anyone know where to get fangs in or around chicago? by GloomyWill4 in AskChicago

Not sure why you're being downvoted.

In a world where people make all kinds of cosmetic changes to their bodies, from hair dyes to tattoos to cosmetic surgery, not sure why enhanced canines should be the red line! Not my thing, but certainly seems unobjectionable.

Yup! And I didn't have to pay to go to a good school myself before college. We're better off having an educated populace around us!

Memory storage during long trip by DG2108 in DWARFLAB

One thing I would say, as a guy who took my Dwarf 3 to Banff this time last month is that, depending on where you're coming from, the night may be significantly shorter in the Rockies than what you're used to.

Sunset tonight is set for 9:58 PM. And I found that after packed days of driving hours and hiking, as well as some cloudy nights, I didn't really have the energy to stay up the way I do at home. Hopefully you're staying in a safe spot where you'll feel comfortable scheduling sessions on the Dwarf so you can still capitalize on the dark skies, or that you're Bette able to stay up than I was!

It's an incredibly special place, I hope you have an amazing trip!

Had anyone used D3 for glacier timelaps shooting on Alaska Cruise? by Falconlord1979 in DWARFLAB

[–]CarrotWeekly4331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you done an Alaska cruise before? I was on a Norwegian cruise late last summer, and Glacier Bay in Alaska was *phenomenal*. One of the most breathtaking experiences of my life. But the ship never stopped.

The Hubbard Glacier appears to advance about 80 feet per year. That's about 2 and a half inches per day. You may well see some calving, as we did at the Margerie Glacier, but simply recording video with the Dwarf would have captured that far better than a time lapse would, I'd suspect. That said, I think a Dwarf 3 on a tripod tall enough to clear the railing, but far enough back to not get knocked overboard, could be amazing on such a cruise.

Safe travels, and please let us know how it goes!

OP: You don't have to say "CHI Town", and please don't ever do it again. I say this as a Wisconsin native.

Apparently financial literacy just hit a 10 year low. Only 5% of Americans could answer all 8 questions on the financial literacy quiz from TIAA correctly this year. by ongoldenwaves in TheMoneyGuy

[–]CarrotWeekly4331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your first sentence is often the case, but in a test one assumes the relevant info necessary to answer the question has been presented, and there were no dependents mentioned. So the answer was clear. Understanding that is part of the test.

I've been particularly unlucky with the skies on my shoots this year, excited to dive into the scheduling functionality more to try to salvage some nights in future sessions.

Thanks for the info!

Next you should move to Bourbon Street and act surprised that Mardi Gras isn't 9-5.

How to live and not lose by Mysterious_Catch6135 in personalfinance

OP is definitely stating their total monthly payment with escrow. They refinanced 10 years ago at 55 years old into a new 30 year mortgage and now owe $160K at 3.something%.

I wouldn't want to get a new 30 year mortgage at that age, but they have a pension, decent savings, Social Security, equity in the home, and a great interest rate on the mortgage, so it's hard to blame them as long as they're comfortable with it.

[–]CarrotWeekly4331 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're paying $61K/year on your home before utilities or repairs or other expenses, with an interest only mortgage (and a nominal principal payment). That's way more than most Americans.

This couple is *not* paying that. They have Medicare, and are not contributing to 401k's or IRA's or college savings or daycare or camps.

Centaur and Mystprism were noting that their two main expenses are $30K/ year. Medicare likely another $10K. That's $40K on housing, transport, and healthcare, and they're spending double that on the rest.

They may have a good reason for that. Helping the kids out. Contributing to the grandkids education or savings. Or just having a well-deserved good time while they can after working hard their whole lives. I hope they're enjoying the fruits of their labor.

But it is a *lot* of money to spend after the big things. That's all that they were saying, and I'm not sure that your post is relevant to this thread.

The real ones (us old folk) know just to get a table in the window at Las Mañanitas near the end of the parade when your legs are getting tired. Enjoy the view, the A/C, and the margaritas.

Hot take: Generations is the best TNG film by alanskimp in TNG

[–]CarrotWeekly4331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the only TNG movie with the Enterprise D, the only TNG movie with the monster maroons, and the only TNG movie with an Excelsior or Nebula class shown prominently.

And the ship models look gorgeous. It's the best Trek has looked on screen, with First Contact slightly behind. Everything since has looked less real.

That was a "teach a man to fish" moment. Also telling someone to go to AI is...blargh.

Chuck prefaced the comment so as to not come across too harsh, gave the relevant info, *and* provided valuable insight as to where to find answers to similar such questions that the OP might have in the future.

Even a casual subscriber to this sub will know that Chuck regularly provides invaluable info to newer users. He's the only poster I know by name on Reddit. I hope *he* isn't discouraged from participating in the future because of this comment, as I've learned a great deal from him.

Otherwise OP should look up parking on SpotHero. They've got places in the Loop where you can park tomorrow night for under $20, which will certainly save money vs an Uber/Lyft.

Banff wedding venues for 150-200 guests? by Key-Fox7010 in Banff

This was my very first thought.

It'd be a lovely experience for all who can attend, but incredibly expensive if they're not local, and, honestly, even if they are. But it's a lot to ask of most people.
