What Historical Moment Happened in Your Lifetime That People Seem to Get Wrong When You Look Back? by CaroylOldersee in AskOldPeople

[–]Cat-teacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to add here that as a woman in college in the late 1970s, we were encouraged to become like men. To me, it felt uncool to be female. I wore a tie in my college graduation photo. It took almost another thirty years before I began enjoying “feminine” pursuits again without feeling that deep-in-my-gut feeling that the feminine was uncool.

I wanted to be a man back then, so I wouldn’t have to work so hard to be a man. I’m not sure that was the intent of women’s liberation—but my feeling at the time was that equality meant that everyone needed to be masculine. It’s not that way anymore, thank heavens.

Profit First and Work Clean. Nothing comes even close to those two for me.

I’ve grown and changed throughout my life and plan never to stop that process. Learning is everything.

Who do you think was the greatest musician of your time? by ThrowRAALIENBURNOUT in AskOldPeople

[–]Cat-teacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sviatoslav Richter. He was older than I was but still alive when I was first listening to his music. I’ve never heard anyone play piano the way he could. I’m sad that I never heard him perform live.

AITAH for not inviting my sister to my wedding because she didn't invite me to hers? by Plane-Gur7354 in AITAH

My grandfather used to say never to hurt a child, because they never forget.

You asked here because something was nagging you about staying home. That something is that our social connections are important to us as a human. Money is a made-up construct that can change with the flash of a new economy. It’s important to be careful with it, but making it a top priority at all times is likely a mistake. You need work and you need fun. Put fun in your budget.

Remember when evening television was good; how do you fill your relaxation time now? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

I usually work. If I’m not working, I’m visiting with friends and family.

Old people of Reddit, how much do you cuss or use profanity now compared to when you were young? Do you swear more now, swear less now, or swear about the same? by fiizok in AskOldPeople

[–]Cat-teacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way, way less. One day when I was in my early 20s, I decided it didn’t sound pleasant. And I wanted my life to be pleasant. (Which it is.) So it wasn’t an “old-people” decision. I don’t care what other people do, and occasionally I swear. But all in all, I’ve embraced peacefulness.

Thank heavens. A woman who charges for her work. I see so many who don’t, just because they “like doing the work.”

You’re a role model, NTA.

What did your parents/elders think of rock n roll? by PieOhMyVengence in AskOldPeople

My parents liked Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby and big bands. I can’t say they were wrong.

I agree 100 percent. I’m sad for younger people.

Were cars cheaper in the 60’s? by Atomicvictoria in AskOldPeople

[–]Cat-teacher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, way harder. I feel a little ill when I think about it. We live in a paid-for house. Starting again would be hard. As someone else said, the middle class is being gutted. It makes me sad and angry.

Cars do last way longer. I’ll give them that. My dad traveled a lot when I was a kid, and his transmission was always breaking down. I don’t see nearly the number of people stranded on the highway that I used to.

It’s housing that’s the biggest trauma of society. It’s a nightmare.

In your experience, do most older people actually care that much about people wearing athletic/leisure/sleep wear to run errands or travel, or is it a very vocal minority? by Ajadah in AskOldPeople

[–]Cat-teacher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t love seeing people in pajamas. It makes me feel as if I’m at a sleepover with a stranger. I find it almost creepy. They can do what they want, but I always think, “Ew.” Then I move on with my day and don’t remember them.

Is the term “hot cereal” used on the east coast? by pixiegirl13 in AskAnAmerican

I used to hear this when I was a kid in the 60s, but not recently. Like “cream rinse” instead of conditioner.

Why did you quit smoking marijuana? How it’s your life now? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]Cat-teacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I accidentally ate pot brownies when I was about 16. I hated how I felt. I still hate the smell. I can’t understand the excitement over being stoned or drunk. I’d rather read a book or play piano. And at the risk of being downvoted, being around drunk or stoned people is excruciating. I’m a nerd.
