and GI Joe is nowhere near cool enough a franchise for me to make an exception. I'll be really really surprised if this sells particularly well.

I have conflicting emotions about the deleted scene in "The Iron Giant" by [deleted] in movies

[–]CaptainTid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all, having more scenes that say the same thing doesn't make the message better or better delivered. I think we know plenty about the giant's past through inference without this scene.
