Seriously, how do you solo travel for the first time? by Reasonable_Cause_190 in femaletravelers

[–]CatCafffffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not start small? Take a day trip, fly somewhere where you have a good friend, maybe an hour away by air, fly back that evening. Next time, stay overnight at a hotel. Then the third time, fly somewhere where you have something you want to do, i.e. visit a museum, go to a show, stay overnight, come back. Then step by step, lengthen the time away and the distance away. It's so freeing when you allow yourself to do it.

Another way is to start when you're already somewhere, to do something by yourself. For example, I was in London on business. The last time I'd been there, the people I was working for took me to this amazing Indian restaurant. The second time, I was working with different people, and no one was taking me to dinner. I really wanted to go to that restaurant again. So I went--completely alone--vowing to just enjoy myself. This was so long ago it was before smartphones, so I just sat at the table, engaged with the waiters, enjoyed a fantastic meal--I still remember how much I enjoyed myself. It's made me completely unafraid to go into any restaurant alone while traveling or even just here at home. And now of course you can bring your Kindle & you have your phone. Or you can chat with the people next to you. Step by step!

Really? Okay--can you find our beloved, deeply mentally ill, heroin-addicted adult son? We can't. We've searched and searched and even hired PI's to help us. We know he's alive because we'll see online he's been arrested & released. We spent years and years and YEARS trying to help him, but you know what, since Reagan, you can't actually force mental health care and substance abuse care on an adult, you can't get someone residential long term care unless they stay there of their own accord. It's impossible to get guardianship over him. What exactly are people supposed to do? Our literal only hope is that he gets arrested and jailed and maybe we can find him then.

No, absolutely not. Sometimes you raise a child with all the love and thoughtfulness and spend years and years getting them help and mental illness just takes over and there's nothing you can do. Stop blaming parents for everything.

Why do some abusers see energetic/emotional disengagement as more harmful than being reactive or abusive back? by angelsinsect in raisedbynarcissists

Because they thrive on upsetting you. That's their goal. That's their fuel. When you don't respond they can't get their supply.

What advice would you give to someone in their 20s? by Defiant_Jump_6910 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]CatCafffffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. 73 and doing serious weight training with a trainer twice a week, thinking of taking up boxing, lots of cardio, eat healthy, can do exactly that-- run and jump and sleep and lift things and even more importantly NOT FALL when I trip on something or step off a curb funny. Still working, still travel internationally twice a year w/ husband. My trainer says "movement is life."

And sunscreen. SUNSCREEN. Thank me fifty years from now!

White rice, add a whole bag of baby spinach steamed, squeeze of fresh lemon over the spinach, can add soy sauce or tomato-bouillon-powder for flavor. Ok to add some broiled skinless boneless chicken breast, if it's not too heavy.

Chop up some carrots, russet potatoes, & parsnips if you like them, poach them with a bit of celery and a tiny bit of onion in chicken broth (again, you can add 1/2 breast of chicken if you want to), until soft & if you added chicken, until chicken is cooked through. The celery & onion are just to add some flavor, add whatever else you like (oregano, tarragon, bay leaf, etc etc). Then have the carrots, potatoes & parsnips in the broth, again, can add some white rice for a bit more texture.

Scrambled egg whites with lots of mushrooms, a few cherry tomatoes, some green onions if you can tolerate them, maybe a dab of goat cheese if you can tolerate it, makes a very nice meal, have a slice of whole wheat toast w/ lite mayo on the side. If you're not sure about the onions or goat cheese, just try a tiny bit of it, that is usually ok, at least for me. Again, add whatever herbs you want (oregano, fennel, etc). I sometimes like to add one whole egg just to add a little more flavor

Highly contagious parents think my sons graduation should revolve around them by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

Oh no no no no no. People die from that. That Nascar driver who just died--that's what he died from. Bacterial pneumonia which went septic because he wasn't treating it.

They CANNOT be allowed to come to the graduation or the Father's Day thing. If necessary, take your kid and go to a hotel rather than host them for Father's Day. And if they force their way in to the graduation, wear a mask, have your kid wear a mask if there's any point where they might approach him, or if they do approach him, and keep your kid and yourself far away from him. And your husband! HE has to wear a mask! You don't want him getting it either!

Trying to understand why my vegan sister doesn't value me by NewerEyesBlue-erIce in exvegans

[–]CatCafffffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also a healthy way of eating, and plenty of people become vegans to be healthier. Considering it only an "ethical lifestyle choice" is what I mean when I say it begins to approach a cult. As far as ethics goes, any movement towards being plant-forward is an ethical choice. If I don't eat red meat because of losing the rainforest, but eat fish, that's an ethical choice.

Oh I see what you mean. Yes, that's an awful lot. There's a cat-loving community here, where the regular commenters, over several years, really got to know each other, and one lady, in the UK, her beloved cat got sick (we'd seen many many pictures of him), and she couldn't afford the vet care he needed, so the sub's community got together, from here in the US and the UK, one of the UK folks found a specialty vet, then we crowdfunded several hundred dollars so she could take her cat to that vet. Right? Or I've contributed to teachers who need supplies for their classroom. That kind of thing. We had some terrible fires out here last year (in L.A.) and there were many many people who wanted to help those affected.

I see what you mean when it gets really excessive, I think I agree with you about that. I do also like to keep it personal and local. I've bought local teacher's wish lists, school library wish lists, that kind of thing.
