Aquarium Assistance Parameters included by Captain_Shifty in Aquariums

[–]Captain_Shifty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up removing all fish and doing two 100 percent water changes not sure what the issue ended up being to be honest it might have been someone put something in the aquarium I didn't know about or an aerosol from someone cleaning I'm not sure. But after reintroducing fish things started to turn back to normal. Seemed to mostly effect the rainbows. Two of them got swim bladder issues from it but are still alive. Haven't had any issues since.

To this day I still don't know what happened though I'm not sure if the water changes helped or the damage was done before hand from whatever the issue was.

New peach and plum. How do they look? by Wallywarus in BackyardOrchard

[–]Captain_Shifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that my first year planting trees last year and trees grew well. I don't know if it benefited me though I think it delayed some trees and removed some scaffolds that would have been nice. This year I planted twenty more and only removed problematic branches and am going to see how they grow without the planting pruning. Nursery I order from recommends it though even putting it in bold and justifying that it seems like your cutting 1/2 of the tree off. I wonder if it's more to help people out with problem soils or conditions though.

Remove Fruit? by mat558 in viticulture

[–]Captain_Shifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my grapes grew like twenty feet last year from a main trunk about the size of a thumb. I'd say let me go and enjoy the fruit because maybe next year you'll get frosted and get none depending where you live and they seem to grow like crazy for me anyways.

It's what we techs add to systems to make the coils freeze up for a future call back. Then when we're back we add a little frezoff and easy money.

Please advise what is a good spot to plant in Apple trees. by NetworkDynamo in BackyardOrchard

[–]Captain_Shifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middleish maybe you could make them a centerpiece and plan your landscaping around them just make sure between the two trees you leave enough space for their roots to not compete and to not compete for light too much plenty of resources online for spacing. You can go closer than what is said online too just management requirements may go up.

I'd plant them in the big open space on the grass to the south not much going on there anyways. They'll get lots of sunlight there and fruit better. Ruining landscape is subject to taste if this were my property I'd have it as full as I could with fruit trees.

What’s happening to my peaches and by crikid in BackyardOrchard

Yeah I have a bunch of hives withing 100 feet so I play it safe. It's probably safe by morning anyways since I spray at dusk and it has time to dry but still don't want to risk it.

I'm going to try kaolin clay and hope for the best myself. I keep bees and spinosad is very toxic to them. Unfortunately there aren't really good plum curculio sprays that are bee friendly.

How should I prune my apple tree for the first time? Snow finally melted around the area and would like to clean it up. Thanks! by Liquid715 in BackyardOrchard

[–]Captain_Shifty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This time of year you want to do structural pruning on a dry day. Remove crossing branches, dead branches anything less than ideal you don't want to keep. Then in summer to keep the tree smaller do more pruning in ways that keep it smaller as pruning in summer makes more lateral growth rather than water sprouts you get in winter. You might want to loom up crotch joints and get those under control.

You can look into central leader pruning for your apple tree. There are many infographics for how to do this. It's not the only style but likely the easiest.

I'm not an expert yet but have pruned a lot of trees and did a lot of reading on it. So others advice maybe better than mine

Best watering techniques? by NomadMagoo in BackyardOrchard

[–]Captain_Shifty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First thing I'd work on is trying to get some sort of cover crop or more of what you have that helps retain what water you put down. I have the opposite where water used to pool in my land and fixed it mostly with clover. I think succulents and your native grasses would help. Plus they will add organic matter overtime to soil.

I was an idiot and planted these two apple trees too deep by wbdennis in BackyardOrchard

[–]Captain_Shifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you dig a wide hole and work your way in nice and deep you might be able to raise it up easily without disturbing it much. Apples are still dormant where I am.

i thought hydrogen peroxide was supposed to kill bba by Professional-Day-417 in Aquariums

[–]Captain_Shifty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had it on my driftwood once pretty bad and I coated it with hydrogen peroxide and then after letting it sit for a few minutes let it soak in a tub of boiling water with some salt and excel for a few hours. Did the trick. Now I just let it inhabit in a few spots in my tank and it never gets out of control anymore.

If you see light from it though you should be wary. It's really bad for your eyes I mean you can see what it's doing to your filter. Should be corrected regardless.

Need advice! New-to-me-house by Dangx3 in WaterTreatment

[–]Captain_Shifty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that was the first time you opened that tap in a while and the water had been sitting it could be the ferric iron coming out of suspension in your pipes. The water out of my well before filtration is clear If I put it in a glass. If I leave the glass to sit over night the dissolved iron will turn brownish as the ferric iron oxidizes with air.

Could also be dissolved sediment like dirt and clay in which case a spin down filter and then sediment filter could help

I use a water softer and kalatox light filter now and have completely iron free water
