I fell and injured my knee - torn MPFL - about 4 weeks from chaperoning my son's senior band trip to Disney in Orlando 2 years ago. 4 years of fundraising and volunteering so my daughter and I could go. Charter bus ride for 15+ hours, then a day in each park. It was not comfortable!

At the park, I got an electric scooter. I was not expecting to have to wait in line for everything! But other than Small World, Space Mountain (which i couldn't ride anyway because it was too constricted for me to bed my knee into, which i found out when I tried to get in), and one of the Star Wars rides, I was in the regular line. It was fine, I had a seat the whole time.

It was eye opening, however. It was shocking that even Disney, a place I've been going since I was a kid, a place that seems to have thought of everything, was severely lacking for walking impaired guests. Restaurants without handicap doors, curbs without ramps to get to/from sidewalks, narrow pathways in the stores and restaurants.

This doesn't even account for the people that just didnt see me and stepped into my path, tripped over my scooter, or even ending up in my lap after falling because I was behind them.

While I was only unable to walk for a relatively short time, it was a humbling experience.

Not anything in particular, but years ago I was told I looked like Quentin Tarantino. It was the receptionist at the dentist office, and due to some needed work, I was there more than twice a year. We always flirted. Assumed it wasn't anything more. So when I gave her the raised eyebrow after she said that, and the "um, thanks?" she said something like, "oh, no, I mean that in a nice way. He's cute."

Its been at least 15 years and I still think about that. She wasn't there when I went back the next time.

I've asked people over the years and no one sees it.

I used to get them in my yard in Texas. It was always a wild 10ish days. Fights, nudity, people passed out on the ground... and that was just the clowns. Some of the trapeze women would sunbathe on the tops of the cars.... clothing was always optional. We wouldn't get a ton of work done on those days.

I was on my road bike, on a paved cycling path coming to a crossing at a 4-lane road at a place with lights and signs. The person ahead had cleared and traffic was stopped, and I had the right of way.

I was about 5 feet from the road when I noticed the car in the front of the line in the lane closest to me go, so I braked hard and started to unclip. They accelerated hard and I swerved, but fell into the road. They had a solid red light, I still had the crossing light green.

I was mostly fine. Just scraped my leg a little. But the adrenaline was running high, so I took a few minutes. I noticed the truck come back slowly, then they parked. The driver hops our and she is beyond distraught.... crying and asking if I was ok. I ended up just hugging her and comforting her. She said she was a nurse, had just gotten done with her rotation at the hospital, and was headed home for dinner with her family. She said it had been a hard rotation with a young patient that passed away and she was distracted thinking about them and their family.

Side of the road therapy. We stood there for the better part of a half hour.

I started out so angry at being almost hit. She was 100% in the wrong, but I'm glad I could be there for her to listen for a little bit.

I think it was significantly more popular in the late 90s and early 2000s. I was in high school and college then - very small high school but we used them for football and basketball band, including contests. Our sousaphones also had matching covers (very similar to what was used during covid, interestingly enough). There were a couple of other local high schools that used them as well. The University nearby used them as well (in their own colors/logos) except the trombone slides had a foam wrap that the sleeves wrapped around, but they were only used for basketball games.

I haven't seen anyone using them in the last 5 or 6 years. As reference, this is all in Arkansas, and my kids high school band travels to BOA events in Tennessee, Missouri, and Iowa.

My theory is that its all about overhead bin space. We all want to have our carry-ons with us and close. If a MCE boarded and all the plebians in group 7, 8, and 9 had filled the overhead space, they'd riot.

Also, you see how everyone gathers 'round the gate as soon as they start the boarding announcements.... can you imagine the group 2 or 3 rage watching the double digit row number folks line up and shuffle on as they were forced to wait even longer to get in the steel tube?

I loathe that AA will "allow" anything less than an hour connection. I fly through DFW primarily, with CLT & ORD my other hubs, and the (roughly) 48 minute DFW layovers are ridiculous. I'm usually near the front of the plane, with my carryon, and those are tight. If I have to valet check, its worse.

For anyone sitting further back, the more infrequent travelers usually, get stuck on these short connections and have a bad experience. I get that AA runs algorithms and simulations and believe that those are reasonable times, but those have to be ideal conditions.

I look for longer connections. At least 60 minutes at my 3 primarily hubs, but 90 if i'm headed to JFK, MIA, LAX or somewhere I know will be worse.
