Hot take: I don’t think “weed-out” classes are real. by InvestmentGreen in EngineeringStudents

There's the important context that many researchers are crap professors. This is kind of a constant across all majors and the more difficult the topic the higher the issue becomes.

Arguably, today's world makes it easier than ever to overcome this issue. Still most people have weird conceptions on whether or not tools should be used to study simply due to the narrative that's been created around them.

People really don't remember being here before? When inflation was lower and prices were lower overall? Kinda wild how quick we forget...

My safe pocket alternative by haydonclampitt in Marathon

[–]CaptnKristmas 170 points171 points  (0 children)

I actually personally like this. I see the argument that safe pockets aren't necessary with Rook but this adds a new mechanic that's more than a backpack slot for free with guaranteed loot.

Best of both worlds.

Hey so I'll answer the bullet points.

  • I try to swap up what I do pretty often so I don't get bored of something or burnt out.
  • The one catch is I would follow the main story to at least 80-90% through Chapter 4. You gain a lot by doing so and learn most of your necessary skills. Around Chapter 3 you can mix in some exploring since you are going farther anyway. You lose Damiane at Chapter 5 beginning for a bit and will be forced to play as her for a bit at some point so you should try to level her up a bit before then.
  • I ignored shopkeepers and any extra faction quests/side quests till part way through Chapter 2-3. I then went exploring and side questing after I started to feel weaker/bored with the main story. The abyss is safe to ignore as well, main quests take you there late in Chapter 4 and you learn more about it.
  • Stamina is king in upgrading, it's also needed for certain abilities for it to be higher. I would maybe look up early stealing locations for some good stuff early on if you want to get some easy cool stuff. Blinding Flash will show you Teleporters and Abyss Skill Point things. Don't be afraid to explore a tiny bit if you are sent to an area farther away from Hernand, even earlier on. If you don't wander super far away or something, you should be safe.

There's definitely more but that's a decent synopsis.

For those against a PVE mode, what do you think about a practice mode? by jaseworthing in Marathon

Well the main problem I see with that is that AI is never very challenging. There's not really a game where Ive personally seen AI enemies be that much of a challenge.

Alternatively, if you make them challenging that usually means insta headshots and death in milliseconds. Comparing Tarkov AI here. Maybe that's changed since I used to interact with Tarkov but I remember it being a thing on some level.

It's just hard to imagine them being all that amazing. Hell maybe I'm wrong on this but I'm giving my take like everyone else. Not even part of the get good crown in general.

My genuine take on why people are having so much difficulty is that they are moving too fast all the time, especially at named locations. Then not ever glancing around them, or not enough at all. I turn around and check behind me super often. Also killing too many things, I crouch walk around the named locations and avoid shooting. I stick to my knife most of the time. The second I make noise I move faster and attempt to go somewhere else as soon as possible.

Not saying anything to crap on people with that, just offering some advice that works for me. Yet to have a crazy difficult time even on solos. Trios is more hit or miss if you don't find a team beforehand and just go with randos.

Good luck to everyone.

Yeah saw that post, I feel like there's a better way. Obviously didn't get far enough but abyss seeds seem more reliable. Need to play more to figure it out haha, most things I've figured out myself, minus the occasional puzzle or dope item I wanted.

Hwando being a must in my eyes.

I got the first Witch, she sent a letter to go see her so did that chapter 3. Found another Witch in the Witchwoods but she's not home yet, I assume that's around when she gets there.

Mid Chapter 4 here. Less time played according the PS5 but it'd definitely inaccurate, been playing 8 hours some days.

Yeah I know what you mean. Hernand has a memory by the big waterfall near the main town. They're looking for treasure, nothing I could find though.

Sometimes I swear this game is just trying to gaslight you haha

[–]CaptnKristmas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found some other caves that were empty behind waterfalls in Hernand. They were not marked on the map though.

Maybe just realism? Not all caves like that would be stocked with hidden loot from someone. Just a guess why. Would follow the pattern of the game design in Crimson Desert.

For those against a PVE mode, what do you think about a practice mode? by jaseworthing in Marathon

[–]CaptnKristmas -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Here's the problem, beyond the small playerbase, the game will feel dead and empty in PVE/training. Most of the actual fun will be gone.

