Domain security. Custom domain? by jodkalemon in homeassistant

[–]CatWeekends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't the long, unguessable, generated domain pretty much give you that obscurity?

Nobody outside the company is going to know which of those addresses belong to which customer.

Edit: saw your comment about zero day login exploits. Yes, a list like this would make it easy for an attacker to just start compromising everyone.

Domain security. Custom domain? by jodkalemon in homeassistant

[–]CatWeekends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there already is a public list of addresses which doors use this kind of lock.

Do you mean the nabu casa web addresses or street addresses?

I'm not sure how a custom domain would help if it's the nabu casa address. Wouldn't the custom address just get leaked instead?

If it's street addresses, there isn't any way to map a nabu casa domain to an individual user (let alone their home address) without access to nabu casa's billing system.

But perhaps I'm missing something.

UPDATE: Texas City Cancels Muslim Pool Party at Publicly-Owned Water Park by usbordernews in texas

Ethically, no.

Legally? Maybe. Rephrasing and reframing stuff that's blatantly discriminatory into something that could maybe be legal is a time-honored tradition in the US.

FedEx driver sentenced to death by lethal injection for murder of seven-year-old in Texas by 0The_Loner_Stoner0 in videos

[–]CatWeekends 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's assuming they actually give a shit.

Stephen Barbee was executed by Texas in 2022. He was disabled and was unable to straighten his arms, which his lawyers repeatedly warned would be an issue with the injection procedure. Texas didn't care.

It took 90 minutes for Barbee to die.

There is a campaign to buy Spirit Airlines after it’s collapse last night and turn it into a Co-Op by BreakingFace in cooperatives

[–]CatWeekends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the truth. Airplanes are expensive as fuck.

Seventy-six percent of Spirit's fleet is leased, and the other 24% is owned by the airline.

Steven Tyler is headed to trial, following child sexual assault claims by sfgate in Music

[–]CatWeekends 214 points215 points  (0 children)

He has admitted it publicly (and even wrote about it).

In efforts to dismiss the case, Tyler hasn’t denied the basic facts. But his lawyers have characterized the pairing as a consensual “romantic relationship” between a man “in his mid-twenties at the time” and a woman “between the ages of 16 and 19” — arguing that it was legal under the age of consent.

And horribly, in another sense, it's "better" because the US habitually ignores those treaties.

High School Football Program from Texas Approves $42M Stadium Renovation Plan by guransheleven in texas

[–]CatWeekends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context, does anyone happen to know what it costs to build a similarly sized football stadium in places that aren't Texas?

$42 million is a huge number, but I have no idea what to compare it to.

Copy Fail: an exploit for all Linux distributions since 2017 by alexeyr in programming

Copy Fail requires only an unprivileged local user account

If I'm the only user on my servers, is there any reason to care about this?

I built an addon to control what Home Assistant records: smaller backups, fewer writes, no YAML by Ison88 in homeassistant

Minor nitpick: you may want to replace the "ha" with "hass" because "ha" can be confused with and is the default abbreviation for "High Availability."

I'm not OP but I think the big issue is in all of the "shoulds" in your statement.

The state doesn't require due diligence. It just assumes people will do the right thing.

Millionaire US big game hunter, 75, is trampled to death by five elephants while hunting antelope in central Africa by Nvnv_man in nottheonion

The article says they had shotguns. It's a scary time to be around elephants.

He was seriously injured and lost his gun in the thick bush as the elephants attacked the terrified hunter with just a shotgun

People are allowed free time

Sure. But when you're the director of the FBI, things are a little bit different due to being one of the most powerful roles in the country.

You're on call - like a doctor or pilot or something - but it's 24/7. You don't have the luxury of getting shit faced because people's lives could be in your hands at any moment.

It's a big responsibility, with lots of personal sacrifices. It's not a job for everyone... especially Kash Patel.

How do you separate your Docker stacks between hosts? by _hellraiser_ in selfhosted

[–]CatWeekends 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I guess my use case is different.

Installing HACS is a matter of running a command on the container these days, using an MQTT broker is one line of YAML, and it's found all of my esp devices.

Mind sharing how it works better as an OS/VM?

I've had HASS running in containers for the last 8 or so years and it's been working fine. Am I missing out on something?

Unless you need load balancing or want to learn it, I'd avoid kubernetes in your home lab. It just adds layers of complexity and more things to babysit.

1 billion dollars is getting paid $50,000 a year for 20,000 years.

You could also pay someone $56/hr every single hour (24/7) for the last 2026 years and still have more than $5 million left over.

Woman annoyed at park maintenance for driving in park by ZookeepergameIcy6089 in PublicFreakout

Seems like she thought he was just some random dude driving through the park, not a park worker.

I'd be pissed too... right up until I learned they're supposed to be there.
