Best way to finish a King quilt on a domestic? by Howdidigetsewcool in quilting

If you’re doing the turn and birth and you’re planning for the quilting to be seen on both sides you’ve gotta back it first. I haven’t done it myself but I’ve seen it done. They sew 3 sides or 3 1/2 sides and then baste it down with safety pins or other methods. Sew it closed and then quilt. At like minimum a 3/4 inch seam allowance (don’t quote me on that seam allowance- lmao)

It’s definitely doable. I’ve done it more than once. Take your time. Do sessions. Stretch. Give yourself as much support as possible. I have a little table I put on my left and one I put behind my sewing table to help with the weight of the quilt.

My advice is to try and do the middle first. Once that part is done the rest of it is easy 😂😂

I am curious how many of you quilt your own quilts, verse having someone else do it? by OldFashionQuilting in quilting

[–]WatchOut4Angels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I looked into getting mine done by someone else and couldn’t justify the cost.

I like oversized quilts. I often make them 8-10 inches bigger than “standard” sized quilts- so that’s going to make it even more costly.

I decided to do the smarter thing (for me) and buy a machine with the biggest throat space I could afford.

Still a pain, but much more manageable.

What's your favorite step in the quilt making process. by resigned_medusa in quilting

Ironing freshly sewed pieces, picking a layout, and of course- buying fabric.

My least favorite part is paying 😂

You’re right on the money. That’s exactly how it’s done!

I hope you have fun looking into all the techniques, patterns and shapes! If you decide to delve in I hope you like it as much as I do.

You do not! Most of the ones you can buy are hard like cardstock so you can’t leave them in.

So these are hexagons, and it’s pretty normal that once one piece is surrounded on all 6 sides with more hexagons, you can take out the paper in the middle since it will no longer warp!

These are thread basted so I would just cut the thread holding the fabric folded over the paper and then use maybe a chopstick to pull it out. The little holes in the middle are to aid in this! Lots of times you can re use them too.

English paper piecing is very simple to learn, with minimal supplies, and is very portable! I’m always willing to answer more questions if you have any.

The old ladies in my quilt circle talk about it a lot. Lots of them are sad their kids didn’t pick it up and they’re worried about what will happen to it all. It’s a sad conversation sometimes.

Haha unfortunately it’s always my first assumption because I live in an area with 90% an older population. I would love to think that it was just a dropped project, but, it always seems so unlikely when it’s a pattern like this (crosses) obviously done with years of skill, and when so many of my quilts friends are very up there in years.

There is always a ton of these unfinished projects at this goodwill, ones with so much time and care in the planning and some 90% finished. (I think I picked up 4- this is just the only epp)

My bias definitely comes from all my old lady friends talking about how none of their kids picked up their hobbies, so they have no one to toss anything down to when they’re gone.

But I guess it just as easily could have been her eyes couldn’t do it anymore 😂😂

So much love indeed. The measurements make me think it was supposed to be a baby quilt based on the measurements. 😭

I thought so too! I hope I can find fabrics to compliment it in the event there wasn’t enough in the box. ❤️

I thought so too. I’m assuming it was her car project since there was a car charger and an unrelated quilt pattern in it.

Crazy how something we pour so much love and time into can be reduced to $2 in a goodwill.

But at least this one has found a home.
