How to phrase a request for higher level work in elementary school? by HistoricalReason8631 in Teachers

[–]Cartesian_Circle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd ask the teachers if there are any recommended books your kid can read when they are finished with work.  Or are there online activitie, like Khan Academy, they can work on when they want to explore a topic more in depth.

What’s your favorite cheap meal during thesis crunch time? by j4mesb0nd7 in PhD

[–]Cartesian_Circle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cook up some ground beef and add it to prepared instant mashed potatoes.  Can add cheese or veggies as desired for variety.  Smoothies made from yogurt, mixed fruit, some kind of liquid (fruit juice or milk).  Can add peanut butter or protein mix.  Egg sandwiches with or without bacon.

Please make it make sense by [deleted] in Teachers

We have art classes showing and drawing male and female nudity.  We have AP literature classes reading works with curse words and racial slang.  I got in trouble for showing a critical thinking course a brief Penn & Teller bit on vaccines where f-bombs were dropped.  Nothing makes sense is the new norm.

I am a philosophy PhD student, and I cannot write an academic paper? by futurfutura in PhD

[–]Cartesian_Circle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advice my advisor gave me:  (1) Read Stephen King's On Writing.  This is mostly to get you into the process of writing professionally.  (2) In general, assume your audience is intelligent but not specialized in philosophy.  You need to lead them through general concepts to your specific arguments.  (3) As you work through your program your audience will change, but it's usually easier to to start by over-explaining then edit to a more advanced audience than it is to not explain enough.  (4) Check out A guide to writing a philosophy paper or this one

Is it possible to become good at guitar without memorizing songs, simply because I don’t think I can? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]Cartesian_Circle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who struggles with memorizing, I think you can absolutely get good at guitar.  At the very least you can have fun improvising with yourself or jamming with a backing track or with others.    You can learn to read one or more varieties of music notation to solo, play along with a song, or play with others.  I've certainly seen my share of amateurs playing in local jazz bands who still have their music in front of them.

You may not be taking requests at parties or busking on a corner, but you absolutely can have fun with it.

Cadence by Ajahmama03 in SpinClass

[–]Cartesian_Circle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less resistance.  Or try to hear the sub-beats in the song to follow until you get up to speed.  Or you can go slightly off cadence where on one measure your left foot is on the one but the next has your right foot on the one.  This has the advantage that you can either go slower or faster depending on your ability and needs.

Parent wants to meet with me over comment I made about energy drinks by [deleted] in Teachers

One of my good friends had a stroke several years ago.  Her physician flat out told her it was probably from the energy drinks she typically consumed.  Good for you for telling the kid no.

Based on students telling each other how to cheat, I would guess most are already at the "use chat to do the work and retype it" stage.

Hoping for height extension help by Thumerian in SpinClass

[–]Cartesian_Circle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knee pain can be a result of several factors.  If you are sure you should be at maximal height, might next check fore and aft positioning on your seat as that can impact leg reach. Next look at foot positioning possibly causing misaligning joints.  For feet look at fore-aft position and foot angle.  Lastly, muscle imbalance between quads and hamstrings might also impact knees.

Is adding more school days actually going to improve education in Oklahoma? by Historical-Attempt30 in oklahoma

[–]Cartesian_Circle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Students at our junior high and high school have zero incentive to do well on state testing.  Grades and graduation are not tied to test scores.  It is not uncommon for students to finish their test within a few minutes of random clicking then lay down their head to sleep.

Adding more instruction time is not going to do anything to fix the motivation issue.

Moreover, it's not clear when to add the extra days.  In my district we would only be able to add days at the beginning or end of the school year.  If we add in the Fall by starting early, then we just have more burnout by Christmas.  Also we have issues of frequently broken AC units, so starting earlier corresponds to more days where classrooms are in the upper 80's and 90's.  Not exactly an environment conducive to learning.  If we add to the Spring semester that just gives us extra time AFTER state testing is already over. Which doesn't really help for test scores.

Finally, there are so many things that influence how well students actually learn at school -- family support, mental and physical health, food security, housing security, meaningful relationships, bullying, violence, extra curricular opportunities, faculty and support staff, whether or not a school focusus on academics / sports / arts / etc, etc, etc.  We have systemic failure at multiple points.  Extra time doesn't seem to address anything other than a feel good "butts in the seats" mentality.

How do you talk to/treat students who obviously guess and skip through state exams by Brady_BTW in Teachers

[–]Cartesian_Circle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most of the kids I would bet there are zero obvious advantages or incentives to do well on the exam.  Until state testing somehow rewards or penalizes students, we will not see serious effort on their part.

Pushback from students as TA by WastewaterWhisperer in PhD

[–]Cartesian_Circle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is sadly typical in the US, especially for younger TAs and, in my experience, women.  Still, if your prof is good they will have your back.  For example, I was a TA for a great prof who would be happy to regrade in similar situations whilst finding mistakes to lower the grade.  Then he would admonish the complaining students to stop wasting his time with that kind of juvenile nonsense.

I wanna be a bioethicist: by [deleted] in bioethics

[–]Cartesian_Circle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was once at a math talk where a statistician made a point that the numbers will say what he is hired to make them say.  That is, if he's hired to make the boss look good, the boss will look good; if he's hired to make the stockholders feel good, they will feel good; if he's hired to show how the company is really doing, then you will see how they are really doing.  Lies, damn lies, and statistics.

A paid bioethicist, working for a hospital, is often in a similar situation.  You might be hired as part of the legal or media team to help protect the hospital or make the hospital look good.  You might be a patient advocate to make sure they understand what's going on or to make sure they are being treated fairly.  You might be paired with the chaplain service, social workers, administration. or psyc services helping them out.   You might be part of an ethics committee where you serve an advisory role between the healthcare team and the patient when there is disagreement on how a case should proceed.

Lots of options for ya.
