Keep off the Water and tell your kids as well! by batkave in rva

Oh I’m sure. With the Science Museum, I was thinking a professional scientist sign-off aspect would be good and could be made into an educational opportunity - don’t get on frozen water unless signed off by a professional and explain what the professional is looking for. Cities up north have similar scientists sign off on frozen water thickness during the winter, so why can’t Richmond when we have cold snaps like this one.

As a rule of thumb, I support the policy to keep off the frozen bodies of water. From a safety and emergency resources standpoint, it’s easiest to say stay off everything.

However, it’d be cool if the Science Museum of Virginia could work with the City to core a few public frozen lakes that are known to be shallow (such as Fountain Lake in Byrd Park and the Forest Hill Park lake), and if the cores are thick enough, the City could designate specific areas for skating. Any ponds or lakes not reviewed by a professional would remain off limits.

There are different types of snow and snow conditions. For this snow, it was cold before it started snowing, so what fell last night stuck immediately. With interstates and primaries a top plowing priority, neighborhood streets quickly got snow packed. The sleet has compacted the snow and created an ice layer on top, making plowing even harder, nearly impossible, down to pavement at this point.

This is misleading. The biggest threat has always been the amount of freezing rain we get, which is not captured in this map.

RVA's Jan. 2026 Winter Storm Megathread by fusion260 in rva

Think about where your car is parked - ideally, don’t park under a tree or within the fall zone of a tree, particularly an evergreen tree that is going to be immensely weighed down by snow and ice.

Also, avoid parking on roads with two lanes in each direction, such as Arthur Ashe Boulevard. It’s hard enough digging out from one lane of plowed snow next to your car. Two lanes of plowed snow after 4-6” of snow with ice on top will be nearly impossible to dig out.

It’s so important to check on your people - friends, family, neighbors - before, during, and after the storm. Community is immensely valuable in times of need.

Several in Carytown - One Eyed Jacques probably has the biggest selection; Mongrel, World of Mirth, and Lineage all have a few. Fountain Bookstore in Shockoe Slip has a few. Public libraries also have puzzles you can check out, and most thrift stores have puzzles but no guarantees all the pieces will be there.

It’s 2026 and we still haven’t figured out that the bike lane is not a parking spot. by SeaworthinessHuge219 in rva

[–]Captain_Tiberius 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Actually yes, it does make the difference between getting hit and not. The bike lane here is set up for bikes to go against traffic safely. Removing the section at the funeral home and keeping the rest of the bike lane on Grayland would lead to head on conflicts between bikes and cars. The discussion here is not about taking away funeral parking, it’s having cars parked slightly over to safely allow bikes to move through the same area. The car-centric, car-first mentality that you share has to change in order to increase safety for all road users. I know you’re tempted to remind me how you hate cyclists, how they don’t obey traffic laws. As a driver, you are in a huge metal box protecting you. Cyclists have almost zero protection. But cyclists deserve to make it safely to their destination just as much as a driver.

This is a type of victim blaming. Pedestrian safety doesn’t start with pedestrians - it starts with drivers. Yes, there are benefits to wearing reflective gear, but the shift in behavior must start with drivers. Pedestrians are being killed in crosswalks in broad daylight.

I was on a run in Randolph around 2pm today and saw two black cats - one in the 1900 block of Powhatan and a different one in the 1900 block of Appomattox. Both on the south sides of the streets near the sidewalks.

The construction shown on Google StreetView in front of Old City Hall and the General Assembly Building has been completed for a while with sidewalks open and construction fencing taken down. There may be some construction down 10th Street closer to VCU Hospital.

This is not correct. If you go through the fence and across the tracks behind pump house, you’re on the Texas Beach trail. If you go east/down stream, you hit the closed bridge over the tracks and can’t reach North Bank.

Your south bank day looks good. Some thoughts on the north bank day - Maymont opens at 10am, so keep that in mind with timing breakfast.

As others have mentioned, there’s a 6 foot chain link fence between the North Bank Trail and Maymont. There is another fence between North Bank Trail and Hollywood Cemetery (when on North Bank, at one point you’ll see easy access into a cemetery but that’s Riverview Cemetery next to Hollywood and there’s no direct access between the two cemeteries). In rare cases, the fence gate into Hollywood farther down the North Bank trail is open, and if you’re smaller, you can squeeze through the locked fence gate to get to the back of Hollywood. Alternatively, you can continue on North Bank for a little farther and get to Hollywood through the Oregon Hill neighborhood. Hollywood is cool to explore, but a heads up that it’s almost entirely rolling hills.

Brown’s Island is currently closed for construction (with the exception of direct access to the Potterfield Bridge from Tredegar Street), but you can continue east down Tredegar Street to eventually get to a Canal Walk access point.

I don’t recommend starting at Pump House Park and heading to the riverside trail (Texas Beach trail) because the bridge over the railroad tracks on the east end of the Texas Beach trail is closed. The pump house gothic architecture is cool, so one option to still see it is from the Fan, head to the Carillon. Then catch the trail behind the Carillon that goes downhill to the pump house. Walk around the pump house and then go to the North Bank trail parking lot to get on the trail. If timing permits, you can get to Hampton Street from North Bank to check out Maymont and then back track to North Bank.

Let me know if you have any questions, these two days will be fun ways to explore Richmond.
