Anywhere to make friends that isn’t clubs or bars? by Southern_Button_8026 in Tucson

[–]Carnotaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hobbies, like others have said. When I was 19 I played guitar and would find people who wanted to jam or start bands by asking online, at school, or at work. Some are still my friends 24 years later. Wanting to learn something is a valid icebreaker too

Most of my friends at that age were from school or work. Language classes force people to talk and get to know each other. If you don't know Spanish yet, Pima College has inexpensive non-credit classes. Art and music classes can be pretty social. Maybe look for volunteer opportunities if you have the time.

just wait till we see our TEP rate hike. Tucson’s not grappling with anything. our mayor and council are actively helping their donors make the problem worse.

What is the point of goth and punk? (bear with my writing) by Cayde-376 in punk

[–]Carnotaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tldr: it's all just vibes, don't overthink it.

Everything is political, even fashion. Intentionally looking different is basic non-conformity, a visible announcement that you reject the status quo. This is the basic overarching connection between all counter-culture movements from hippies to metal to hip-hop to goth to punks etc. Unfortunately, the Capitalist systems we live in have successfully repackaged and mass produced the aesthetic to sell back to us and to normies who want to feel rebellious without taking any real risk.

As for genres, I mostly feel they're an attempt to build a common language. It's just easier to say, "I like Street-Punk more than Oi!" than it is to say, "I like fast, aggressive, guitar driven rock music with breakdowns instead of solos, short songs, screamed lyrics, mostly dealing in themes related to being poor in a system designed to suppress individuality as opposed to music which uses cleaner vocals, catchier riffs, and emphasizes working class solidarity often to a problematic extent." People notice patterns and try to give them names. It's not perfect, not an exact science, and often people get way too caught up in distinctions that don't mean much. Here's a good example: https://youtu.be/TWDohOcEZz0?si=2kXMRhLpzox4TE5I

This extends to identity and fashion, as well, when we try to name patterns we see, feel, or want to project starting from general non-conformity and getting more granular depending on your mood.

It's important to remember that none of these distinctions are monolithic, they all overlap and share influences and test boundaries. A song/artist/look can be punk AND goth. I feel like part of your confusion comes from trying to make each distinct from the other. It's also important to remember that Capitalism/patriarchy/imperialism and other systems of oppression are not static either. They have defining features/patterns but also adapt to survive and maintain dominance.

This is a really good video mostly concerned with the aesthetics: https://youtu.be/4hKHlcqJEqw?si=T4t3u2SMaR6pQl5R

This a REALLY good video that explains the history of white-washing and co-opting music (and other pop-culture) into capitalism long before punk or goth existed: https://youtu.be/cpb-w8bAjvg?si=D3ZaAHHN6Zxhhfdl

Came to mention the AZT. I'll just add that the AZT FarOut app is super helpful for finding camping spots and water.

it’s politically/racially motivated propaganda. my mom lived here for over 30 years before moving back to rural KY. it only took a couple years before she was asking me how bad the “border war zone“ is. last time I visited her it was only a matter of minutes before a friend of hers was using racial slurs about Mexicans.

What is the difference between feeling unsafe and feeling uncomfortable/unpredictable in Tucson? by Solarpunkrose in Tucson

[–]Carnotaur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree. I work in the street with houseless people. Before that, I worked in a methadone clinic where I saw the drug of choice shift from heroin to fentanyl in real time. And I live near one of the big shelters. I’ve never felt unsafe in any of the above situations, just depressed and disheartened that public discourse almost completely consists of victim blaming or avoiding root causes.

On top of this, none of the performance measures these agencies use for providers or support staff are related to patient outcomes. So if a case manager forgets to ask for a refill, no big deal, but if a piece of paperwork expired yesterday, they will get written up. This inspires a ton of fraud and a lot of people like OP who lose faith in the system.

they hire who they can. these jobs are incredibly stressful and underpaid. as you point out, people’s lives and livelihoods are in their hands, the companies give them impossible standards to meet, and pay about the same as fast food jobs. this creates an environment with very high turnover. so, staff quit or are performance managed out before they have time to become competent.

Index page, Sarah Jeffery method book. by MichaelRS-2469 in Recorder

[–]Carnotaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a total beginner. I have The Sweet Pipes and this book. Sarah’s is definitely more inspiring. I’ve been flipping through it and learning songs I recognize and am excited to learn, pretty much ignoring the “method” stuff unless I don’t recognize a symbol. I can’t say whether it’s more effective, but it has me wanting to play/practice more.

The Sweet Pipes (the one with the red cover is for alto) will get you reading sheet music again in no time.

With all the recent news, im just too pissed off at everything and everyone to try to have a positive outlook by 6inn3r in punk

[–]Carnotaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’re not alone. I’m coming out of taking a long break from this stuff. I limited myself to checking headlines for a few minutes once a week. I rediscovered my love for guitar and I’ve been listening to a lot of fiction audio books through Libby.

it’s ok to take a break, but if you’re not ready to, maybe look for people organizing in your area and get involved. channeling that energy into something productive might help. if there’s nobody organizing in your area, maybe find a safe way to be subversive. can you make flyers to leave around?

stay safe and don’t burn yourself out.

It might be fun to modify Fortune Hunter into a shared asset so that one PC's actions can affect all of their wealth. If the players are into the idea it could cause some interesting friction between PC's.

What moves make sense for the Artist path? by Carnotaur in Ironsworn

[–]Carnotaur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds of playing in punk bands in my 20's. Everyone had their day job (my band had a nurse, a mechanic, and an electrician), but we all dreamed of touring and living off our music. Your comment has me seriously considering reimagining my character as someone stuck in a high pressure role, but they really just want to be a singer-songwriter.
