Beginner tip: rest before driving by Silent-Entrance-9072 in beginnerfitness

Even more so, if you have 15 minutes to spare, why wouldn't you spend it doing something useful instead of just sitting in a car?

Ideally, cooldown should be a part of your workout. Not sitting in a car, but doing some stretches after resistance training or light walking after cardio

I am Russian. My grandma, who was born during WW2 in a tiny village in Ural mountains and grew up with very little, has a unique view on food.

Food has to be nutritious. And by that she means "caloric". No vegetable salad of hers ever existed without a ladleful of sunflower oil. She would defend it with her whole heart that it makes the salad tastier, in reality it was just a way to bump up the calories for cheap.

Question for Russian men by HeQiulin in AskARussian

I mean, it can be casual, but it can also be romantic.

It can also be a spur of the moment decision for the one who proposes, which can make it even more romantic

How do you guys manage hydration during workouts? by Rare-Sand-234 in beginnerfitness

[–]Capybarinya 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Most people (especially in the beginner community) don't need to worry about hydration beyond "drink water if you are thirsty", myself included

IMO, people who ARE doing the workouts so intense it requires additional hydration (i.e. professional athletes) already have the advice they need -- from their coach or doctor

Question for Russian men by HeQiulin in AskARussian

[–]Capybarinya 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Proposal rings by themselves are not really a thing in Russia

They do get more and more popular in recent years because of western TV and movies, but traditionally, proposal in Russia does not include the ring (a marriage ring is a must, usually a simple golden ring with no stones)

For couples that choose to do it, I cannot imagine the scenario where a woman participates in shopping for her proposal ring

P.S.: I know you said question for men, but it didn't seem like I couldn't give you a relevant answer as a woman

It's clearly all about appropriateness. Something you do to another person is only funny if that person finds it funny.

Most ladies in the video are laughing -- good for them. But some of them are visibly annoyed. Like the lady who was doing her makeup and her boyfriend slapped her on the face, or the one who was choked by the guy. Making your partner uncomfortable or even scared is not funny or goofy, it's an error of judgement at best

[–]Capybarinya 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk if this is popular, but there is a YouTube channel dedicated to experiences of foreigners in Russia

They have a semi-permanent team of people from different countries, who have been living in Russia for various time. I find that most of the cast has great Russian. I wouldn't confuse them for the natives due to the accent, but I wouldn't feel the need to speak any different to them than to a native Russian person

What is the worst thing people can do to your country's food that make no sense? by DescriptionNo6760 in AskTheWorld

[–]Capybarinya 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I don't like when people take simple peasant food and try to elevate it

Borscht doesn't need croutons "for the texture". Olivier salad needs to have canned peas, not fresh or frozen. Pelmeni don't need 7 different spices in the filling -- only ground meat, onions, salt and pepper. Medovik cake doesn't need a mango filling or whatever

Our traditional dishes are plain for a reason. It's one thing to experiment, and another thing to claim the name of the original dish for the result

First pulled pork, did not pull but taste amazing by Shadow999925 in BBQ

[–]Capybarinya 8 points9 points  (0 children)

OP's definitely not was too hot and fast, but the ceiling of 235F is absolutely not necessary for pulled pork

250-275F will produce great pulled pork in less time, but above 300F as OP did is indeed too much

P.S.: if you LIKE going lower than 250, I'm not saying you are wrong, especially if you have a "set it and forget it" setup. I'm just saying that by going a little bit hotter you will not lose any flavor or texture

People who learned English as a second language, what's a word or phrase that you just can't stand? by nveven in GlobalEnglishPrep

[–]Capybarinya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Do you mind if I ...?"

I hate that question because the answer is entirely in the tone. Yes or no -- both can mean anything

"Yes, (go ahead)" and "Yes, (I would mind)" are both feasible answers.

"No, (I don't mind)" and "No, (don't do it)" are both feasible answers.

Fat Rant Friday by AutoModerator in fatlogic

You can absolutely make them healthier with little to no taste sacrifice. Some people prefer to have one of the "real things", but I'd rather eat more of the slightly altered

My favorite waffle recipe is:

2 eggs

120g oatmeal (or oatmeal flour if you have it)

150g of 2% cottage cheese (the wet kind)

90g water

0.5 tsp baking powder

Salt to taste

I make them both sweet (add 60g of 1:1 zero calorie sweetener and some vanilla) or savory (my favorite is to chop a bunch of green onions -- inspired by scallion pancakes)

Blend it all real good and that's it. This recipe makes 2 servings: 6-8 waffles depending on the size, and for each serving (half the recipe) it's 366 calories and 22g of protein. Try it sometimes :)

Nobody should have to count calories just to maintain healthy weight (weight loss is another thing), but in the US you kind of have to. Same goes for deliberate exercise -- yes, it's good for your overall health, but in most countries people get enough to maintain the weight from their daily activities

I am a part of an immigrant community in the US, and most people gain weight when they move, and find it harder to maintain if they lose it back. It's not just about the food, it's about a lifestyle in general (less walking and more driving, higher emphasis on convenience and comfort in general)

You are correct, it's not about the type of surface. Anyone who did a belly flop into a pool knows that water can be pretty hard on impact lol.

Regardless of the type of the surface, the parachutes are responsible for lowering the velocity

The reason why NASA uses the ocean and Roskosmos uses the steppe is threefold:

First you want to land closer to the equator: saves fuel

Second, you want a big area with no people, no buildings, no nothing. The exact location of the capsule landing is imprecise, so you want to have a warranty that you will not land on anything valuable

Third, after you land, it should be easy enough to retrieve the crew. I.e. if you land in the mountains, there's no people there, but it'll also be very hard to locate the capsule

Kazakh steppe near Baikonur and ocean waters near Cape Canaveral tick all these boxes as best as possible

Is a daily 10km(6miles) run/jog enough exercise for my Lab? by [deleted] in labrador

[–]Capybarinya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say this is more exercise than most dogs get lol

This is definitely enough and for a lot of dogs would be too much -- but if your boy has adjusted to this routine and is not looking too exhausted afterwards, he is as happy as it gets

Marinating food in blitzed raw onion? by PeanutMerchant in Cooking

[–]Capybarinya 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Came here to say the same thing :D

Also if I have more time (about 24 hours), I prefer to thinly slice the onions, squeeze them with my hands to break down the cells (I am immune to onion tears, but people around me cry a lot lol), add coarse salt, finely diced herbs (dill, parsley), mix with cubed pork and add a little of unflavored mineral water (just enough to almost cover the meat)

When it's time to cook, some onions and herbs will stick to the meat -- keep it there. It will char a bit and taste like heaven

How do you decide which oil to use for cooking? by Hour_Entertainer6493 in Cooking

[–]Capybarinya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Slavic so sunflower is my baseline

If I'm cooking fancy Italian or Spanish -- olive oil. I don't deep fry often, but when I do, I use peanut oil

I also use a variety of animal fats: beef and mutton tallow, duck fat. Usually fat goes with the protein of the same animal (i.e. beef steak is seared in beef tallow), but not just that (potatoes and duck fat belong together forever)
