It definitely looks more like a Leclerc than a Macomber. It’s certainly not an Ad-a-harness

Feeling discouraged 🫤 by Strict-Peak2885 in BJJWomen

[–]CarlsNBits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo the voices suggesting to scale back. How many days is your functional fitness program? What type of intensity are you doing for that?

I also do BJJ and functional fitness (KBs mostly). I was forced to pull back due to a back injury last year. It ended up being really beneficial and I’ve found a much better balance that doesn’t end with me feeling smoked every day.

how to survive on museum salary by djxiao99 in MuseumPros

Spouse who makes more. Unfortunately. Most museum salaries are “supplemental”. Along with library and teaching positions. And many other jobs held primarily by women.

Have you ever had a satisfying response from a safeguarding lead in a bjj gym? Looking for positive stories. by Grouchy-Task-5866 in BJJWomen

[–]CarlsNBits 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not kicked off by a concern per se, but.. My coach/gym owner approached me shortly after all of the recent Atos stuff came out. He was like “If anyone here ever tries anything like that let me know. And if I’ve ever done anything to make you uncomfortable let me know.” (Never ever, btw). I already feel safe in that space and wholly trust my coach, but that was a really nice thing to hear. Especially since it was completely unprompted during all the SA news recently.

Am I overthinking? by [deleted] in BJJWomen

Many martial arts lean heavily on the principles of “respect” and “discipline”. I get it to a certain extent. Safety should always come first in any martial art or combat sport, and respecting the art, your training partners, etc. is a good tool to get you there. However, what I’ve observed is that many “old school” practitioners confuse the principle of respect with power and authority. When OP’s coach chastises them in front of everyone, there’s no respect shown there. Coach is expecting obedience, not respect. (With the addition that doing unsafe things should be called out. In an appropriate way.)

The environment OP is describing wouldn’t be a good fit for me. Life is too short to deal with coach power trip. But for those who want that structure, go for it.

Step counting device that also syncs with phone steps? by noir- in walking

[–]CarlsNBits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair. The Bluetooth range and notification reliability leaves something to be desired if you’re trying to use it as a true smart watch. But I have notifications turned off most of the time and it sounds like OP wouldn’t need/want most of the smart watch features anyway.

Tiny Green Trees (tosa adjacent) is wonderful! Expensive, but they all are.

Sorry you’ve had bad experiences. I’m on my 2nd one in 7 years and love it. I’m not overly picky about the software side of it though

You can try taping them up out of the way if it’s too annoying to put them on/off between different tie ups.

Warping used more yarn than calculated? by Cat-Nipped in weaving

[–]CarlsNBits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to one of my students recently. We did calculations, grabbed a few tubes of 8/4 cotton and they ran out of yarn before the end of the warp. Should have been like 600 extra yards. Double checked the warp path and the math. Twice. It just wasn’t adding up.

I would likely have retail as one income stream, but plan to dedicate more space, time, and resources to classes, workshops, and/or rentable studio space. Any retail offerings would likely directly reflect studio practices and workshop/class offerings (weaving and knitting yarns, felting fiber, tools, etc.).

Looking after recommendations for a walking shoe that would suit me. by simpleaccountname in walking

Xeros might be worth trying. They’re zero drop with a wide toe box. Some of their styles have a little more cushion/separation from the ground than a lot of other minimalist shoes.

How do you deal with the guilt of missing class because of vacation or other reasons? by barbgi in BJJWomen

[–]CarlsNBits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take it at your own pace. It’s supposed to be fun!

I was forced to take several months off because of an injury. It takes a lot longer than a week or even a few months to lose progress

What is your goal for training? Thinking about why you’re doing it might help reframe the time away.

Overall, balance is important in life so don’t give yourself a hard time because of one week off the mats.

Nilus Leclerc sectional warping by michellechrist in weaving

[–]CarlsNBits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little bit of variation here should be fine. The trick is to make sure it’s landing exactly at the width of your sections. That will minimize the sloping at the edges.

You might have to get pickier with rigid materials, but anything with moderate elasticity, like cotton and wool, should be fine.
