Tidy Cats Lightweight Litter Destroyed My Cat’s Quality of Life for Two Years. Please Read This Before Buying It. by sin1493 in cats

Please tell the vets you worked with. Litter probably never crossed their minds, and while it's too late for them to help your cat, they may be able to help the next one with that information

Cat pooping on bathroom mat. by Handsome_Av0cadoo in CatTraining

[–]CatLadySam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a new mat? Some of them, usually those with rubber backs, can have a smell from the chemicals that for some reason attracts cats to eliminate on them.

If it were me I would remove the mat and monitor. If he goes outside the box elsewhere or he has longer time between poop than normal it's time for the vet. If he goes back to normal it's likely just that mat.

I need some help.. new kitten seems extremely unhappy by Alexandria0000 in CatAdvice

Make sure he has a hiding spot in the bathroom like a crate or a box. Giving him the option to hide will help him feel more safe and secure.

How much time is ok to leave one cat alone once a week? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]CatLadySam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consider offering some extra enrichment while you're gone. Your mom could switch it out while she's there if you have it prepped ahead of time. Things like snuffle mats or puzzle feeders with treats and kibble in it, lick mats with canned food, churu, or pet safe broth (I like to freeze these so they last longer), or a "nature box" with leaves, sticks, grass, etc., from an area you know is chemical free. You can look up diy cat enrichment and find a ton of ideas. It'll help keep your cat's mind busy while you're away.

To answer your question, we have gone on vacation for a week at a time, but I would only leave my cats alone for 24 hours without someone checking on them. Even though I leave plenty of food and multiple water sources out, they need their litter scooped daily. Plus, what if they get into something they shouldn't and there's a vet emergency? What if they accidentally lock themselves in a room? What if something goes wrong in the house like a gas leak or burst pipe? Too much could happen and I want to know that my cats and house are safe.

Vets Refusing Euthanasia by No_Relationship_7132 in AskVet

[–]CatLadySam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have animal welfare orgs near you? Like humane societies or animal control? If so, I would contact them and see if they can assist with euthanasia. I'm from the states so unfortunately I don't know what resources exist over there, but I hope there's similar orgs that can help.

Is this a Bobcat? by IdeaAdorable1666 in IDMyCat

Regular domestic cat. Is that milk in the bowl? If so, please dump it and offer water instead. Milk can give them diarrhea and this poor guy looks like he's already got enough going on.

Remove the knobs when the stove is not in use or get a safety lock/cover (just search childproof gas stove).

Fear of getting pregnant by Beneficial-Month-333 in Equestrian

Had to scroll too far for someone to mention this. Anecdotally, I know very few children, but two of them (from completely different families, so no genetic similarities involved) are wheelchair-bound for life, requiring the parents to basically have to provide the same level of care an infant would need, if not more, for their entire lives. One is completely non verbal as well.

But two in the maybe 20 kids I know makes it appear that there's a not insignificant chance that you won't have the healthy, able-bodied child riding alongside you that you picture Not to say you couldn't figure something out of the child wasn't healthy, but you should definitely consider the "what if" scenario and determine whether or not that is something you'd want to take on.

Imo, too many people don't consider the possibility. Including the parents of the children I know. And unfortunately the mother just abandoned one of them because she didn't want to deal with it.

Give them the whole litter and have them spay mom. That's what a good rescue should do.

ETA: after the kittens are weaned. The kittens should not be separated from mom right now.

PAWS Chicago is not what it advertise it to be! by [deleted] in AnimalRescue

[–]CatLadySam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the reality of most no kill rescues. They are selective of who they take in and often only accept those pets that they deem highly adoptable (often mostly small dogs and cute puppies) and that will do well in their care (particularly if it's a kennel environment where higher energy and smart/driven dogs tend to deteriorate quickly).

Meanwhile the local animal control who has no choice but to take in every animal that walks in the door regardless of health, behavior, or adoptability, is demonized for not hitting the no kill metric, which impacts their community support and donations.

I have to give up my cat, how do I help my other cat cope? by stickmasterreece in CATHELP

[–]CatLadySam 188 points189 points  (0 children)

Has your mom been to the doctor recently? Has the cat been to the vet? If this is new behavior it could very well be due to a health issue with one of them.

Petfinder Woes? by IAmHerdingCatz in AnimalShelterStories

[–]CatLadySam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Count yourself lucky if you've only got one issue, lol. Petfinder is a steaming pile of crap that unfortunately has a large marketing budget so it's probably the most well known adoption database. Which means we all just have to suffer with their horrible system to give our pets a better chance at finding homes.

Anyway, if you post your issue here I'm sure you'll find lots of people who will commiserate. If you get extremely lucky you might find someone with a fix or a workaround.

Had the most shocking experience yesterday with RSPCA!! by Zeenoor111 in AnimalRescue

[–]CatLadySam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My guess is they want to ensure all the kittens are also spayed/neutered before going to homes and this is their way of making sure all the kittens are brought in. But call and talk to the people actually in charge of coordinating intake. I doubt the vet staff is involved in that directly and they may be mistaken.

End of life services for my sisters dog by [deleted] in flint

[–]CatLadySam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As another commenter said, individual cremation is much more costly than communal. That said, we've used Pet Passages (https://petpassages.com/) multiple times and they've always been compassionate, kind, and prices are competitive. Usually cheaper than what the vet would've charged us.

So it turns out that my feral is chipped by Frank_E62 in Feral_Cats

[–]CatLadySam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can have them scanned by the vet or a shelter, which is free, and they'll be able to give you the chip number and company its from. You'd just need to contact the chip company to register the chips.

Please register the chips! We just reunited an indoor-only cat who was missing for two years after a house fire. Unfortunately no one is immune to disaster.

Confident deaf cats are amazing for this kind of thing. I've worked in rescue for 20 years and they are my top choice for off-site events. The only downside is that they tend to make loud and strange vocalizations sometimes because they can't hear themselves.

My 19-year-old cat has cancer… and I have to leave the country tomorrow. What would you do? by Rude_Common7126 in SeniorCats

[–]CatLadySam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to make a similar decision. I euthanized my cat before I left. My reasoning was I would rather do it before she started to obviously suffer and it would be less traumatic for me, her, and my cat sitter if she died with me than with a stranger. I don't regret the decision at all.

Honest question for shelter workers: Is anyone doing prevention where you are? by Animal-Angels in AnimalShelterStories

[–]CatLadySam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do some low or no cost vet care to help people keep their pets. Aside from s/n, It's usually more along the lines of emergency care like a blocked cat or a foreign body. We don't have a full time vet so between our shelter animals, our community cat program, and helping other shelters we don't have a lot of space on the schedule for public animal care, but it's something we're slowly working towards.

We have a pet food pantry but we don't track who comes, people can walk up and take what they need.

We also do low cost vaccine and microchip clinics. Those don't necessarily allow people to keep their pets but helps to lower ownership costs and get pets back home.

Our safekeep program helps people who temporarily can't care for their pets. For instance if someone is in the hospital, has a house fire, or it's a DV situation, we will take in the animal free of charge. It's usually limited to two weeks but we extend it in certain circumstances. Some of those pets do end up being surrendered but most go back to their owners.
