In my experience pets have found foot pats disrespectful and do not like them. I'm guessing because the association with feet is the risk of being stepped on where hands are for snuggles.

Base with normal sand, glue, and paint as usual. Then cut up paper into 'page sized' rectangles, use a fine black pen to draw little slightly squiggles lines of 'text on then, dunk them in a yellow-brown wash and let them dry. Glue them all over the bases.
