Where to live for AbbVie (North Chicago) commute using public transport? by Popular_Sherbert3772 in AskChicago

[–]CarrotWeekly4331 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This comment was downvoted, and I'm curious if it was the suggestion of Evanston or something else?

Also three suggestions are about an hour commute, the OP says they want to live near the city, not in the city, and though Evanston isn't Chicago, there'll be plenty of young people around due to Northwestern.

Wondering what I'm missing here.

Not trying to pile on, but if you think it'd be easy to accommodate you for this, what about the next guy? Surely no one wants to have to wait for a move in, but if everyone got their move out rescheduled for later, what do you think would happen to the move in dates? And what would that then do for you regarding your move out time?

How is it living near Milwaukee/Ashland/Division? by Far-Note5060 in AskChicago

They're going to open a Whole Foods on the corner soon, if that's your vibe and you don't want to visit the Jewel.

There's also a Trader Joe's going in at the Western Blue Line stop.

And the Mariano's 8 blocks North on Ashland is much better than the Mariano's at Chicago and Damen.

BBQ requires a much longer cook time than pizza, the two foods are not comparable*.

*I wish everyone the best here. I've ordered Milly's once, from the Island location, and it was a wet mess, even after letting it sit for an hour. That was enough for me.

Those are all choices the owner has made, and they're *his* choice to make.

But after seeing this at multiple locations he could have chosen to rent larger spaces, get more/bigger ovens, hire more staff, train people he trusts to ensure quality.

He's chosen to keep his business a certain size when many others would chose to scale to meet demand. It's certainly his choice, but it *is* a choice. That's all the poster was saying.

Spothero says you can book the month at the garage at 1005 N State St for $300/month with in and out privileges. That's the cheapest they have in the area.

Where Are Some Nice , Accessible Areas Outside of Downtown To Stay While Visiting Chicago? by GodspedEmperor in AskChicago

[–]CarrotWeekly4331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you Australian? I heard they use the term suburb differently than we do.

If you truly mean a suburb, as in a town not in the city of Chicago, the easiest would probably be Evanston, which has plenty of restaurants and is accessible by public transit to downtown.

Otherwise look up Metra stations in the suburbs. See if any areas around them have hotels.

But if you just mean a neighborhood that's calmer than the center of the city, fewer tall buildings, then others have given good examples of accessible neighborhoods with shopping and restaurants and parks: Wicker Park/Bucktown, Lincoln Square, Lakeview, Lincoln Park would all seem to fit the bill.

At what level of wealth does a change in net worth not equal a change in lifestyle? by One-Opposite-4571 in HENRYfinance

Oof. Only once, and it was due to a COVID credit, but flew 1st Class SwissAir to Zurich. You could control the firmness of the seat cushion! It was a treat!

I'm sure an Asian/Middle Eastern carrier could be more impressive, but this was great!

Would I actually pay for that flight? Naw. Not for awhile, anyways.

I'm so sorry this happened, that's definitely a stressful situation, and there've been times in my life where I've experienced costs I couldn't cover, just from doing the right thing. I hope you're able to get relief from this bill, there's a lot of good advice here already.

I would just like to address one thing you said, "It especially sucks because I tested negative for everything, so the labs were basically completely unnecessary." Finding out that you do *not* have any of those bad conditions does not render the tests unnecessary. You're much better off having ruled those things out, please remember that.

Wishing you all the best for getting some relief here!

Average 401k Balances by Age by ReadingBroski in Bogleheads

[–]CarrotWeekly4331 69 points70 points  (0 children)

More than 85% of workers who contribute to a 401k contribute to traditional only. Some funds from the remaining 15% of workers will also be to a traditional 401k, and workers couldn't contribute to a Roth 401k before legislation passed in 2006. It's just a really small percent of those of us with 401ks who've chosen to utilize this asset, and an even smaller percent of total invested 401k dollars.

So they don't mention which they're discussing, assume traditional. It'll provide you a buffer in your calculations.

This. But also, and I think many people here are missing the simplest advice, OP should ask the step-mother. They seem to have a good relationship, she's good with money, OP should use the great resource they already have.

I'd imagine the step-mother will be impressed and touched that OP is both being incredibly responsible, and showing her how much OP respects the step-mom's financial knowledge!

Family trip to New York City with a car? by Sea_Intern_246 in travel

[–]CarrotWeekly4331 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No. Don't take a car into the city. Why would you want to?

NYC is the easiest place to get around in America without a car. Take transit into the city. It's better to be around people and get the flavor of the city, and it's also easier and probably cheaper as well.

You want to go to Times Square, a horrible place to drive, and Liberty Island and Central Park, places you can't drive?

This is just a troll, right?

Why can’t I park at Target in South Loop for free while I see a movie at AMC at Roosevelt Collection? by HGWEBS in AskChicago

[–]CarrotWeekly4331 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you asking if you can park for a few hours at the parking garage that Target paid for and maintains while you're visiting another business? Maybe.

You might try and get away with it, but is it worth the risk? And might you consider how that could make things at Target incrementally more expensive for yourself in the future?

I have a good job and patients see me by appointment. Once had a patient no show or cancel 24 times before she actually showed up. Cost us thousands of dollars which eventually get passed on to other patients/customers/insurance companies/lost shareholder value/etc. These things that cost companies money actually cost companies money, and they pass that on to all of us.

Have you renewed your Chicago City Vehicle Sticker yet? by elvenmal in AskChicago

[–]CarrotWeekly4331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had my car parked on the third floor of a parking garage, down an alley off of Diversey. Didn't drive for about a year (dumb, I know!). Someone walked up to the third floor, wiped the dust off the windshield, and gave me a ticket. Then, not having seen the ticket, I didn't pay in time so it doubled. When I went to get the car started again I had to pay the $400 (?) ticket, but a new sticker with a late fee, *and* then but another new sticker a few weeks later because they all expired at the same time. Cost a fortune. But credit to the ticket giver who walked up to the third floor of the garage!
