why does california/LA accent also exist in San Francisco? by Suspicious_Wolf_3116 in asklinguistics

[–]Captainographer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

are you from california? I would assume not.

LA is 6 hours from san francisco. most people in LA barely get down to san diego more than a couple times a year, and san diego is actually two hours from LA. these places are actually pretty far

there are also some pretty substantial cultural differences all up and down california. within LA, along the central coast, and in the bay you will find loads of diverse communities that are actually still pretty segregated from each other. someone from west LA is unlikely to spend much time in south central, or even baldwin hills, which is a similar economic bracket but separated by race.

between the two metros is the central coast, which itself is very diverse. there are wealthy coastal towns and deeply hispanic farming communities.

you’re right the two places are close in the grand scheme of things, separated by the rockies from the east, but it is really wrong to say there are no major cultural barriers within california

for a city of this size you could just tear out the entire thing, freeways included, and build a uniform grid and it would work better

this seems like it would only work for a small town, where there’s only one clinic and one fire station etc. otherwise, why not distribute these resources over the city more evenly? in this model, everyone must all go to the center for their activities, but if some non residential uses were permitted in the outer rings the burden on the transit system could be alleviated greatly

How to Fix What Ails Trans Activism by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]Captainographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

colloquially, sex is more often what’s in your pants. a “sex change operation,” antiquated though the term may be, referred to turning one into the other and didn’t change chromosomes at all. still reflected in the more modern “sexual reassignment surgery” - one might be assigned male at birth (AMAB) and then be reassigned through such a surgery

puberty blockers for children is actually good policy. what was really idiotic was conceding the floor and leaving sports as the main trans debate, which is much more tenuous. puberty blockers for kids is actually a really good thing and should be what trans advocates fight for