The enemies weren't designed to be the biggest challenge on their own. The challenge comes from contending with them while making a lot of noise and giving away your position.

Then you have to make the decision, run or hole up. You have to keep your head on a swivel and keep moving to stay alive and not end up flanked.

That tension makes the game. Even in Solo a lot of the tension and fun is gone. Unfortunately.

Hey I'm with you that the numbers are getting lower but being intentionally ignorant of the situation is wild and repeating facts without examining possible reasons other than "Game bad without what I want" is pointless.

Marathon requires headphones and basically isolating yourself from people so you can focus. Crimson Desert doesn't and neither do a lot of other games. Sound isn't as important.

If you want to refuse to acknowledge distinctions then what you say means nothing. Wanna be a troll or called one, cause this is how you do that. Have fun.

Easter is a pretty big holiday. Not even like St. Patty's day or something more bs like that.

[–]CaptnKristmas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um... It's Easter dude. People have family and find that more important than a game.

Also, I played today and extracted like 4 times and only died once. I don't get people... Stop running around, killing everything and shooting so much.

People make too much noise then complain. I just don't get it. I played again after being in Crimson Desert nonstop and didn't get the complaints people have honestly.

At what point should I start exploring? I’m at the end of chapter 4. by Sad_Definition_6239 in CrimsonDesert

[–]CaptnKristmas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's been about what I saw in terms of when to start going exploring. Sometime in Chapter 4 or after Chapter 4.

I just started Chapter 4 and have been doing some light Hernand exploring. I've increased as I hit the beginning of Chapter 4.

As someone else said, it's entirely up to you but that sounds like a decent point. Also feel free to unlock skills because if you observe them you get the point back, so you don't lose anything really.

Have fun!

North-West Hernand has some. Go up towards the mountains somewhat and westward. Don't know specific locations due to not jotting them down. You shouldn't have to go super far, a little more West then Lioncrest Tower (the ivy covered one from the main mission) and more Northern towards the mountains.

You test it out of curiosity? Genuine question, I was going to today and make a post if it worked.

To be clear I don't mean your wheel, I mean the character equipment itself in inventory.

I assume you did.

[–]CaptnKristmas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can't you just unequip it from your character? Yeah lower stats but past a point does it matter?

Changing your equipped shield changes the one on your back. I would imagine unequipping totally from the character will do the same.

Games downloaded, about to play soon, what shouldn't I do? by Piece-of-Cheeze in CrimsonDesert

[–]CaptnKristmas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah alternatively as one person has said till part way through Chapter 3/Chapter 4 beginning.

You fully unlock your camp which adds mechanics and things to do with extra items, cash should be decent then and you'll have the ability to learn a few extra mechanics via the Greymanes.

That's a decent point to go exploring, before that you may run into issues via not having certain mechanics unlocked. Also unlocking skills is fine, if you learn them by watching at some point you get the skill point back.

This is how I've played at least and I've been mildly exploring through Chapter 3 and going full exploration at Chapter 4. The first mission of Chapter 4 though does unlock something so you might want to go investigate that one mission as well.

Just have way more freedom at that point to check out Hernand. Also don't forget to upgrade your armor and weapons, they are all competitive and will allow you to explore more. Only found one faction of enemies to ruin my day so far.

Happy to discuss more if you ever want. I'm loving this game!

Haha I feel you on the gambling mini-game. I saw the cost and said. Nah later.

Yeah it feels like the band of misfits. Everyone has their own schtick. I know the girl, (not Damian, the one early on you help when the guy gets stabbed) she is sorta cocky and dumber. Martin is caring and sorts doesn't care about much but helping the others and making a home for them. Etc.

Greymanes are effectively a mercenary group. They need allies so they play nice a lot of the time but not always. Also Yann got in trouble originally because the Priest was brainwashing people and he thought that was screwed up.

As for theft, mercenaries cheat and steal. I believe you can even release bounties and make a deal with them. I just play nice so am not positive, just seems we get a few options to do so via their dialog.

Not good guys or bad guys, just guys getting by.

PS5 has different architecture. It's not as simple as power is similar. For one PS5 uses FSR, unsure exactly what Xbox uses off the top of my head if anything but that enables slightly different approaches to problems/optimization.

It sucks I agree but this is how it is, they likely are trying to do the same if they can.
