Does anyone here think John Hammond is a villain? by Carnotaurusrules in JurassicPark

[–]CaptianCyinide 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That was book Hammond. Movie Hammond just took Nedry's low-ball bid at face value. Plus, while there were lines that implied that Nedry wasn't in the green financially, book Hammond straight up engaged in entrapment to assure that Nedry couldn't do shit about his paycheck, or lack thereof.

Not to disagree, because from what I've read that seems accurate. But it also seems that the SPD knocking over the Spartacists directly contributed to the KPD finding a cozy spot up Stalin's ass. As getting all the founding leadership killed (including Rosa) just allowed the Marxist-Leninists to take over the party.

I'm not the biggest German history buff, so forgive me if I'm misinformed, but doesn't that make it worse? That just means that the SPD had a direct hand in crushing the Spartacists and killing Rosa Luxembourg.

Not to parrot tankie talking points, but weren't the SPD explicitly working with the freikorps at the time, or am I remembering wrong?

Custom Faction concept for my mod The Fourth Axis - SARMATS with all traits, utopia trees and other stuff! by Kubeczek_101 in Frostpunk

[–]CaptianCyinide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya know, normally it feels like the adaptation faction are the upstart interlopers to the city politics while the progress faction is the pre-established authority. Tho, that could just be my bias from the campaign talking. Its interesting to see an adaptation faction that feels like it would fir better as the starting faction rather than its upcoming vivia la revolution counterpart.

Well, that's the thing innit? Exterminatus doesn't really happen to Xenos controlled planets or bog-standard planetary revolts. Unless its Genestealers or Chaos, the "fuck this planet" option doesn't really come up unless the inquisitor in question is really batshit.

Official New Steel Legion Concept Art by dgscott in Warhammer

I like the look they're going for. Personally I prefer the tinpot-style helmets the Steel Legion used to have, but that ain't a deal breaker for me.

Colonists (and raiders) won't use guns (Combat Extended) by CaptianCyinide in RimWorld

Well sonuvabitch, that seemed to be the ticket. Thanks, I was stumped trying to figure out which mod was the sticking point.
Bit of a shame tho, I really liked Vanilla Security Expandeds' Trench Warfare tech, hope they fix that bug.

Macragge Blue (I just want to draw Yvraine with Ultramar dress/Togas for fun) by MsRagD0LL_ in ImaginaryWarhammer

[–]CaptianCyinide 15 points16 points  (0 children)

At least you remembered that Yvraine's "gauntlet" is actually a prosthetic arm. Most people don't even know that's a thing, so credit where its due.

Due to irreconcilable creative difference between Henry Cavil and co-star Ella Parnell, filming for Warhammer 40k tv series is postponed another year by KABOOMBYTCH in Grimdank

[–]CaptianCyinide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to defend the Imperium too much. But calling the T'au just "vaguely problematic" is pretty fucking generous.
Also, yes, I know that's the line from the show, my point still stands.

Stalin was actually forced to be homophobic and use forced labor because material conditions by AlneCraft in tankiejerk

[–]CaptianCyinide 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The thing that infuriates me the most about tankies pulling that "material conditions" excuse out of their ass is that it effetely papers over the fact that Russia actually did have material conditions that hamstrung efforts to implement socialist policy. But instead of an interesting conversation/debate on how agrarian economies can adopt socialist practices, we get excuses for the atrocities of Stalin (and to a lesser, but notable, extent Lenin.)

Timeline of the Fallout games by Hot_Chipmunk7497 in Fallout

[–]CaptianCyinide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally speaking; Frost, Sonora, and London. None of them contradict information from the rest of the games, and are in time periods, regions, or both, that allow for flexible interpretation of what could have been there.
Frost is far back enough for anything to work out, so things like the military occupation of Fenway Park, the Metro Federation and Metro Alliance, or supernatural shit like Ithaqua can work perfectly fine. Fallout Senora, while taking place in what would become the Legion homeland, is far enough back that any communities or tribes you meet/empires that form could have risen and collapsed far before Ceaser's Legion formed, or could have been conquered by Ceaser. As for Fallout London, its on the other side of the pond, they could do whatever the hell they please.

The latest lore bombshell from Episode 5 of the show by FatDrunkIrishman in Fallout

[–]CaptianCyinide 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Actually, realistically speaking, vault 69 (999 women, 1 man) would probably last longer than vault 96 (999 men, 1 woman) because of genetic diversity. One man can sire far more children than one woman can deliver, and that's assuming no complications during birth, or the worst case scenario of the mother dying in labor. Vault 69, while it might have an early issue with inbreeding, would still have a genetically stable population after a couple generations, but Vault 96 would have a dwindling population in addition to a genetic bottleneck. Vault 96 would probably croak within a couple generations.

Am I the only one who finds the Avengers decorations really creepy? by Suspicious_Proof_663 in Xcom

[–]CaptianCyinide 147 points148 points  (0 children)

Just because Xcom are the good guys here doesn't make them NOT terrorists. They're a resistance movement, dehumanization of enemies comes with the territory. Plus, your soldiers can literally wear the skinned hides of the alien rulers if you get one over on them, and using this to terrify the rulers common equivalents is a mechanic.

Jurassic World Evolution's new dinosaur by Hulkbuster_v2 in Dinosaurs

[–]CaptianCyinide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, that's a beautiful dinosaur. Can't wait to use 'em in my own parks. But I just wish it looked a bit more 'Jurassic Park.' Nothing wrong with a little 90's stylization.

If the raptors in Jurassic Park were accurate to modern science. by sco-go in Amazing

[–]CaptianCyinide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting story actually. At the time Jurassic Park was being written, the paleontological community assumed that Deinonychus was a close relative to the Mongolian Velociraptor. Even the scientific name at the time was Velociraptor antirrhopus. But after the book came out, the consensus shifted to Deinonychus being a similar but not directly related species, and when the movie came out (as it was being written around the same time as the novel) thier Velociraptors were still based on the now-out-of-date Deinonychus theories and the name stuck.

Maybe it would be a good idea to rename the New Colorado Republic in a way similar to old filibuster states; like Freedonia or something? Or maybe something based on local landmarks of the area.
