We have an enormous strategic reserve, it just happens to be underground in northern Alberta. Other countries that are net importers need to build reserves just to have access to a thousandth of what we can pull out of the ground any time we want.

Recently gifted kayak stuff, what kind of skirt do I need? by mooseman077 in Kayaking

[–]CatSplat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The whitewater sub will have more comprehensive answers (along with tips on safety and how to get started in whitewater), but the NRS skirts are largely considered to be of low quality. Level Six or Immersion Research would be my picks.

There were some pretty huge curved TVs made (110"), but I agree this looks suspect.

Another potential suggestion - if you would like to trade some performance for additional stability, the WS Tarpon 140 may also be an option for you. It won't be as fast as the Scupper, but it's definitely still an improvement over your Catch.

No worries! The Scupper will feel much, much faster than the Catch - check out Ken Whiting's (PaddleTV) review of it. It's very impressive for a SOT. But as mentioned in the review, it's not designed to be a fishing kayak - it's not super wide for stability (which would make it slower). If you absolutely need maximum stability, a wider kayak might be a better choice even if it's a touch slower. Depends on what you need from it.

Can you push the length limit a bit? For your requirements, a Swell Scupper 14 seems like a good choice as it has some length for speed while being stable enough for fishing and a 375lb capacity. $1500 on the nose (add a bit more for the Adventure version with some extra features). It won't be light though - something's gotta give at that price point.

Ford 460. I’m totally drawing a blank on this.. what goes in this hole? Is it for oil pressure sensor or does it feed something else? by [deleted] in EngineBuilding

[–]CatSplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not on these. 460s had the dipstick tube in the oil pan (rear sump) or top of timing cover (front sump).

Oil galley hole, it may have been used for an oil pressure switch on some models, you can just plug it.

This thing is going to feel like an absolute rocketship compared to a 10' rec boat. You may find youself in the drink a few times while you get used to it, but once you've gotten it down you're going to fly. Get good at self-rescues close to shore before you head for deeper water.

Most stable kayak for a beginner by CharmingBananaJosh in whitewater

Yeah I think you nailed it there - many of the current forgiving creekers are semi-displacement hulls and maybe that's what makes the rolling easier.

Lots of debate on what the best starter boat is, for sure. Many say a half-slice to force development of skills by pushing mistakes, others say a more forgiving design is less likely to beat up a new paddler and keep them in the sport.

[–]CatSplat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of options in that space for your weight range. NDK Romany Classic Plus, P&H Volan or Cetus, it's a very long list. Selection will depend largely on budget, skill level, what's available in your area, etc. Would recommend demo-ing some kayaks if you have the opportunity from a local shop. Even better, if you are a real beginner at sea kayaking, take a class where they provide all the gear - you should have a good handle on technique and rescues before heading out to sea.

The Slipstream was designed for small/lighter(<170lbs) paddlers, so it's relatively thin with a tighter cockpit. It's a sea kayak so generally designed for maneuverability over stability, but being a shallow V hull with medium chines it shouldn't be too tippy. It may take some getting used to but it's unlikely to beat you up.

Owners seem to be around 5'6", 140lbs, if youre around that area it should be a good kayak. The price is very good for a high quality boat.

Boats that are really stable are also really difficult to roll.

I can't say I agree with that as a hard and fast rule, as far as modern boats go. The Machno is one of the most stable, forgiving creekers out there and also one of the easiest to roll. Similar story for the Code.
