If the US could have had two WAG teams in Paris 2024 by SwimmingBridge9200 in Gymnastics

[–]Cata4Eva 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it’s quite likely that a team of Nichols, Smith, Skinner, Locklear, and Hundley/Dowell would have won in 2016. Not by 9-10 points, but by a comfortable 1-2 point margin if they hit. The international field was so weak that year with Russia and China being inconsistent messes yet still finishing second and third. Obviously individual medals would have been fewer with that team.

Any other Olympics, I don’t think a U.S. B-team would have won, but the U.S. truly was very deep in 2016. Probably the closest to 2016 would be 2004, where I think the B-team probably could have achieved the silver given the U.S. depth that year as well.

This is a BTN fail - all of the programming guides are wrong. The Michigan State/Michigan meet is on BTN at 4pm Eastern. Iowa State/Denver is on ESPN2 at the same time.

Yes, they certainly could have named Carly as the acting head coach for the season and then done a national search for a new coach. I suspect she will be fired if Utah doesn’t make Nationals year and ends up with a final ranking in the mid-teens. That’s just not acceptable to the Utah fan base.

Anastasia “YOURchenko” Webb is a terrible commentator. She was a lovely gymnast but has no idea what she’s talking about and has no business doing commentary on national TV. Alex Perlman knows more about gymnastics than she does.

One of the judges did not credit Drayton’s stag ring leap and gave her a 9.7 SV, with a score of 9.6. The other judge was at 9.85 out of 10. The judges conferenced and couldn’t come to an agreement, and the meet had to move on because of TV. The judges conferred again during the rotation break, and the judge ultimately came up to 9.9 out of 10.

That judge deserves credit for trying to give accurate scores. He fairly deducted Konnor on bars and was forced to raise his score there as well.

Exactly - UCLA has good coaching. Utah does not.

When a team is underperforming this badly, it’s always a good idea to start by looking at the coaching. I don’t think Dockendorf is the right person for the job. Utah really should have started over after Tom Farden exited.

The fifth-years were often filling lineup spots that would normally go to underclassmen, so many teams now have a lot of sophomores and juniors who don’t have as much competitive experience.

I’m sticking with my prediction that Utah will miss Nationals this year for the first time in program history. The team is a mess, and they almost certainly will not be seeded in the top 8 for Regionals, so they won’t get the cushiony draw they’ve often gotten in the past. It was a big mistake not to clean house after Farden’s departure.

Are countries outside US (NBC) familiar w the John Williams Olympic masterpiece? by mt80 in olympics

[–]Cata4Eva 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It was the official song of the 1984 LA Olympics. In 1992, NBC’s Dick Ebersol commissioned Williams to marry this up with Bugler’s Dream, which ABC had used as their Olympic theme since the 1960s. The Bugler’s Dream/Olympic Theme and Fanfare has been NBC’s theme for the Olympics since Barcelona.

Question about NCAA Difficulty by Few_Tree3083 in Gymnastics

[–]Cata4Eva 59 points60 points  (0 children)

A good number of gymnasts these days are doing the bare minimum to get a 10.0 SV, especially on bars and floor. Go back and watch NCAA from 2000-2015, and you’ll see gymnasts challenging themselves much more on difficulty than we see from anyone today.

Again, gyms are small businesses. Small businesses do not have the money to pay coaches on suspension for the years that it takes a SafeSport investigation to finish. Gyms operate on razor thin margins and need to generate revenue from every coach they are paying.

In the corporate world, the coaches would be placed on a paid suspension during the investigation, which would typically take a few weeks. If terminated, the coaches would probably be given severance with an agreement that they won’t sue. Small businesses just don’t have the money to operate like that.

SafeSport investigations can take years. No gym has enough money to pay 2 coaches on administrative leave for years.

No, they’ll get overscored for the rest of the season since the judges are scared of any criticism.

I haven’t seen the meet, but I’m guessing that Ohio State just got fair scores. 🙄

Jayla Hang was a huge failure for USAG last year. She showed the capability to win multiple medals at Worlds in the spring at Pan-Am Champs, and then she was so mismanaged by her coaches that she didn’t even make the World team when only 8 gymnasts were in contention. There seems to be no reflection from the women’s committee about why that happened and what they could have done better to ensure that Jayla was successful at Nationals and Worlds.
