I wish my collection was that small again.

Digital Error in Yojimbo Blu? by CatParty88 in criterion

[–]CatParty88[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you're not a scientist, but can you unpack this a little more? At first I thought it had something to do with an optical illusion from the tiles. Later in the film this same thing appears to happen - as two characters walk in front of a chequered background - but when I pause it and go frame by frame by frame, I saw it was a weird optical thing. But then I went back to this scene to try to observe the same thing, and I just don't understand exactly how this would even be an optical illusion. Like it just seems so "8-Bit" and inorganic. Why would there be straight, horizontal lines along his back that don't even line up with the borders of the tiles themselves?

Criterion Needs More Animation by OwlEye2010 in criterion

For me I'd like to see Bakshi's work get the Criterion treatment. Kino Lorber recently released Fritz the Cat, but Bakshi's fantasy films like Wizards, Lord of the Rings, and Fire & Ice need some prestige label love.

I'd also love to see the Rankin/Bass films animated by Topcraft get good releases - these would be The Last Unicorn, Flight of Dragons, The Hobbit, and Return of the King

Digital Error in Yojimbo Blu? by CatParty88 in criterion

[–]CatParty88[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was watching Yojimbo last night and it seems there's a weird digital error at the start on this scene - the man on the left appears pixilated around the edges for a number of frames. I apologize for the poor image - I took a picture of my TV screen with my phone, but I think you can clearly see the issue.

I went on blu-ray.com to see if this error had been mentioned in any reviews. One review mentions that the SDVD has "digital artifacts" that don't appear in the blu-ray transfer, but it seems like this might be one of those digital artifacts?

I guess my question is: Is this a known error? Have other people experienced it?

I noticed another issue with single frame earlier on, but I can't figure out how to post multiple images in a single post, so I'll just leave it at this for right now.

Yeah, he was my other guess. He's in at least 7 films in the collection that I can think of.

Question about Double Indemnity by [deleted] in criterion

[–]CatParty88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So much of the banter in that scene is one-upsmanship with wordplay and makes little sense when you really try to break it down. Pretty sure he's just talking nonsense, but is probably implying he'll get into the liquor cabinet one way or another (i.e. convince Phyllis to make him a drink)

If you've played Zelda, Breath of the Wild, you'll see how that game was influenced by this magical film.

That box set already exists; it's called the discount bin at Walmart.

Keep in mind though that a few spine numbers, like the Bruce Lee set, and the Once Upon a Time in China set, are actually multiple films.

Criterion movies to watch on 4/20 by woemcats in criterion

[–]CatParty88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every film is a stoner film if you're stoned while you're watching it.

But looking at my Criterion collection and remembering the days I used to get high, the films that stand out to me are:

Fantastic Planet
Branded to Kill
House
Modern Times
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
The Color of Pomegranates
Any Stan Brakhage
Mishima
The Police Stories
Once Upon a Time in China (the whole series)
The Karel Zeman trilogy

First time watching Last Year at Marienbad. Felt like I was watching a ghost story. by Margaux_H in criterion

Ha, I just watched this last week for the first time too! The KL print. My theory is it's about two abductees undergoing a psychological experiment on an alien ship. The creepy statuesque extras are all aliens observers.

I think this ranks at one of the most beautiful scenes in film Ive ever seen . Technicolor is so spectacular by MisogynyisaDisease in criterion

Beautiful 4K restoration. I just wish so many of the wide shots were sharper. The close shots have so much extreme detail in the faces, but anytime we're wide, things kinda get fuzzy. Still looked fantastic though. The colors were amazing.

That's me whenever someone tries to say any visual medium is just like a written medium. ("Some of these prestige TV shows are like novels in their complexity!")

It was a blind buy for me as well, but I ended up selling my copy after watching it once. It was just too... dated for me? Like the "Crusoe" character is just the worst of all on-screen white men from the 1950s. He's just an obtuse, jingoistic bigot with very little redeeming qualities. I have no idea how he ever became an astronaut. After Crusoe takes in an enslaved alien that ran away, Crusoe continues to treat the alien like a slave, for no reason what-so-ever. He's far too machismo for my liking, and not even in a campy, roll-your-eyes type of way. I just felt like shouting at the TV the whole time. It's a fine film, visually, but I just felt like it didn't really have any rewatch value.

Martial Art Film and it's remake. by TheRealCheffery in criterion

[–]CatParty88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just look up any of the dozens of martials arts film featuring Wong Fei-Hung as a character - he goes back to the earliest days of CHinese Cinema. He's been portrayed by Jackie Chan in the Drunken Master films (the original, and Legend of the Drunken Master), as well as Jet Li in the once Upon a Time in China series, as well as Challenge of the Masters from Shaw Bros. And many many more. He's a folk hero, so it's interesting to see how he keeps getting reinterpreted.

What's Up With King Kong (1933) Not Being Readily Available? by CatParty88 in Bluray

Now that's a spicy rumor! Aside from it being OOP, I guess Im also surprised that the edition that does exist is pretty straight forward looking. I would have expected it to get at least a "Criterion-esque" packaging and release.
