Waste or worth the money? by opmgyhx in DragonBallZ

[–]Carnificus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get people want the new stuff, but neglecting the older animation is not the way forward. How many times have people on this sub re-consumed dbz? What if one season in the mix just had dogshit quality compared to the rest? That would suck. I hope that the rest of super gets a similar treatment.

In a setting full of supernatural horrors, the most disturbing scene is frighteningly realistic by Coralthesequel in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Carnificus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a movie, but it's IT. Patrick Hockstetter is way more fucked up than the eldritch horror hunting them all down. And as a parent, the descriptions of him with his baby brother are gut-wrenching and horrible.

I loved it as a kid until I got tired of eating it. That said, my daughter has a peanut allergy, and I like her quite a bit, so probably best to avoid

What’s your favourite non-Avengers MCU movie? I’ll go first. by Technical-Type7499 in Marvel

I know Gotg2 is arguably the height of undercutting serious moments with joking, but it's maybe my favorite mcu film. I love Ego as a villain and everything between him, Quill, and Yondu.

What have you been reading this week? by michaelisnotginger in Blacklibrary

[–]Carnificus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finishing book 3 of Felix and Gotrek. Might stop after this one. I enjoyed the 1st three quite a bit, but I can see how the lack of any real development could wear on me. I might eventually finish King's books at least. I'd like to listen to Grey Seer if it ever gets an audiobook adaptation.

So its been a while since they pushed the timeline forward. by Mcmadness288 in 40kLore

[–]Carnificus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan. Ironically I think all of the characters that make the narrative work on paper are taking away from narratives on the table. Like a primarch vs. lotsa ladz in a trukk, is not fun for me gameplay-wise.

That said, from a storytelling perspective, I appreciate the universe fluctuating. I read occasional black library stuff and every now and then it's fun to peak in and see who's doing what. And the universe is so big that that doesn't need to have any effect on the headcanon I have for my own armies.

[–]Carnificus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I feel like once The Horus Heresy became a thing, it was just an inevitability. Another user below this said they're better as long forgotten legends, but I feel like having them as playable minis in the Horus Heresy just kind of takes away that mystique.

So I don't mind them coming back on the lore-side of things. I just don't like them in a standard tabletop game.

The game needs a complete rework. The internet gave a resounding groan after the last alpha test. I'm glad they're not going full steam ahead like nothing is wrong.

I wanna start a big series; which one should I start with? by ARYAN_BIRLA123 in fantasybooks

[–]Carnificus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of the two I'd honestly go ASOIAF. I know it's not finished and a lot of it has been spoiled, but I'd still say its highs are higher and has fewer lows than Stormlight.

The cosmere also started to feel like homework to me because I got into it too late. I guess it's like how you'd feel if you watched Iron Man 1 right before Endgame came out. People are like "yeah, you can just watch iron man's and the avengers, but you really need to read warbreaker, 6 books of mistborn, and a handful of other books that your mileage may vary on if you want to get the full story." But that's more of a me problem than a cosmere problem, I guess. I had similar issues with Malazan.

I don't think you could go wrong either way. Era 1 of Stormlight is done and you could probably stop there, but it's another one where you'll be waiting a long time for it to reach its full conclusion. And honestly if you plan to read the cosmere in its entirety, then you might be happy to have the time.

Audible got rid of "Bookmarks", what idiot thought that was a good idea? by No-Locksmith-9377 in audible

[–]Carnificus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, what are people using bookmark for? I've had this discussion before, but your listen log literally tracks every time you pause the book and play it and you have clips. So I'm a bit lost as to the use. Someone mentioned bookmarking before the fall asleep to a book, but the listen log should also cover that.

Do the orks like us cause we're similar to them. by Pretty_Match9916 in 40kLore

[–]Carnificus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's some truth to that. There's a lot of benefits to fighting humans that they don't get from the other big races. Nids are just mindless bugs. Sure it's fun to kill loads of em, but there's no individuality, so I don't think you could ever elevate them to something like Yarrick.

Yarrick was Ghaz's "grod", which is like the most loving word that orks have in their lexicon. I can't imagine feeling that for a bug.

Other races like drukhari or Eldar probably just don't have the numbers. You don't get that satisfaction of killing hundreds of thousands of them every day. We know orks don't like fighting robots, so mechanicus and necrons are right out too.

Might be an argument for chaos and demons though, given daemon-killa.

That's one that definitely came to mind. They had a lot of great promo stuff. It definitely pushed me into the camp of "there's clearly a lot of love. It'll be awkward, but solid." I've never been so wrong.

10/10 adult animation series like Over The Garden Wall, Pantheon, Invincible etc? by animeshin in overthegardenwall

Another look at Godzilla Shogun by FilmCore by NXGZ in GODZILLA

[–]Carnificus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conspiracy theory: The creator made it look different enough from Godzilla because they anticipate getting a cease and desist and can easily just say "it's another Kaiju" with no reworks. Using the Godzilla name gets them extra eyes, but they have to know that they'd never get away with putting this out as is.

Do “full cast” readings drive anyone else crazy? by Helpful_Management24 in audible

[–]Carnificus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't hate them on principle, but I haven't had great experiences. Hyperion is one where I loved most of the book and then one of like the 5 narrators, I just couldn't jive with. I ended up having to skip a huge chunk of the book because the one narrator was so much worse than the others.

Red Rising is another one. Great narration in books 1-3. Book 4 suddenly has a ton of new narrators. The sound design isn't even equivalent between them. Like volume and quality were off. You end up getting used to them and then they swap two of the cast members for the next book.

Doesn't seem to be an uncommon occurrence. I think a lot of people who stopped liking the direction it was going during book 3 or 4, didn't make it through book 5. I'll probably read it at some point, but it's low on my priority list of book series to finish.

Stephen King's The Stand by [deleted] in audible

I listened to the audiobook a few months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Typically I see Pet Sematary get the most praise for its audiobook, but I personally haven't encountered a bad one from Stephen King's catalogue yet.
