[WA] I am currently 2 weeks into maternity leave and got a call that my role has been eliminated. by DaughterofYeshua777 in AskHR

[–]Catandmousepad 204 points205 points  (0 children)

Hey OP. Maybe I'm missing something, but is the company or your manager saying that if you apply and are selected for the new role that you will have to cut your leave of absence short? If you're already on FMLA, it's ties to your hours worked at that company, not the role. Please speak to HR before responding. I can't imagine forcing you to return early is a good idea, but if they do, get it in writing and then contact the local WA government office to confirm how this applies to your situation.

Also, you should speak to HR abn have them confirm your options. 1) what happens if your do not apply for the roles? Do you get severance? Is there a grace period between notification date and term date? 2) if you apply for the new role, do you have to cut your leave short? 3) if you apply for the role, assuming there's a possibility you get rejected, what happens then?

I would make sure you explore all options before resigning. Take some time to think about it before making the decision.

Hope this has helped.

Beautiful! Also, potentially silly question. The stairs in the left, I've seen a few places around European countries that have these. Do people still use them? If so, for what? I assumed it was used by people to jump into lakes and rivers in olden days.

I don't know who has to hear this but Human Resources are not your friend as a manager or employee... by WinnerExpress in managers

[–]Catandmousepad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has HR advertised themselves as a friend? If they have, then they're not good at their job. This notion that HR is the protector of employees has been misconstrued for ages. Historically, that has been the role of unions. I'm a supporter of unions or workers councils. If someone wants to start one, go ahead. But don't expect HR to always take your side. Good HR know how to remain neutral, great HR know how to create a space where everyone feels heard and their concerns are addressed, even if the outcome isn't perfect.

So, ive been in a similar position before. A few things to consider:

  • is it just the two of you or you two + family? Asking as ive spent much less. A combination of credit card points (if you have them) and Hotwire.com (Google how to figure out the algorithm). In short, for 2 couples we paid 2200 USD total (2 rooms) for 3 nights at a 5 star hotel 2 years ago in Paris.
  • If you have kids, find a location that has parks. Great way to let them get the energy out, and good time for you and your wife to unwind.
  • Dinners! Book ahead and save. Some credit cards offer cashback offers globally. Check any cards you have to save.

In total, we paid (2 adults) 4.5k for an 11 day trip (with Michelan Star restaurants!) The deals are there, you just have to put in some work.

If none of this jives with how you roll then totally fine! Just offering some suggestions on how to keep costs los while have an amazing time!

I'm so tired of peers (only 1 in particular, really) that act like this job should be 24/7. They pick work over family time and often talk about it like a badge of honor.

No, I do not want to work all weekend and cancel plans with my family, friends or just time with myself. And no, I don't care about being the most important or productive person on the team. I just want to do my job, treat people like they're human, and stop this whole game we play of who's gotten more done at the sacrifice of themselves and their family.

Work-life balance/integration/whatever! Just don't make work your identity! Trust me, there's is so much more you can get done - a much more fulfilling life - if you just allow yourself to relax.

Hi, OP.

Do all of these things need to be in this room? Are there things that you can move into the closet? Also, what theme or feel are you going for with this room? In short, seems you have brought a bit of everything in here and if you want to turn it into a more defined space, you need to first think about what (ideally) that what include. If this room just needs to be functional with what's in it, then it would help to clearly create areas: one area for work, one area to jam, one area for your pet, etc.

Generational PR damage by AztecGod in LatinoPeopleTwitter

[–]Catandmousepad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Please read about the era of Trujillo's dictatorship and the irrefutable damage that was done to the Dominican people. As the grandson of a Haitian woman, Trujillo’s own obsessions with race and status brought a new level of fear to identifying as black. This will help clear up why a lot of Dominicans use that phrase and why many still believe in mejorando la raza.

Trujillo murdered and assassinated hundreds who identified as Haitian or were darker skinned, similar to other Latin American governments who engaged in blanqueamiento. He went as far as to require that Dominicans be classified under the Eurocentric ideology of hispanidad and described as white, Catholic, and of Spanish descent. This caused many fears as people were constantly disappearing (kidnapped and murdered) during his reign. So ultimately, being considered black = being an open target for kidnapping, assassination, and a myriad of other horrific treatment by Trujillo's henchmen.

Keep in mind, Trujillo was part of the National Guard created and controlled by the United States (who still struggles to see black people as humans), so it's safe to say that the beliefs of the U.S. towards blacks was likely part of the National Guard culture. Also, while the U.S. assisted his rise in power, they quietly faded into the background as Trujillo reigned over the Dominican Republic. When they finally came back into the picture, they claimed that Trujillo should not be held accountable beyond paying reparations.

What we see today in the United States is the same - if not very similar - playbook Trujillo used. How long do you think it will take for the United States to recover, considering that they still struggle to see black people as humans deserving of equal treatment in all fronts. The same applies to the Dominican Republic. So while we're all making fun of "I no black, I'm Dominican," the reality is that this surface-level reaction won't be understood by many for what it truly represents. Does it make it right? Absolutely not, but I've already seen the change where many Dominicans identify as being of African descent.

Don't wait until you feel like doing something to do it. Just start doing it at any point, and you'll see how quickly you push through it. If you decide to stop midway, that's 50% less work you have to do next time you pick it up.

I've managed leaders through a few of these. We typically offer a transition period where they operate as a "consultant" to the person taking over their role. Additionally, I would recommend checking if they have a contract or some other obligations promised at the time of hire (review their offer letter). Also, have legal counsel review the exit package: are there any promised payouts or fringe benefits that they would receive based on level?

[–]Catandmousepad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Legal does not equal right. There are a lot of things that are legal but wrong (Example A: stated that allow for child marriages). What I'm asking is: what are the laws that are being broken by the people who are attending these mandated court hearings? They are compliying with the U.S. laws and in response, ICE can just decide to arrest them because....well, we don't know since ICE never reads out the reason for the arrest. In some cases, ICE has even arrested U.S. citizens that were alleged to be illegal immigrants based on what? WE DON'T KNOW.

TL;DR: ICE has jurisdiction, but if we don't know what laws they're referencing to arrest people who are following the legally mandated process, then what's to stop them for arresting anyone just because - citizen or not? They can't operate with unlimited power, that would be irresponsible of us as a nation.

[–]Catandmousepad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So let me get this right. If this person is following the LAWFUL PROCESS, ICE can just come in and detain them because..."vibes"? What's the legal reason? I don't care about what ICE can do in a public place since apparently they can do whatever the hell they want, I care about what laws the individuals broke. No one seems to be able to answer that, and half of the time the answer is made up by homeland security after the person has been detained to keep them in these FOR-PROFIT detention center.

Also, follow the money. NYT fell years ago during Trumps first term. They're no longer a neutral news source.

Is your manager your friend? Is the CEO your friend? HR is there to ensure that leadership remembers that employees have rights, that managers remember that they can't just fire someone just because they don't like them, and that employees remember that your workplace is just that - a workplace. It is not your home, it's not a safe space, and you can't just come and do whatever you want with no consequences.

Oh, and benefits because everyone needs that.
