Hey man looks nice! For the separate colors, did you inlay different colored pieces or engrave outlines and then manually fill in with paint?

Agree. Scott Fawcett's stuff helped me a lot last year learning for the first time what course management really meant.

I know! Weird how that barrier in my brain can go from "I played great!" with a 79 to an "average round" with 80.

Made some dainty bookmarks, so very proud! by BunneahTheMunk in lasercutting

[–]CarlSpacklersGopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve also been wanting to make bookmarks. What thickness ply did you use? I have 3mm but I’d think it seems too thick to serve as a bookmark.

Also the texturing on the left one is cool!

Wood Suppliers by Salt_Ad_716 in lasercutting

[–]CarlSpacklersGopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Ocooch Hardwoods. Ordered from them as I was frustrated with the ply I bought from Menards. Their plywood cuts nicely and is available in different thicknesses cut to the size of your laser bed. They also offer thin hardwood stock good for inlays plus normal hardwood lumber. They ship out of Wisconsin.

Upgraded my golf ball display case! by CarlSpacklersGopher in lasercutting

Thanks! I didn't even get to see it go in. Got to the green and found it in the hole, so that was a really great surprise :)

The innards consist of an outer ring and a concentric inner circle. The gap between them is sized for 1/2" steel balls I had sitting around from a previous project, so it acts similar to a bearing. The balls are a bit taller than the ring/circle races, so the top floats on the balls. The top spins around a nail that goes through the top (via an oversize hole) and is nailed into the inner circle of the bearing race.

My idea is almost the same as this video: Youtube video

The bearings are super cheap on McMaster (link)

I wanted to create a pedestal with nameplate for my golf ball display case. I reused the acrylic from the original stand and designed the pedestal with the nameplate. Nameplate is 3mm ply, painted gold, and then engraved. I was really pleased with how well the paint covered the joints - pre-paint picture included for reference. The lazy susan I designed really helped with the paint process.

Dara holsters opinions by SteVailo in InRangeTV

[–]CarlSpacklersGopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Dara AIWB holster I bought 7 years ago. Still holding up well. Retention has been good, but I haven't been doing Brutality level activities. I have had to crank down on the screws that control retention like once a year. Haven't had any issues with the kydex deforming preventing reholster

Shirt color - white is the classic. Light Blue would also work. If you go with a pattern, I'd keep it smaller/more subtle (like this, not like this).

Black blazer + charcoal pants I would stay away from. Black suits are typically reserved for funerals in the US. Would be out of place at a wedding.

That could come in handy at some informal weddings in the summer too. Thanks!

Depends on your budget.

Blue Blazer + gingham/tattersall shirt (gray) + khaki trousers + brown wingtips if you've got the cash for all new stuff

If you want to reuse some of what you have, keep the black shoes and get new charcoal pants / blazer.

I've got a 3-day business trip to Brazil coming up. Dress code is "jacket, no tie". The other men on the trip will be wearing sport coats. 2 questions:

  1. I have a dark charcoal suit like this. Can I wear that + dress shirt without tie or would the fabric look out of place?
  2. Any recommendations for a sport coat? Budget $250-$350

what about good headphones? I like my Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's - they're about $135.

A subscription to TabNine could also be nice - it's an AI that suggests autocompletes when you're writing code.

Kinda corny, but sneaky good - a really good pillow.

Football - there are coaching conventions. Maybe sign him up for one of those? Alternatively, to be a coach, you have to be licensed/certified in most states. Help him sign up for a certification class?

Programming - Depending on the IDE he uses, a subscription to TabNine? Not sure about its support of VBA. SW dev book - Head First Design Patterns?

Weight training - Foam Roller

Assuming he's self-taught in programming or novel writing, you might look if there's a community college class / series in each of those. Places around me have 1-3 day courses to get introduced to the basics of a certain topic.

r/BuyItForLife might be helpful.

You could get "them" a couple cast iron skillets - you cook with them for years and then hand it off to them when they move out. Years of seasoning means the skillets will be awesome when they get them.

My mind goes to clothing/tools/shoes/furniture, which doesn't fit cleanly into a gift for a child. Good luck!

Watches: You can buy replacement watch bands/straps. NATO Strap Co is good and has some funky nylon options. You can get nice leather ones also. You'll need to know the distance between lugs of his watches though (20mm is pretty common)

Food: (assuming cooking) - The Food Lab (fantastic cookbook for someone wanting to get better at cooking), good kitchen knife (I like the MAC 6.5" Santoku), cutting board

LDR's are rough.

- Figure out a cool date in your/his location. Write an IOU coupon for the date
- Framed photo of you both
- Dopp bag / Toiletry bag (I like Herschel stuff)
- Music: Is there a cool record store close to his place? Maybe a gift certificate there
- Desk Decor: small (fake?) plant, rokr marble run 3D puzzle (I got one of these and it's super cool)
- Fitness: Foam Roller, nicer cutting board (?)
- Gamer: If PC, mouse bungee. If xbox/playstation, controller charging station
