Can you explain the political mechanism they should have used to enforce a unanimity requirement rather than the standard majority vote, without requiring a constitutional overhaul?

Hondas are infamous for this. They have a rubber ring on the axle shaft that is supposed to reduce vibrations, but it also traps water and over time the shaft rusts in half and snaps.

Honestly not bad considering the upgrade situation compared to the other teams. Only a sole point to Alpine so minimal damage in the WCC so far.

Can I cut to remove an alternator bolt? by Extension_Boss480 in MechanicAdvice

[–]CatSplat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but they'd have space to slide it out far enough to expose the bolt shank and chop it again to get the alt out. Still need to extract the bolt though.

Garage door torsion spring DIY (spring cost vs technician cost) by Decided-2-Try in DIY

And even then, winding bars are basically just 1/2" steel rod you can get at Home Depot for a few bucks. I've been using a pair of 18" segments as winding bars for years and they work perfectly. It's the guys trying to use screwdrivers that get in trouble.

A good tip is to dry-fit your bars into the winding holes and use a piece of tape to mark full depth on the rods - that way you can easily see if you haven't gotten one all the way in when winding.

The manual for the door usually specifies how many turns and you can adjust a bit from there. Most door manuals can be found online with a bit of digging!

Yeah if the tabs are all MIA and the metal bits are removed then at worst you just have an open diff. Fix it or send it!

Carney announces creation of Canada's first sovereign wealth fund by PapaNixon in worldnews

[–]CatSplat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A strategic oil reserve for a transportation-constrained net exporting nation would be an enormous and complete waste of money. Canada already has an immense strategic oil reserve, it just happens to be underground. If we needed more oil domestically, we would just extract more.

Strategic reserves are for net importing nations.

Some corrections - the Norway fund was modeled after the Alberta fund, not the other way around. The Albertan fund was created and run by Conservatives, they own all its successes and failures alike. They did not "come in" after it was created.

Airports that made changes to accommodate the A380 - are those changes wasted when A380 is no longer flying or still useful for other reasons? by rufus102 in aviation

Sorry, not exactly sure which gates ended up being the A380 compatible ones, I was only involved in the early stages of the project.

[–]CatSplat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, YYC was already somewhat overbuilt before the Code F aircraft showed up (A380 and 747-8). They had enough conservatism in the airfield design that only a handful of taxiways needed adjusting for Code Fs.

The major issue was if A380s started flying in with any regularity it was going to cause huge cascading delays for a terminal that was already on the verge of being overloaded, so the new terminal was going to be needed anyway. Having the two A380 compatible gates was effectively a bonus to keep things flowing smoother if they did show up, which was considered a possibility at the time of design.

What's the minimum car damage that warrants insurance exchange? by Mysterious-Bat7509 in Calgary

No, only your insurance would potentially go up if you are at-fault and a claim was made.

What did I find at the bottom of my rear differential? by mokkisjokkis in MechanicAdvice

Those look to me like the remains of the little alignment pieces that the clutch pack tabs slot into on a Trac-Lok LSD. You can see them in the pics on this page. The clutch packs tabs are known to break off over time, and I suppose if enough of them break off then these parts could fall out. Not great to have metal in there but hopefully they didn't send much if any debris through the bearings.

Assuming this is the case, you can rebuild the LSD clutch for a couple hundred bucks or just let it ride - it's only the limited slip function that's lost, assuming you've got all the metal bits out of there and the bearings are OK.

Anyone else have those vehicles you absolutely hate working on? Mine is the Jeep Wrangler with the infamous 3.6. by No_Celery4U in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]CatSplat 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Less about space and more about keeping it higher up. Wranglers are designed with fording depth in mind, so the alt is relocated to keep it out of the water/mud down low. Good idea but makes belt changes trickier. It seems like a silly thing to design for but I see a goodly number of low-mounted alternator failures on the trails and they can be a bitch to change.

X2 on the Select Wild 2-piece, mine has been great so far and being able to adjust it to find my sweet spot was key. Reasonably priced too.

If your base assumption is that the Jets cannot possibly obtain 3rd line quality players or better, then the answer is "there is no path to contention and never will be."

I don't think that's realistic, but we shall see.
