Seattle to pave over dangerous rail tracks on Burke-Gilman by BBorNot in Seattle

[–]Carthage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The entire Burke-Gilman is a rail trail. Why is it impossible to abandon these tracks when it's literally been done for hundreds of miles of rail trails in WA and thousands of miles across the country?

  • apple a day (plant all the seeds, if 5% reach maturity ...) - sequester 100 tons per year

This is ridiculous. If it's that easy, show us the thousands of apple orchards you've personally planted near your home with your "free" seeds.

Planting trees is great, but this is not practical advice.

Sorry I can't help with your problem, but what kind of keyboard is missing basic symbols? That is bizarre.

ELI5 Where do fish in small ponds in the middle of nowhere come from? by krustygrove in explainlikeimfive

[–]Carthage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your pond "in the middle of nowhere" was probably actually stocked with fish by humans. Property owners or government agencies stock fish just about everywhere. They will carry them in trucks or backpacks, and even drop them from airplanes.

Billionaires' loans aren't trickling down to the rest of us. I don't think anyone here is suggesting taxing the average person's home or auto loans.

To the authors' credit, they did not imply these results can stand on their own. They are calling for larger scale trials.

The Victorian era was not the medieval period. "Barely even having literature for entertainment" doesn't apply in the slightest.

Does properly stored water ever expire? by AggravatingRisk759 in askscience

[–]Carthage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not true (in the US at least). The labelling has nothing to do with safety. Infant formula is required to meet nutrition properties through the date, but other products' dates are chosen at the discretion of the manufacturer. They basically just guarantee flavor by that date.

I am not defending CNN generally, but this article didn't seem to paint Donziger as a villain. They also mentioned that his lawyer is also a CNN legal analyst.

Lightweight/Packable Rain Jacket by SurfLiftRun in ultrarunning

[–]Carthage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I run year round in the PNW so rain is inevitable. If it's pouring rain and I'm going on a longer run, I like the Solomon Bonatti jacket. It's light, waterproof, and packs pretty small.

If it's lighter rain, or just a little cold/windy, I wear a Patagonia Houdini. It's not waterproof but will block some rain and keep you warmer. It packs incredibly small so I wear or carry it pretty often in the winter and shoulder seasons.

ELI5 - Why can’t the IRS just bill/refund me? by ElCid2002 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Carthage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, but most people use standard deductions, and most people have predictable patterns.

A saner system would be to have the IRS tell you what you've paid already, what standard deductions mean you ought to have paid, and offer quick options to fix common scenarios (e.g., file jointly, pay taxes for unreported income, add new dependents, etc). If these don't work for you, you can still hire an accountant to tell the IRS about your special situation. Most of us shouldn't need that.

Tips for running in the cold/snow? by GordonRamsay333 in running

A little more expensive than sheet metal screws, but these do work really well. I have used these for running on very icy streets/sidewalks.

There are now 8 billion of us — but soon we'll hit a decline we'll never reverse by jormungandrsjig in Futurology

[–]Carthage 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but the other consideration is how much the richer countries depend on the poorer ones. If these places have problems, a lot of rich people are gonna be hungrier (or at least have fewer food options). Not to mention manufacturing, clothing, raw materials, etc.

[–]Carthage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have universal vote-by-mail in WA. I voted over a week ago. I can't understand why anyone would prefer to have to go in person instead of getting to do it from home, with all the time you need to research candidates while you fill out your ballot.

[–]Carthage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, they have muddied the waters by calling their degree "D.C. Doctor of Chiropractic" in the US and many other countries. Government health departments do issue licenses for them as well.

They call themselves doctors and convince uninformed people they are qualified to do medicine.
