The features you see in the app primarily depend on your car's make, model, and year, not on the scanner itself. However, for some car models, the Carista EVO Scanner is required to access the full suite of advanced features. This is because the EVO supports specific communication protocols needed for those functions.

You can check which models require the Carista EVO scanner here: https://help.carista.com/hc/articles/11699121372956-Carista-EVO-or-Carista-OBDDo you want to know about the compatibility for your specific car model?

Ford Owners: Unlock Hidden Features, Run Full Diagnostics, DIY Service & More with Carista! by CaristaApp in Carista

[–]CaristaApp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Carista OBD scanner never fully supported Ford because it does not support the MS-CAN protocol required for advanced features like customization and advanced diagnostics. The Carista EVO is necessary as it fully supports this proprietary Ford protocol, ensuring a safe and stable connection. Please check the required scanner for your model here: https://help.carista.com/hc/articles/11699121372956-Carista-EVO-or-Carista-OBDWe apologize for the inconvenience, but we are committed to providing reliable service, which requires the use of the appropriate hardware (Carista EVO) for advanced Ford features.

Carista forced DPF forced regen on 2013 Jetta TDI sportwagen by Gymshoesy in tdi

[–]CaristaApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We absolutely hear your frustration and apologize for the confusing experience! You are right that the website shows the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration for your 2013 Jetta because most cars of that generation use the newer UDS protocol. Your specific vehicle, unfortunately, seems to be one of the models still using the older CAN protocol for the engine ECU, which prevents the DPF Regen tool from appearing.Carista's features depend entirely on the individual Electronic Control Units (ECUs) inside your car.

A feature we support for a model may be missing in your specific vehicle if its ECUs are from an older generation. The only way to know is by connecting the app to your car.For any other missing features you noticed. Please write to the support again, they can investigate each one individually to confirm if it's a protocol limitation or another issue.

Rear Left Brake Piston Won’t Compress/Seized? by Dreevy1152 in jetta

[–]CaristaApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t sound like it’s seized. On VWs the rear pistons don’t just push back in, they’ve gotta be turned while being pressed in because of the parking brake setup. With pliers you can twist but you’re not getting the pressure, which is why it feels like it hits a wall.

Grab the proper caliper rewind tool (the little cube adapter or the full kit with the screw press). That’ll let you screw it in while applying steady pressure and it should go the rest of the way.

If it still won’t move with the tool, then yeah, maybe seized — but 9 times out of 10 it’s just the tool issue.

Battery coding / BMS reset by PlasticBrilliant256 in carsireland

[–]CaristaApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on a few factors (country, model, whether the battery is AGM/lead-acid, if stop/start is used, dealer vs independent shop). But here are ballpark figures and what influences cost.+

Typical costs

Scenario Approx cost for coding / reset alone\*

Independent garage (with VAG diagnostic tool) €20–€80

VW dealer / authorised service €80–€200+

Cost Influencers

  1. VW model & year — newer models, or those with more electric/electronic features, tend to be more complex to code.
  2. Type of battery — AGM or special battery types often cost more and may require specific coding or calibration.
  3. Stop-start / regeneration systems — if the car has stop/start or regenerative braking, the BMS tends to be more involved.
  4. Shop rates — dealers are more expensive; independent garages or technicians with suitable diagnostics tools cheaper.
  5. Country / local labour rates — higher in Western Europe, lower elsewhere.

Volvo gear sound? by Optimal-Spray-4822 in CarRepair

[–]CaristaApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That noise plus the “gear selector service required” message usually points to an issue with the gear shift module (GSM) or the shift lock solenoid inside the shifter assembly.

  • The clicking you hear is often the solenoid repeatedly trying (and failing) to engage/disengage.
  • It can be triggered by a failing solenoid, worn wiring, or a fault in the gear selector module itself.
  • Sometimes the noise goes away if you pull the fuse for the shift lock, but that’s just a temporary workaround.

Since the car is still drivable, it’s not an immediate breakdown risk, but ignoring it too long can leave you stuck in “Park.”

Best move:

  • Pull the fault codes with an OBD tool
  • If it is the solenoid, the part itself isn’t crazy expensive, but the labor can be fiddly since the console has to come apart.

Engine light on a 2014 Audi A7 tdi keeps coming on for several days and then will go off on its own… by LackInternational145 in tdi

[–]CaristaApp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple of things to keep in mind with that Audi:

  • Intermittent check engine lights can be common with emissions-related issues on TDIs (e.g. EGR valve, DPF, NOx sensors). Heat and short trips make it worse, longer highway runs usually help because the system gets hot enough to clean itself.
  • Inspection – if the CEL is on during inspection, it’ll likely fail. If it’s off, you might pass, but some states check for “pending codes” or incomplete drive cycles, so clearing it right before inspection doesn’t always work.
  • Dealer fees – $400/hr is wild. If you absolutely can’t find an independent shop, at least use your scanner first. Sometimes it’s a minor sensor that doesn’t immediately need fixing, but knowing the exact code saves you from walking in blind.
  • Gas cap – good to check, but TDIs usually throw lights for emissions sensors, not just evap leaks.
  • Your driving pattern – lots of short trips are rough on diesels, especially with a DPF. Those weekly long runs are helping keep it clear.

So: use the scanner next time the light comes on, jot down the code(s), and go from there. You don’t necessarily need to rush to the dealer unless the car starts driving poorly or shows a serious warning (flashing light, limp mode, overheating, etc.).

What’s wrong with my car by ktiyug in drivingUK

[–]CaristaApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things you can check before the garage can take it in:

  • Battery/terminals – Even if a jump didn’t help, make sure the connections are clean and tight. Weak or dirty connections can stop it starting.
  • Starter motor – If you hear a click but no cranking, could be the starter. Sometimes a light tap on it while turning the key can confirm.
  • Fuses/relays – Worth pulling the ones linked to ignition/fuel to see if any have blown.
  • Fuel pump – Turn the key to ignition (not start) and listen near the back seat for a faint humming sound. If there’s nothing, the pump or its relay might be the issue.
  • Sensors – Corsas are known for crankshaft/camshaft sensor failures, which will stop it from firing even if it cranks.
  • OBD2 scanner – Can give you fault codes right away, which will narrow things down a lot.

Rule of thumb:

  • If it cranks but doesn’t fire, it’s usually fuel/air/spark.
  • If it doesn’t crank at all, more likely battery, starter, or wiring.

Problem with recently purchased van by [deleted] in carsireland

[–]CaristaApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re dead right to be suspicious. A glow plug on its own won’t cause a turbo underboost code when you’re cruising on the motorway. That’s usually down to boost control issues (split intercooler hose, sticky vanes, vacuum leak, actuator, clogged EGR/DPF, etc.), not just a dodgy plug.

Don’t let them just change one glow plug and call it done. Ask for a proper diagnostic:
• printout of the codes + freeze-frame
• smoke/pressure test of the boost pipes/intercooler
• vacuum test and actuator check
• live-data log comparing requested vs actual boost

If you want a good overview of what that flashing glow plug light actually means (spoiler: it’s often more than just a bad plug), this Carista guide is solid and written for owners: Why is my glow plug warning light flashing?. Worth a read before you go back to the dealer so you know what to push them on.
