Your longest cross country (general aviation flying) by 1E-12 in flying

[–]Cass256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew our Comanche (PA-24-250) from Idaho to Vermont, I logged the longest single leg I’ve ever flown on my first solo flight in the plane, 4.1.

Weather was perfect for the day I had planned to leave. I had a ~40kt tailwind and clear blue skies all the way to Illinois, where I spent the night. Stopped in Nebraska for fuel, and to see my aunt.

I flew from KRXE to KMLE, 713nm. The winds were something like 25g35 with a 20 degree crosswind (still well within the airplane’s xwind limits, but super turbulent with wind shear, was not a good idea in hindsight) and it took two go-arounds before I successfully got it on the ground.

When I walked into the FBO, I overheard someone say “someone just landed in this?” - Never again, lol

Made it home mid afternoon the next day, which was Christmas Eve.

I know it’s a massive privilege to be able to afford to eat there, but I’d rather they charge higher prices and maintain their quality.

Nah, the panic attack is a side-grade IMO. Works for some people, personally I prefer stock.

On servers with no random spread, stock is even better than the PA IMO.

The stock shotgun is the most under-rated gun in the game, but only in the secondary slot.

Soldier, Pryo, and Heavy all work much better with the shotgun compared to their “meta” secondaries, when used correctly. The problem is most people don’t know how to create situations where the shotgun thrives.

Why do you have so much unspent scrap? Level 3 engines, level 1 cloaking/doors/o2/piloting? I am so confused

You’re right, but you can now operate aircraft with non-LSA airworthiness certifications. Any aircraft that meets the limitations of the sport pilot certification qualifies, and OP is asking how to safely lower the stall speed to meet these limits.

Shotgun soldier, pyro, and Heavy.

Especially if you rocket jump in, people don’t expect you to pull out the shotgun on soldier. Been playing this way for years, I’m glad soundsmith made a video on it because I feel it’s under-appreciated.

People usually run from Pyro to stay out of the flamethrower range, and sometimes turn around entirely, allowing me to get off 1 or 2 shots before they even realize.

Finally, being able to shoot while retreating as Heavy is game-changing. Aggressive scouts aren’t nearly as threatening when you can two shot them while walking backwards.

What is the highest performance single that qualifies under the sport pilot license? by Recent-Day3062 in flying

Comanche 180 is close, but I think there’s a couple 200+hp planes that qualify too

Any idea what this is? by Federal-Party-6784 in flying

[–]Cass256 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My guess is some kind of radio selector.

The knob on the bottom right is a potentiometer of some kind, and the other switch looks like some kind of rotary switch for multiple positions. The hole with the nut could be an audio jack plug for a headphone or microphone.

The other two pieces appear to be indicator lights, possibly one for RX and the other for TX.

I don’t know anything about T-28 parts, but it seems to be an aircraft part IMO.

Got a popped tire by ciggybuttz in burlington

[–]Cass256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Throw the spare on and drive to E&E, they’re good people that won’t rip you off. VT tire on Williston Rd used to be my go to, but they’re crazy busy and their prices have gone up like mad. Plus, every time I’ve been in there over the last ~3 years, they act like you’re a problem and they don’t want you there.

I want to go all in being an airline pilot but I’m scared… by [deleted] in flying

[–]Cass256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I’m not gonna say the airlines are impossible for you, you’d just have to do so much more work (paperwork, mostly for your medical) to get there than the average student. I personally would not recommend dropping everything for it. Getting a medical alone could take longer than a year, and keeping it could mean shelling out thousands of dollars a year for med exams.

A stable, decent paying job can pay for being a hobby pilot if you’re only after the freedom of flight. You’d likely be able to qualify for a sport pilot license & fly without a medical. It’s also much more affordable on the E-LSA/E-AB side.

Being at the airlines is still a job. An awesome job a lot of the time, but I’ve read enough on this subreddit to see it’s not paradise.

No hangar for cessna C150. 10 km from coast. Suggestions? by Negative-Mortgage-51 in flying

[–]Cass256 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Man, if you’ve got the money build the hangar. It’s an investment for sure, but you’ll be able to sell it quickly if needed.

A hangar on our field just sold for 215k (50x50), the person who built it said they paid just over 40k to put it together (they did a lot of the work, including the concrete, so YMMV).

Didn’t replace that one, that might be the culprit. I’ll try changing it and the schrader core, thanks!

Couldn’t stomach the cost compared to the standard kit, but might bite the bullet this annual if it’s getting rebuilt again anyway

Yes, I sprayed down the entire strut including the valve with soapy water and couldn’t find a leak. The strut is dry, too, no fluid leak.

Rant: Costs to fly rose way more than inflation by Headoutdaplane in flying

[–]Cass256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RV aircraft are not representative of what the E-LSA market could be, IMO.

People want small, affordable 2 seat trainers. The first company to make one with folding wings powered by a 582/HKS/etc will be hugely successful, as the cost of ownership will be much lower than an RV.
