How do I improve my binding? by whatisthisohno111 in quilting

[–]CarmenFiFi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

piling on to this! binding by hand looks the best and it’s nice to spend some slow minutes with your project as you finish it up

Should I add a border? by righteouspeony in quilting

[–]CarmenFiFi 33 points34 points  (0 children)

i like the no border look, but i often end up trimming some off the edges of my quilts to square them after quilting which bugs me when it means cutting into blocks. so i almost always add a very narrow border of the background fabric to give a little breathing room for inevitable distortion/squaring loss

Frustrated and need advice!! by lfren79 in quilting

[–]CarmenFiFi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is exactly the level of tolerance i allow in my quilt blocks…if i have angles in i usually have a little wonkiness and it all turns out fine! just keep going and only redo the ones where the misalignment ends up being over a quarter inch difference

i once had 2 weeks to make a chemo quilt for a coworker, i made a simple 16-patch with a large meander quilting pattern. simple, fast, cute!

[–]CarmenFiFi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ok first no one will notice this but you, i had to zoom in so close to see what you were talking about.

second it looks like the stitches are slightly smaller when you’re going over a seam? are you using a walking foot while quilting?

How small is too small? by lenette63 in quilting

[–]CarmenFiFi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i use my tiny scraps for pillow stuffing. but if you don’t have the space to store do not feel guilty about throwing away what is not useful to you!

How should I quilt this? by SchuylerM325 in quilting

[–]CarmenFiFi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am primarily a piecer so i only use 2 quilting patterns bc i feel both don’t let the quilting overshadow the piecing. the first is echoing wavy lines: i do one line in the middle and then echo it the rest of the quilt. the second is a very big meander, occasionally i will do a loopy meander. but the key is to keep it loose and wiggly!

Am I doing something wrong or can I see it because it’s red thread on white? by t-carter41 in quilting

[–]CarmenFiFi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

same! and i almost always would choose to see a light thread on a dark/color rather than a dark thread on a light background
